Study: Pokemon GO increases physical activity, but not for very long

Unlike most mobile games, Pokemon GO gets you off the couch and out the door. In addition to being fun, the game can also increase your physical activity. People from all over the world have been bragging about how much more active they are thanks to Pokemon GO. If you have a Pokemon GO playing friend, you no doubt would have already heard all about the fitness benefits of playing the game.

That may be true, but only to a point. Well, at least according to the interesting study that was recently published by The British Medical Journal. Researchers from Harvard University have conducted an online survey among 1,182 US citizens aged 18 to 35 years. The purpose of the study was to figure out if players really are more active thanks to Pokemon GO.

Out of the 1,182 participants in the survey, 560 were avid Pokemon GO players, while the rest (622) had not downloaded or played the game. The researchers tracked and compared the activity — steps taken daily — of both groups four weeks before downloading the game, with the number of steps taken during the first six weeks of playing.

The data shows that before downloading the game, both groups took roughly the same number of steps on a daily basis. But as soon as participants started playing the game, things changed. In the first week, the playing group took 955 extra steps per day on average, which translates into 11 minutes of additional walking. Meanwhile, the non-playing group’s activity level did not change.

Apparently, Pokemon GO really does increase people’s physical activity. But unfortunately, the game wasn’t able to keep its players motivated for long. According to the study, the number of steps among the playing group returned back to pre-download levels within six weeks. The reason for this is that some stopped playing Pokemon GO, while others simply decreased their playing time and therefore took fewer steps.

So, there you have it. The study shows that Pokemon GO does indeed have an effect on players’ physical activity, but only for a short period of time. But this is only to be expected, as people tend to get bored easily and quickly move on to the next best thing. Pokemon GO was never going to maintain the fever pitch of its initial popularity for long.

It must also be noted that this study was part of the BMJ‘s year end research, which typically aims more for entertainment value than hard science, so your mileage may vary. If you’ve moved on from Pokemon GO and are looking for a new game to play, including those that don’t ask you to leave the couch, then be sure to check out our list of the best Android games of 2016.

Are you a lot more active than usual when playing Pokemon GO? Or do you simply do less walking outside the game?

Pebble's smartwatches will continue to work through 2017

Pebble’s software and services will continue to work at least until the end of 2017.

Following its acquisition by Fitbit, Pebble has detailed upcoming changes to its software and cloud-based services. The company is stating that its smartwatches will continue to work at least until the end of 2017, with the Pebble SDK, APIs, mobile apps, and the Pebble appstore set to remain in service.

From the Pebble blog:

Fitbit is going out of its way to keep Pebble software and services running through 2017. To be clear, no one on this freshly-formed team seeks to brick Pebble watches in active service. The Pebble SDK, CloudPebble, Timeline APIs, firmware availability, mobile apps, developer portal, and Pebble appstore are all elements of the Pebble ecosystem that will remain in service at this time. Pebble developers are welcome to keep creating and updating apps. Pebble users are free to keep enjoying their watches.

Our first action to preserve the Pebble experience far into the future will be to update our mobile apps, loosening their dependency on a patchwork of cloud services (authentication, analytics, app locker, etc.). Expect this update in the coming months. The mobile app updates will ensure the operation of core Pebble functions, even with cloud services discontinued—they won’t break functionality.

The upcoming update won’t hamper the functionality of Pebble Health, which feeds “directly into the Pebble mobile app, Apple HealthKit, and Google Fit.” Pebble is also evaluating features that rely on third-party services — dictation, messaging, weather, and others — and will make a final decision soon over how long it can keep those features running.

For now, it looks like you’ll be able to use your Pebble devices for at least another year, although what happens after that is uncertain.

Morgan Stanley: T-Mobile could merge with Sprint or buy out U.S. Cellular in 2017

Morgan Stanley analyst Simon Flannery says that the 2017 outlook for the telecom sector resolves around the letter “T.” Flannery says that the telecom industry’s direction next year depends on taxes, Treasuries (meaning the direction and magnitude of changes in interest rates) and T-Mobile. The nation’s third largest carrier has a number of balls in the air according to the analyst, and what the carrier decides to do with them could result in a bullish or bearish telecom sector next year.

The best scenario for T-Mobile and the industry would be a merger with Sprint, Flannery says. He also … – Source

What color Daydream View headset should I buy?

Which color is the best for Daydream?

It may seem a little odd to be picky about the color of your VR headset, but the truth is you’re wearing this thing on your face for extended periods of time so you might as well choose the one that works best for you. Google’s Daydream comes in Slate Grey, Crimson Red, and Snow White. Perhaps more important than the names of the sweatpants-like fabric that covers the headset is the accent materials found where you rest your face.

Pick something that looks nice, but be aware of what this headset is going to look like after a few dozen uses.

The inner fabric

Each Daydream View headset has inner padding to cushion your face so there’s less discomfort over time. It works well, but also means this fabric is up against your skin while you binge watch something on Netflix and excitedly slash away at monsters. That means either you or someone you share the headset with is likely to sweat.

The Snow variant of Daydream includes a much lighter inner fabric than the dark grey that comes with Slate or the black that comes with Crimson. That means it’s more likely to show things like sweat stains easily, which can quickly make the headset visually unappealing.

The good news is this inner fabric is held in place with velcro, which means it can be removed and washed with relative ease. Either way, you’re going to want to make sure you chose your color wisely.

The outer material

The texture for each of these colors is exactly the same, and the color of your Daydream controller is exactly the same, so no matter which color you choose the feel and gameplay are going to be the same. That having been said, there’s a few style notes to consider:

The plastic parts that hold the phone look nicest on the Snow and Slate versions, as they mostly blend in with the fabric.

Slate will be the most commonly found publicly, as it was the first available.

Crimson is going to stand out the most, which could be important if you frequently misplace things.

Which is your choice?

Is the color of your VR headset important to you? Are you more likely to ask someone to try their VR headset if you see the Crimson or Snow versions in public? Do you wish there was a different color available for you to buy? Let us know what you think!

Wynn Las Vegas to put an Amazon Echo in every hotel room

A tough of artificial intelligence is coming to your luxury room.

The Wynn and Encore hotels in Las Vegas, known as some of the most luxurious in the city, are getting a technology upgrade this month when they install an Amazon Echo in every single hotel room across the two properties. That’s a total of 4748 Echos, which will enable voice control of various actions in the hotel room.

Guests will be able to talk to their Echo to control their lighting, room temperature, audio and TV. Wynn Resorts says that future developments will bring additional functions to rooms, including basic “personal assistant” style features. Obviously to start off things will be more limited, so this won’t be a full Echo experience to match what you can get today at home with a truly personalized Echo tied to your Amazon account.

The rollout will begin in both Wynn and Encore hotels starting this month for suites and eventually hitting every single room by summer 2017.
