A squirrel this acrobatic deserves a Photoshop battle to match.

Redditor mgxtenergy posted a photo Wednesday of a surprisingly chill squirrel balancing between two flowers and eating a snack. The photo was taken by nature photographer Geert Weggen, who focuses primarily on wild red squirrels. (Check out his photo books here.)

Xiaomi Mi Note 2 to offer version with curved-edge screen, Force Touch and 6GB of RAM?

Expected to be unveiled before the end of the year, on Thursday the Xiaomi Mi Note 2 was the subject of some ‘leaks’ on China’s Weibo micro-blogging site. Some interesting speculation pertaining to the phablet was outed. For example, the high-end version of the Mi Note 2 is rumored to be equipped with Force Touch. This is the technology that Apple calls 3D Touch and can differentiate between a hard tap, a regular tap, and a light tap on the display. Each tap would result in a different response from the handset.

Google Play Services update adds Mobile Vision, Text and Awareness APIs

The latest Google Play Services update to v9.2 has reintroduced the Mobile Vision API which was announced last year in v7.8 but subsequently removed. The API allows apps to detect (but not recognize) human faces in images and video footage. Play Services 9.2 also adds a new Text API for character recognition and delivers the Awareness API as well.

See also: The best of Google I/O 20169

Besides face and smile detection, the Mobile Vision API also supports barcode recognition that allows it to scan barcodes in any orientation as well as scan multiple barcodes at once. The Text API can be used to recognize Latin characters in multiple languages via the camera and convert them to plain text. This comes in handy when translating text, scanning documents or adding business cards via a card reader app.

The Google Awareness API outlined at Google I/O 2016 is also contained in the latest Play Services update. The Awareness API allows developers to program contextual awareness into their apps. According to Google, this can all be done with only minimal demands placed on system resources.

The Awareness API works on the basis of two other APIs: Fence and Snapshot. Fence notes when your context changes, so an app could know when you get up and leave the house to go outside, for example. Snapshot lets an app know what you’re doing at a specific time: sitting down texting, jogging and listening to music with headphones in the rain, or walking and taking photo videos at the beach.

Now that the API is fully available, it’ll be interesting to see what devs come up with… and whether or not they’ll start abusing it. Fortunately we will be able to turn off access to the Awareness API “contexts” – things like time, location, weather, activity, etc – via Android Marshmallow’s granular app permissions if things get out of control.

Have you got the update yet? What would you use the Awareness API for?

.NET Core 1.0 released, now officially supported by Red Hat

Version 1.0 of .NET Core, the open source, cross-platform .NET runtime platform that was first announced in 2014, has been released today. .NET Core is arriving alongside ASP.NET Core 1.0, the open source, cross-platform version of Microsoft’s Web development stack.

Microsoft picked an unusual venue to announce the release: the Red Hat Summit. One of the purposes of .NET Core was to make Linux and OS X into first-class supported platforms, with .NET developers able to reach Windows, OS X, Linux, and (with Xamarin) iOS and Android, too. At the summit today, Red Hat announced that this release would be actively supported by the company on Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

After many years of non-cooperation between Microsoft and the largest of the open source commercial Linux companies, Microsoft and Red Hat announced a new partnership in November 2015. This union heralded official support for Red Hat virtual machines in Azure and closer cooperation on .NET. Full support for .NET Core 1.0 marks the next step in that partnership.

A ZFS developer’s analysis of the good and bad in Apple’s new APFS file system

Two hours or so of WWDC keynoting and Tim Cook didn’t mention a new file system once? (credit: Andrew Cunningham)

This article was originally published on Adam Leventhal’s blog in multiple parts.

Apple announced a new file system that will make its way into all of its OS variants (macOS, tvOS, iOS, watchOS) in the coming years. Media coverage to this point has been mostly breathless elongations of Apple’s developer documentation. With a dearth of detail I decided to attend the presentation and Q&A with the APFS team at WWDC. Dominic Giampaolo and Eric Tamura, two members of the APFS team, gave an overview to a packed room; along with other members of the team, they patiently answered questions later in the day. With those data points and some first-hand usage I wanted to provide an overview and analysis both as a user of Apple-ecosystem products and as a long-time operating system and file system developer.

The overview is divided into several sections. I’d encourage you to jump around to topics of interest or skip right to the conclusion (or to the tweet summary). Highest praise goes to encryption; ire to data integrity.

Our readers gave the Xperia X a middling reception, but when asked if they will buy an X Performance, two out of three people voted “No.” And the immediate culprit is price – $700 or €700 (or more) is just expensive, regardless of specs.

And the specs themselves drew plenty of fire. People in the comments constantly brought up the Xperia Z5, including the smaller Z5 Compact and the bonkers Z5 Premium (the one with a 5.5″ 4K screen)….

My journey from small-town hick to Mac user

(credit: Kris Connor/ Getty Images)

I grew up in a low-tech household. My dad only replaced something if it caught fire. We owned about 15 cars (mostly Humber 80s), and 13 of them were used to keep the other two running. Same story for tractors and any other farm equipment you care to name. Dad’s basic rule was that if he couldn’t repair it, we didn’t need it. We weren’t anti-technology, but technology had to serve a purpose. It had to work reliably or at least be fun to repair.

Then I decided I wanted a computer. Much saving ensued, and after a while I was the proud owner of a secondhand Commodore VIC-20, with an expanded memory system, advanced BASIC, and a wonky tape drive… and no TV to plug it into. After begging an old black-and-white television from family friends, I was set for my computing adventures. But they didn’t turn out as planned.

Yes, I loved the games, and I tried programming. I even enjoyed attempting to make games involving weird lumpy things colliding with other weird lumpy things. But I never really understood how to program. I could do simple things, but I didn’t have the dedication or background to go further. There was no one around to guide me into programming, and, even worse, I couldn’t imagine doing anything useful with my VIC-20. After a couple of years, the VIC-20 got packed away and forgotten.

Rumors had said that the company might skip the number 6 and jump straight to 7, to stay on par with its Galaxy series and not confuse people. After all, most of Samsung’s marketing for the Galaxy S7/S7 Edge this year was around the shape of the number 7.

Johnny Manziel's lawyer accidentally texted details of his case to the AP

We’ve all done it: the tweet that was supposed to be a DM, the infamous reply-all or the text reply to the wrong person.

It’s just that most of us don’t do it while defending a spiraling former NFL quarterback against charges of domestic violence. And for that matter, it’s not usually one of the world’s largest and most widely-read news organization on the other end.

Why the new Mercedes-AMG GT R is the David Hasselhoff of sports cars

The nickname of the Nissan GT-R is “Godzilla.” Now that Mercedes has its own GT R, this begs the question: What — or who — is the German equivalent of Godzilla? I reckon it’s David Hasselhoff. Accordingly, I say we nickname this Teutonic GT R the “Hoff.”

With iOS 10, you will no longer slide-to-unlock your iPhone

One of the tenets of the iPhone and iPad user experience is going away with iOS 10: the trademarked ‘slide-to-unlock’ action that will remain in history as one of the most memorable features of the original iPhone and many iOS devices that followed, is now being replaced by a very different ‘Press Home to unlock’.
And this will infuriate quite a few users. Here is why: while earlier (before iOS 10), you could simply tap on the Home key to unlock the phone without the need to press / click the button, you now need to first tap to unlock the phone and then press / click the Home … – Source

Some real talk about the future of rockets

Blue Origin’s propulsion module lands in West Texas on Sunday morning. (credit: Blue Origin)

In a first, the secretive Blue Origin rocket company invited the world to watch its Sunday launch, live. Blue Origin’s New Shepard vehicle accelerated to 2,142mph, ascended into space, and returned to Earth 10 minutes later. Not that all that much of the world watched. It was Father’s Day, after all, and Blue Origin doesn’t have quite the cachet of SpaceX to draw in the masses. Moreover it’s easy enough to dismiss the achievements of Blue Origin—it’s just a small rocket, after all, and this only an unmanned suborbital flight.

Nevertheless, Sunday’s launch affirmed a singular, increasingly inescapable fact about the future of spaceflight: reusable rockets represent the future of the aerospace industry. SpaceX has proven that it can safely return large orbital rockets to Earth, both on land and at sea. With Sunday’s flight, Blue Origin has now definitively taken the next step, turning a rocket around and flying it again. Four times.

This fact won’t be easy to accept for Big Aerospace, which has built its business model around expendable launch vehicles and large government contracts. Moreover, this article is not intended to denigrate NASA, which continues to do some amazing, absolutely groundbreaking things. But our space agency does not appear to be the outfit that is going to radically rewrite the rules of launch, colonize space, and spread human settlements onto the Moon, perhaps asteroids, and eventually Mars.
