Someone just dropped the mic on the burkini ban in the most British way possible

LONDON — France’s controversial burkini ban has dominated the headlines since authorities in several towns on France’s Mediterranean coast imposed a ban on the burkini — a swimsuit that covers the torso, limbs and head.

While worldwide condemnation abounds, one British man has just turned the burkini debate on its head in the most British way possible.

In a (very polite) letter to the editor, Henry Stewart of London told The Guardian that suits should be banned instead of burkinis, burqas and hijabs, because he deems men in suits more dangerous. …

Our full written review of the Honor 8 is on its way, so if you are excited about the Honor 8, you should watch our video review in the meantime.

TLDR: I really enjoyed using this little phone. Battery life is quite good and the 5.2 inch screen size stands out among the many smartphones out there with 5.5-inch displays.

There are only a couple of shortcomings that don’t entirely justify the $400 (or Euro) retail price. Still, The Honor 8 is a wonderful device to use, it’s snappy and its Kirin 950 silicon runs much cooler than the Snapdragon 820.

Google to undercut Uber in San Francisco with new ride-sharing service

On Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal said a “person familiar with the matter” confirmed that Google would be moving into the ride-sharing market currently dominated by Uber and, to a lesser extent, Lyft. The source said that since May, Google has been testing a feature that lets Google employees and employees of other nearby firms in the Bay Area organize carpools through Waze, a mapping and traffic app purchased by Google in 2013.

The report noted that this new service would be different from Uber and Lyft in that it would only try to connect people who are already going in the same direction, offering rates low enough to discourage drivers from operating like taxis. The service will only be available in San Francisco at the beginning.

According to the WSJ, Waze’s drivers in the closed pilot test only make 54 cents a mile, although Google doesn’t take a cut as Uber and Lyft do.

Sony Xperia X Compact bench results show 4.6" 1080p display

Something smells fishy, though, the OS is listed as CyanogenMod. While it’s CM-friendly, Sony has its own AOSP efforts, so there’s no good reason for the phone to be running a mod. Also, a rooted CyangenMod will let you change how software (like GFX) sees the hardware, so take these specs with a grain of salt.

Enhanced DMV facial recognition technology helps NY nab 100 ID thieves

Enlarge (credit: New York State Department of Motor Vehicles)

In January, the New York State DMV enhanced its facial recognition technology by doubling the number of measurement points on a driver’s photograph, a move the state’s governor says has led to the arrest of 100 suspected identity thieves and opened 900 unsolved cases. In all, since New York implemented facial recognition technology in 2010, more than 14,000 people have been hampered trying to get multiple licenses.

The newly upgraded system increases the measurement points of a driver’s license picture from 64 to 128. The DMV said this vastly improves its chances of matching new photographs with one already in a database of 16 million photos. As many as 8,000 new pictures are added each day.

“Facial recognition plays a critical role in keeping our communities safer by cracking down on individuals who break the law,” Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said in a statement. “New York is leading the nation with this technology, and the results from our use of this enhanced technology are proof positive that its use is vital in making our roads safer and holding fraudsters accountable.”

Couple heats things up with wedding photoshoot on active volcano

Step up your game, couples: you’ll have a hard time pulling off a wedding shoot hotter than this one.

Photographer Jenna Lee enlisted newlyweds Lauren and Alex earlier this month to pull off one of her wildest goals: a wedding shoot on Kilauea, one of Hawaii’s active volcanoes.

Lee was first inspired to do the shoot after lava from Kilauea started flowing into the ocean, a phenomenon that hasn’t occurred in years. “When I heard the lava was flowing again… I knew I wanted to create something special,” Lee told Mashable.

If you are still rocking a Galaxy S5 Active and are going to do so for a while at least, you have a reason to rejoice. AT&T has finally released the Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 update for the phone.

The list of updates include everything included in Android Marshmallow, along with Wi-Fi calling, video calling, and Android security updates.

US unveils charges against KickassTorrents, names two more defendants

US prosecutors have now named a total of three men said to be operators of the defunct file-sharing site KickassTorrents (KAT). The new allegations are in a formal indictment filed Tuesday, which contains the most detailed charges against the site yet.

Last month, alleged site operator 30-year-old Artem Vaulin of Ukraine was arrested in Poland. The new indictment (PDF) also names Ievgen (Eugene) Kutsenko aka “chill” and Oleksander (Alex) Radostin aka “pioneer,” also of Ukraine. Bench warrants have been issued for the arrest of all three men, although authorities have confirmed the arrest of only Vaulin. The indictment was reported earlier today by TorrentFreak.

Prosecutors say the three men developed and maintained the site together and used it to “generate millions of dollars from the unlawful distribution of copyright-protected media, including movies… television shows, music, video games, computer software, and electronic books.” They gave out “Reputation” and “User Achievement” awards to users who uploaded the most popular files, including a special award for users who had uploaded more than 1,000 torrents.

PSA: Get two-factor authentication on your PlayStation Network account

Sony has added support for two-factor authentication to its PlayStation Network accounts, and you really should set it up now, rather than after someone tries to take over your account or steal your password.

To set up the new security feature, turn on your PS4 and go to Settings -> PlayStation Network Account Management -> Account Information -> Security -> 2-Step Verification. You can also set it up through the Web by visiting this page. From there, on-screen instructions will walk you through the process of using a text message to confirm your mobile device as a secondary layer of security for your PSN account. Two-factor support is not available when logging on to older PlayStation systems, so Sony recommends you generate a “device setup password” to help protect the PS3, Vita, or PSP.

The addition of two-factor support comes five years after PSN was hit by multiple, high-profile hacks, which compromised many accounts and led to a $17.75 million settlement with the victims. Two-factor authentication was far from standard back then (though some game companies had it), but even today there are plenty of reports of PSN accounts being compromised, and getting charges reversed and access fixed with Sony is not always simple.

HTC One A9 15-day update pledge ditched before the first update

Back in July, HTC confirmed that Android Nougat will be coming to its HTC 10, One M9, and One A9 smartphones. Now that Nougat is here, the company has given us a rough idea about when these updates will be arriving. Unfortunately, the company is going to miss its self-imposed 15-day deadline for updating its One A9.

Originally, HTC launched the One A9 with the promise that it would receive key Android upgrades within 15 days of every Nexus update. Well the factory images and OTA updates for Nexus devices started rolling out on August 23rd, which would give HTC until September 6th or sooner to begin pushing out its own updates for the One A9. Sadly, the company inadvertently confessed that this isn’t going to happen while tweeting its update plans.

We’re excited to receive final shipping Android 7.0 Nougat software from Google! pic.twitter.com/BNbQBpgddK

— HTC (@htc) 24 August 2016

HTC states that the unlocked One A9 will be receiving its Nougat update after the unlocked HTC 10 and the older One M9. Given that the HTC 10 won’t be receiving its update until Q4, which begins in October, the One A9 is guaranteed to miss its 15 day deadline, which would be by September 6th. Faster Android updates was a major selling point for the One A9, so this is going to disappoint a fair number of HTC customers.

Missing update targets is nothing new for HTC though, the company encountered set backs while pushing out Marshmallow and Lollipop updates to some devices. Although to HTC’s credit, the company has been better than most at communicating its upgrade schedule and updating its extended product portfolio.

See also: The official list of Android 7.0 Nougat features299

There’s likely to be some technical reason why HTC is going to miss its target, but the company really shouldn’t be making promises that it can’t keep. On the plus side, the HTC 10 should receive its upgrade to Android Nougat before the year is out.
