Tokyo Sky Tree: An enriching experience

Tokyo Sky TreeIt's difficult not to be wowed when you are in Japan, especially if you get an opportunity to witness the Tokyo's biggest work in progress - the Tokyo Sky Tree. A marvel of Japanese technology and engineering, the Tokyo Sky Tree was envisaged by a consortium of six of Japan's biggest broadcasting stations. They wanted a new terrestrial broadcasting tower, but since construction began in 2008, the Sky Tree has come to mean a lot more to the citizens of Tokyo. It is, when fully constructed, going to be the highest radio tower in the world. You stand in front of the iron and steel structure and you feel humbled. It stands in front of you, a 350 meter tall behemoth, with hundreds of men and machines working on it night and day. My guide tells me that when it is completed in December 2011, the Tokyo Sky Tree will be the tallest structure of its kind in the world - scaling an incredible 634 meters! The building has a triangular shape at the base and as you go higher, it becomes round. An engineer working on the project tells me that this was necessary to avoid the fierce gale that blows in Tokyo. Even as we, an excited group of foreigners from DigiCon 2010, were being escorted to the tower, it started raining heavily. At the apex of the structure will sit the antenna, which will be used for digital, terrestrial broadcasting throughout Tokyo. Believe it or not, the whole idea of reaching this height with the structure was necessitated because the Tokyo Tower, the existing terrestrial tower, at 332.5 metres, proved too short to broadcast signals throughout the city! After Sky Tree was commissioned, in a plot of land between the Sumida River and Imperial Palace, the common Japanese were called upon to suggest a name for the proposed mega-structure. My guide tells me that a final list of six names was put to vote from almost eleven thousand entries. The moniker, Tokyo Sky Tree, was polled the favourite. If you stand atop the already constructed first observatory, at 350 metres, you can look down at the fireworks in the night sky. When completed, in spring 2012, a shopping area and office building will be added at the base of the tower, making it the nerve centre of business and cultural interaction in this part of Tokyo. One can get to the first observatory using an elevator, but beyond that one will have only one way up - through the glass-walled walkway. No doubt, you will have a great view of Tokyo from there. My guide insists that I visit Tokyo again in the spring of 2012, when the Tokyo Sky Tree will be thrown open to the public, along with a brand new café at the first observatory at 350 metre. "Come back..." he says. Now every time I think of Japanese Manga; in the backdrop will be the Tokyo Sky Tree.

Digicon6 Special: Keynote by South Korean filmmaker Kwak Jae-yong

Kwak Jae-yongIf you thought that Sanjay Leela Bhansali was the only one who gave a lot of attention to the film's music, think again. The acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Kwak Jae-yong discusses the use of music in his films at DigiCon6 Asia Contents Forum in Japan. Excerpts from the keynote... I have never made any films with a particular market in mind. As a child, I loved reading Japanese novels and comics and have been influenced by them. The most important thing about writing a screenplay is that one has to be true to the story. I love conveying my character's emotions through the music pieces to my audience. Also while choosing the kind of music; I try to share the common feelings with audience. I think that is why my films are accepted. People start learning how to talk through emotions. Love, hate, pain all is communicated through the use of emotions rather than words. I loved listening to overseas music; I have been influenced a lot by pop music and Western content. When I try to communicate, I use emotions. I get actors to listen to the music, thus we try to share emotions. In My Sassy Girl (2001), I controlled the speed of music. When actors nurture real feelings because of the mood created, I consider my job done. I use music as a tool to express our feelings. If you see my movies you would understand that I try to use actors who are like general people. When I was a child, I loved Japanese Manga and animation and consumed a variety of Japanese content. Across South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore, there is a lot if diffusion of content. In My Sassy Girl, people's reaction to the music was similar across countries. In that sense, I think that the people are the same. People are after all, people, when it comes to emotions.

Shabana Azmi goes ga-ga over Hrithik's performance in Guzaarish

Shabana AzmiEver since they played mother and son in Fiza, Jaya Bachchan treats Hrithik Roshan like her own son. But now she has competition. Shabana Azmi, who saw Guzaarish, has adopted Hrithik. The multiple National award-winning actress says she has not seen a performance like Hrithik's in Guzaarish in a very long while. "If I had a son I'd like him to be Hrithik. His eyes speak volumes. His body language and his whole demeanor is breathtaking. Main to fidaa ho gayi. Actor ho to aisa." Hrithik is overwhelmed by Shabana's response. Says the superstar, "Of all the compliments I've received for Guzaarish so far, Shabanaji's is the best. Actually, I haven't had time to allow any of the compliments to sink in." So who says an actor cannot compliment another even if they are competing for the same roles and within the same box-office parameters can't be friends? After the screening, Abhishek was seen profusely complimenting Hrithik, thereby putting an end to all the talk about the two not seeing eye-to-eye since Hrithik's pairing with Aishwarya is so much in-demand. "You should make an action film. There's so much pent-up violence within you," Abhishek was heard telling Sanjay Bhansali after the screening. The Big B who has worked with SLB said the film was magical. "The way Sanjay creates on celluloid is just so awesome. Everything and everyone perfect." When asked to comment on his bahu Aishwarya's performance, the Big B said she was "restrained and dignified". Just like the Big B's comment.

Abhishek flies down for a night for special screening of Guzaarish

Abhishek BachchanLove for Abhishek and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has a sparkling connotation even after five years of togetherness. On Thursday night, for a special screening of his wife's film Guzaarish, Abhishek flew into Mumbai out of Goa where he's shooting with a whole bunch of co-stars for Abbas-Mustan's Players and flew back to Goa the next morning, and that too when there was just one day of shooting left in Goa. Says a source, "Aishwarya told him the premiere for Guzaarish was cancelled, so he had no plans of returning to Mumbai until Saturday morning when the schedule in Goa ended. But when he heard that there was a very special screening of Guzaarish on Thursday evening for hand-picked guests, Abhishek decided there was no way he would not stand by his wife's side at this important gathering. Abhishek first informed all his co-stars Bipasha Basu, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Sonam Kapoor, he then took Abbas-Mustan into confidence. The directors were worried since there was just one day's shoot. But when they understood how important it was for Abhishek to be by his wife's side, they let him go. He flew out into Mumbai on Thursday evening, flew back on Friday morning to complete the schedule."

Sanjay Leela Bhansali stranded on Jaipur airport

Sanjay Leela BhansaliA holy visit on Tuesday to Jaipur turned out to be a rather comic nightmare for Sanjay Leela Bhansali (SLB). On Wednesday when he was waiting to board his flight back to Mumbai, calamity struck. Freak rains created a situation so unique in travel history that SLB found himself in the midst of making history over and above his cinema. Says the director, a nervous flier by nature, "Though it was raining heavily the Mumbai-Jaipur flight landed on time and we got ready to board the flight. But after the landing no passenger came out of the aircraft! The minutes ticked into hours. Still no sign of anyone emerging from the aircraft. We were told nothing. We just sat waiting for movement from the aircraft wondering if it was being held hostage." Several hours after the scheduled departure time, and with SLB getting progressively nervous about losing precious time, it came to light that the passengers who had landed in Jaipur from Mumbai refused to deboard because it was raining and there was bus to carry them to the terminal. The incoming passengers finally de-boarded two hours after arrival. But then began the second-half of the drama. The passengers waiting to board refused to do so. Recalling the harrowing incident SLB says, "The passengers then started saying they won't board in protest for the delay. One passenger even took out a video camera to record this freak delay for posterity. I was hiding in a corner. If I got captured on camera and the news channels got a hand on it, I'd become more famous then I wanted to be." The ground crew finally convinced the outgoing passengers from Jaipur to Mumbai to board while a very tense and nervous filmmaker tried to forget that he had a release coming up in less than 36 hours.
