Matthew McConaughey's 'SNL' monologue was 'okay okay okay'

There’s very little Matthew McConaughey needs to do to be entertaining and charming, so for his Saturday Night Live monologue he did just that: very little

Instead of a skit, McConaughey opened the show by telling the story of how he landed a role in Dazed and Confused and the origin of his now-iconic catchphrase “alright, alright, alright.”

Unfortunately, the story is relatively well known at this point, so we would’ve rather seen him parody his True Detective character. …

We used to believe our brains couldn’t be changed. Now we believe they can – if we want it enough. But is that true? Will Storr wades through the facts and fiction for Mosaic science.

Dido, always scoring some dark things… (credit: Flickr user: Dennis Brekke)

For years she had tried to be the perfect wife and mother but now, divorced, with two sons, having gone through another break-up and in despair about her future, she felt as if she’d failed at it all, and she was tired of it. On June 6, 2007 Debbie Hampton, of Greensboro, North Carolina, took an overdose of more than 90 pills—a combination of ten different prescription drugs, some of which she’d stolen from a neighbour’s bedside cabinet. That afternoon, she’d written a note on her computer: “I’ve screwed up this life so bad that there is no place here for me and nothing I can contribute.” Then, in tears, she went upstairs, sat on her bed, swallowed her pills with some cheap Shiraz and put on a Dido CD to listen to as she died. As she lay down, she felt triumphant.

But then she woke up again. She’d been found, rushed to hospital, and saved. “I was mad,” she says. “I’d messed it up. And, on top of that, I’d brain-damaged myself.” After Debbie emerged from her one-week coma, her doctors gave her their diagnosis: encephalopathy. “That’s just a general term which means the brain’s not operating right,” she says. She couldn’t swallow or control her bladder, and her hands constantly shook. Much of the time, she couldn’t understand what she was seeing. She could barely even speak. “All I could do was make sounds,” she says. “It was like my mouth was full of marbles. It was shocking, because what I heard from my mouth didn’t match what I heard in my head.” After a stay in a rehabilitation centre, she began recovering slowly. But, a year in, she plateaued. “My speech was very slow and slurred. My memory and thinking was unreliable. I didn’t have the energy to live a normal life. A good day for me was emptying the dishwasher.”

Weekly poll: Apple iPad Pro - Hot or Not

You can now get your hands on an iPad Pro, we did. Apple’s XL-sized tablet marks a new chapter in Cupertino’s tablet efforts, one where the iPad goes from a content consumption gadget to a content creation one.

The first-party keyboard and stylus are key for that. There have been third-party solutions almost for as long as there has been an iPad, but they never had iOS-level support nor Apple’s design touch. Editing 4K videos is also a key selling point – the tablet can stream three 4K videos simultaneously and edit one.

Whatever your work orientation, the huge 12.9″ 2,048 x 2,732px screen makes even flagship laptops jealous and is much more conductive to working rather than just browsing. It’s 78% bigger than an iPad Air screen and due to its 4:3 aspect ratio looks much bigger than even the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2.

The Apple Pencil, that’s the stylus, is tracked 240 times per second so you can draw with no lag and its pressure sensitive too. Galaxy Note users aren’t that impressed though, S Pens have done that for years and without battery too.

The keyboard seems like it threatens the MacBook Air, but Apple says it will never make a converged laptop (with Apple “never” is just another word for “not yet”). The Microsoft Surface has several generations of keyboard cases and the new Surface Book feels even more like a laptop – you can adjust the angle of the screen, which you can’t with Apple’s tablet.

We’ll understand if you’re tempted to get an iPad Pro just for gaming. The latest Apple A9X chipset is a beast and it’s paired with 4GB of RAM (the most any iOS device has ever seen). The quad speaker setup is pretty sweet too, but packing up the Pro for a weekend getaway is not easy – the tablet is about as portable as a MacBook Air.

So, that’s it then – a novel tablet in Apple’s lineup, even if it’s not very innovative considering the rest of the market. It will attract professionals, maybe some hardcore Apple users and people who pay premium for oversized gaming laptops.

Does it attract you? Cast your vote and together we’ll find out the general attitude towards the Apple iPad…

Both the Vivo X6 and the Vivo X6 Plus are expected to be unveiled on November 30th. The Vivo X6 was already certified by Chinese regulatory agency TENAA last week. Now, the Vivo X6 Plus L and the Vivo X6 Plus D have both been certified by TENAA. Unfortunately, the agency did not release any specs or photographs of these two variants of the X6 Plus.

The Vivo X6 Plus is expected to come with a 5.7-inch screen, carrying a 1440 x 2560 resolution. Ironically, that would be smaller than the 6-inch screen expected on the Vivo X6. We could see the MediaTek MT6797 SoC under the hood. This is a Helio … – Source

They have since released a statement paying tribute to the victims and putting all future shows on hold.

PasswordBox Will Shut Down In 2016, Customers Offered A Discount On Intel's True Key

When big companies buy small companies, there’s always a chance that the smaller company will more or less disappear, along with its products. Some good examples in the mobile space would be HP’s acquisition of Palm or Microsoft’s similar purchase of Nokia. Not all tech companies do this – Amazon and Facebook seem to be pretty hands-off with their acquisitions – but Intel certainly does. Less than a year after Intel acquired the company that makes popular password manager PasswordBox, the company announced via its blog that the product will be abandoned sometime in 2016.
