Samsung Display to be exclusive supplier of AMOLED panels for one of Apple's 2017 iPhones

Apple is in the habit of splitting its orders to multiple suppliers for the same component, but 2017 might be an exception. The latest reports suggest Apple will launch three new iPhones next year with different display sizes: 4.7-inch, 5.5-inch and 5.8-inch.

Samsung Display, one of world largest display suppliers for the smartphone market, will certainly offer some of its products to Apple. In fact, sources from Taiwanese supply chain makers claim Samsung Display will be the exclusive supplier of AMOLED panels for the 2017 iPhone 5.8-inch model.

The AirPods charging case is prone to battery drainage issues

The AirPods might be great, but as any first-generation product, they are also flawed. In about two and a half weeks since their launch, some users have started complaining of battery drain issues tied with the AirPods’ charging case. Although Apple claims that the battery in the case holds 24 hours worth of charge, users have been noticing drains of up to 40 percent – despite the AirPods being fully charged and Bluetooth activity at a minimum.

Apple is already handing out replacements to affected customers. One described getting a new set of AirPods which didn’t lose charge over night. … – Source

Charlie Sheen just made Debbie Reynolds' death about Trump

Charlie Sheen has jumped in on the online reaction to Hollywood star Debbie Reynold’s death, who died only a day after her daughter Carrie Fisher.

Except instead of posting a touching memory or heartfelt thought, the TV and film actor voiced his thoughts on Twitter about President-elect Donald Trump.

They were unkind, to say the least.

Dear God;

Trump next, please!
Trump next, please!
Trump next, please!
Trump next, please!
Trump next, please!
Trump next, please!

Bowie and Prince to be remembered with huge, streamable NYE fireworks

The city of Sydney, Australia is saying goodbye to a terrible 2016 with one final bang.

Organisers of the city’s much-loved, multi-million dollar New Year’s Eve fireworks will be using the occasion to pay tribute to lost legends from the past year, including musicians Prince, David Bowie and Gene Wilder.

It’s a change in tone from the display’s previous themes, which primarily had uplifting (and admittedly very cheesy) titles such as “Embrace,” “Make Your Mark,” or “Awaken the Spirit.”

The fireworks are set off around the harbour, with the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the focal point. It’s tradition for the bridge to carry a neon symbol, which is revealed at the end of the display. In previous years it’s been an eye, a pair of lips, and a light bulb. …

How humans survived in the barren Atacama Desert 13,000 years ago

Enlarge / The Atacama Desert today is barren, its sands encrusted with salt. And yet there were thriving human settlements there 12,000 years ago. (credit: Vallerio Pilar)

When humans first arrived in the Americas, roughly 18,000 to 20,000 years ago, they traveled by boat along the continents’ shorelines. Many settled in coastal regions or along rivers that took them inland from the sea. Some made it all the way down to Chile quite quickly; there’s evidence for a human settlement there from more than 14,000 years ago at a site called Monte Verde. Another settlement called Quebrada Maní, dating back almost 13,000 years, was recently discovered north of Monte Verde in one of the most arid deserts in the world: the Atacama, whose salt-encrusted sands repel even the hardiest of plants. It seemed an impossible place for early humans to settle, but now we understand how they did it.

At a presentation during the American Geophysical Union meeting this month, UC Berkeley environmental science researcher Marco Pfeiffer explained how he and his team investigated the Atacama desert’s deep environmental history. Beneath the desert’s salt crust, they found a buried layer of plant and animal remains between 9,000 and 17,000 years old. There were freshwater plants and mosses, as well as snails and plants that prefer brackish water. Quickly it became obvious this land had not always been desert—what Pfeiffer and his colleagues saw suggested wetlands fed by fresh water.

[Android 7.1 Tip] Get rid of the Play Store on your home screen and use the 'My Apps' shortcut instead

Odds are you have the Play Store on your home screen for easy accessibility, but have you ever considered not having it? I don’t mean you should dig into the app drawer every time you need to open the store, but perhaps the regular Play Store link isn’t the most efficient. If you’re on Android 7.1, maybe you ought to replace it with the My Apps shortcut.

App Shortcuts (formerly known as Launcher Shortcuts) were added in 7.1 Nougat to allow developers to link to specific locations in their apps.

A closer look at how amateur rocketeers plan to launch a human into space

Jonas Linell, Copenhagen Suborbitals

The amateur rocket enthusiasts at Copenhagen Suborbitals have been plugging along now for eight years, and after a series of some launch attempts and some failures, the crowdfunded group says it is making progress toward more ambitious goals—including the launch of a human on a suborbital flight.

Founded in 2008, Copenhagen Suborbitals has attempted more than a half-dozen launches of various sized rockets, including the Heat-1X in 2011, believed to be the most powerful amateur rocket ever launched. Most recently, in July, Copenhagen Suborbitals launched its Nexø 1 rocket, a 5.6-meter-long booster weighing 205kg. Powered by liquid oxygen and ethanol, the Nexø only reached an altitude of 1.5km instead of its planned flight to 8km.
