Pixel phone marketing paying off for Verizon, 'demand is exceeding supply'

Verizon is advertising its Google Pixel phone model on par with heavy hitters like the iPhone 7 or Galaxy S7, and the campaign is really paying off, it seems. According to research firm Wave7: “It is clear that demand is exceeding supply… Most Pixel XL SKUs are shipping in March and most Pixel SKUs are out of stock as well.” The Wave7 crew did a survey in 50 carrier stores last week, and found out that Google’s Pixel phones rang up 9.5 percent of Verizon’s smartphone sales last month.

Leonie the shark don't need a man, begins impregnating herself instead

Parthenogenesis — a natural form of asexual reproduction — is something that’s common amongst plant species, insects, amphibians and many other life forms.

Meaning “virgin creation” in Greek, it describes the development and growth of an embryo without fertilisation.

The phenomenon occurs in sharks too, but one shark has shown a remarkable ability to switch between reproduction styles.

Reuters: Note7 fires were caused by defective batteries, not a design flaw or firmware issue

The saga of the Galaxy Note7 was one of the most surprising and disastrous events in the tech industry last year. The Note7 received very positive initial reviews, but soon after, several reports of the device catching fire were made public. After acknowledging that the problem was with the Note7, Samsung began recalling all units.

To make matters worse, Samsung started production of a new ‘safe’ model shortly afterwards, only for those devices to start catching fire as well.

Do you use mobile payments? [Poll of the Week]

Last week’s poll summary: Out of over 1,800 total votes, 32.3% of our readers said their favorite announcement from CES 2017 was the new ASUS ZenFone AR. 13.3% said they were most excited for Samsung’s Chromebook Plus & Pro, while 11.7% said their favorite announcement was the Faraday Future FF91.

Mobile payments have been around for a pretty long time now, but they didn’t start catching on until the release of Apple Pay and Android Pay a few years ago.

While Google, of course, wants all Android users to use Android Pay, Samsung wants its users to use Samsung Pay, and the same goes for Apple with Apple Pay. And if for some reason you aren’t fully satisfied with those three options, we have access to plenty more mobile payment services to round out the already crowded landscape. Chase Bank and even Walmart have their own proprietary services, for example.

Android Pay: what is it, how does it work and who supports it?

Samsung Pay: what is it, how does it work and how do I use it?

Whichever service you decide to use, though, mobile payments are designed to make your life easier and save you time.

So tell us – do you use mobile payments, or are you still not convinced they save time and effort? Be sure to cast your vote in the poll attached below, and speak up in the comments if you have anything else to add. We look forward to hearing what you have to say!

Samsung heir could be put behind bars in South Korean bribery scandal

The heir to Samsung’s empire is embroiled in a bribery scandal.

South Korea’s prosecutor is seeking a warrant to arrest Samsung Group’s Jay Y. Lee over bribery and embezzlement allegations. The 48-year-old executive is poised to take over control of Samsung’s business empire from his father, Lee Kun-hee. Jay Y. Lee is accused of bribing Choi Soon-sil, an aide to South Korean president Park Geun-hye, in order to secure political backing for the $8 billion merger of Samsung C&T Corp and Cheil Industries Inc.

The exec is said to have paid up to $36.4 million (43 billion won) in bribes, with the prosecutor stating that the profits were split between Choi and president Park. As news of the political involvement broke last year, the South Korean parliament moved to impeach the president. The country’s special prosecutor is now going after Samsung’s heir, and with the company accounting for 17% of Korea’s economy, the move will have far-reaching consequences:

The special prosecutors’ office, in making this decision to seek an arrest warrant, determined that while the country’s economic conditions are important, upholding justice takes precedence.

In a statement to Reuters, Samsung denied any wrongdoing:

It is difficult to understand the special prosecutors’ decision. It is especially hard to accept the special prosecutor’s assertion that there was improper request for a favor related to the merger or succession of control.

Lee is expected to appear for a hearing at the Seoul central district court on Wednesday, which is when the court will decide whether to approve the warrant for his arrest.

How a robot got Super Mario 64 and Portal “running” on an SNES

If you missed it live, watch TASBot’s AGDQ 2017 run then read about it below.

Can you really, playably emulate games like Super Mario 64 and Portal on a stock standard SNES only by hacking in through the controller ports? The answer is still no, but for a brief moment at this week’s Awesome Games Done Quick (AGDQ) speedrunning marathon, it certainly looked like the impossible finally became possible.

For years now, AGDQ has featured a block where TASBot (the Tool-Assisted Speedrun Robot) performs literally superhuman feats on classic consoles simply by sending data through the controller ports thousands of times per second. This year’s block (viewable above) started off simply enough, with some show-offy perfect play of Galaga and Gradius on the new NES Classic hardware (a system that TASbot organizer Allan Cecil says is “absolutely horrible” when it comes to automation).

After that, TASBot moved on to a few “total control runs,” exploiting known glitches in Super Mario Bros. 3 and Mega Man to insert arbitrary code on the NES. This is nothing new for the computer-driven TASBot—the basics of the tricks vary by game, but they generally involve using buffer overflows to get into memory, then bootstrapping a loader that starts reading and executing a stream of controller inputs as raw assembly level opcodes. The method was taken to ridiculous extremes last year, when TASbot managed to “beat” Super Mario Bros. 3 in less than a second with a very specific total control glitch.

5 Android apps you shouldn’t miss this week! – Android Apps Weekly

Welcome to the 174th edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the headlines from the last week:

Adobe is reportedly working on an app that will let you edit images with your voice. They released a YouTube video that demonstrates the tech at work. In the video, the man crops the image, flips it around, and then shares it on Facebook. It’s not currently available for anybody, but the demo is definitely promising. It could be months or years before we see something like this hit the market, though. We’ll just have to be patient for right now.

Google Voice is apparently re-imagining itself again sometime soon. Those who still use the service have likely seen a notification on their dashboard that a new version of Google Voice is coming to consumers. We don’t know what the features are yet, but they are definitely coming. Some have even had Google Voice call them and leave a cryptic message about speed dial. It’s been a while since Voice got an upgrade so here’s hoping it’s awesome.

Facebook made headlines this week when it was reported that the social media network may start using mid-video ads. This means that you’ll see an ad in the middle of your video instead of at the beginning or the end. The feature is currently in testing so Facebook can see how users react to it. We imagine that it’ll make its way to Facebook proper if the blow back isn’t too bad.

Fitbit has been busying buying up smartwatch companies. Apparently, they are also working on an app store. According to CEO James Park, they want this task completed as soon as humanly possible. They didn’t say why, but the popular conjecture is that the company is working on its own smartwatch. That’s where all the signs are pointing. We don’t know much yet, but we’ll keep an eye out and let you know when something happens.

The Google Hangouts API will be shutting down in April. The announcement came late last week and had some people legitimately worried about the service. Basically what’s happening is that a bunch of apps that use the Hangouts API will be denied access. We’re talking about the apps in Google Hangouts video chat that puts a mustache on your face or makes fun sound effects. The good news is that the app itself isn’t going anywhere.

YouTube wants its creators to be able to make more money from live streams.

The video giant on Thursday unveiled a new feature called “Super Chat,” which allows fans to pay to highlight their messages within the live chat stream.

The more a YouTube viewer pays, the longer their message will stay pinned. The message is also highlighted in a different color. The feature replaces YouTube’s old tool called Fan Funding, a “tip jar” that gave viewers the opportunity to pay creators.

The Weeknd's video for 'Party Monster' is a frantic, psychedelic trip

Fast cars, bright lights, crosses, women and panthers—is it even a video by The Weeknd if it doesn’t have these elements at least once?

The Toronto crooner may have an effective formula on his hands, but in the vid for “Party Monster,” The Weeknd and director BRTHR manage to take things to another party level. It’s a psychedelic trip with vibrant colors and frantic shots—and with the latest information about his love life, some lyrics (ahem, that Selena line) take on a whole new meaning.

Notification grouping and direct replies to become mandatory in all Android OEM skins

Google’s updated Compatibility Definition guidelines state that OEMs won’t be able to mess with Android’s notification system from now on. This means that, no matter what Android phone you buy in the future — as long as it’s running a new version of the OS, of course — it will handle notifications the same way all other Android devices will.

Specifically, this means that notifications will be grouped together in the notification shade and users will have the option to reply directly to messages from their respective notifications, as it is the case in the latest … – Source

As for rest of the changes, those are mainly UI improvements related to Voice and Camera search. “Easier access and faster switching between Voice, Music, 360 (augmented reality), Camera and Barcode search.”

Monkeys mourning the 'death' of a robot monkey will hit you right in the feels

Spy In The Wild is a new nature documentary shot almost entirely with hidden cameras disguised as robotic animals. Cool, huh?

But in an advance clip released by the BBC, that central gimmick backfires in the most heartbreaking way, when one of the primate robots is accidentally dropped and “killed” by a curious langur monkey.

The out of action cyborg is then mourned by its real-life friends, who gather round and hug each other while gazing upon the lifeless body of their “dead” baby langur monkey. It’s brutal.

It’s also as bizarre as it is sad — a weird mix of The Lion King and Blade Runner that’s as affecting as it is downright odd and ethically quite problematic. …

Tom Wheeler accuses AT&T and Verizon of violating net neutrality

Enlarge / AT&T Sponsored Data charges companies for the right to offer Internet content without counting against mobile data caps. (credit: AT&T)

With just over a week left as chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Tom Wheeler today accused AT&T and Verizon Wireless of violating net neutrality rules with paid data cap exemptions. But with the FCC about to switch to Republican control after next week’s inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump, AT&T and Verizon can likely keep doing what they’re doing without any chance of punishment.

Wheeler described his views in a letter to US senators who had expressed concern about the data cap exemptions, or “zero-rating.” FCC Wireless Telecommunications Bureau staff today also issued a report concluding that AT&T and Verizon zero-rating programs are unfair to competitors. Both Wheeler’s letter and the staff report can be read in full here.

The main issue is that AT&T and Verizon allow their own video services (DirecTV and Go90, respectively) to stream on their mobile networks without counting against customers’ data caps, while charging other video providers for the same data cap exemptions. The FCC also examined T-Mobile USA’s zero-rating program but found that it poses no competitive harms because T-Mobile offers data cap exemptions to third parties free of charge. T-Mobile also “provides little streaming video programming of its own,” giving it less incentive to disadvantage video companies that need to use the T-Mobile network, the FCC said.

Apple once envisioned the iPhone with an iPod click wheel and it was horrible

The iPhone we know and love today could have been very different, and maybe even a total flop, if Steve Jobs had picked a different interface for it.

Samsung reportedly prepping folding smartphone/tablet hybrid for Q3 launch

Samsung will announce a folding smartphone in Q3 2017, according to a report from The Korea Herald. Sources familiar with the matter told the Korean news site that Samsung is preparing 100,000 units of the device, which would also fold out to be used as a 7-inch tablet.

Samsung has been working on foldable smartphone displays for a number of years, with another foldable display patent coming to light as recently as last week. Unlike many previous Samsung foldable phone concepts, however, this device’s display would appear on the outside (as seen in the Lenovo unit above) rather than the inside of the body.

See also:Samsung is still working on that foldable smartphoneNovember 9, 2016

This news is also in keeping with a Bloomberg report from last June, in which unnamed sources suggested that Samsung was preparing two folding devices for 2017. One device would fold inwards while the other, Bloomberg says, “will have a 5-inch screen when used as a handset, that unfurls into a display that’s as large as eight inches, similar to a tablet.”

It seems likely at this point that Samsung is developing an outward folding device, though the question of when it will launch hangs in the air. Some analysts suggest that they won’t be market-ready until 2018, while others suggest we’ll see them this year.

The Korea Herald states: “Despite technical completion, Samsung Electronics has not made a final decision about whether they will unveil the device this year because of marketability and profitability issues, multiple sources said.”

Samsung may be keen to be the first major manufacturer to release such a product and beat its Korean rival LG, who is also working on such technology, but doing so would be a significant financial risk for the manufacturer. Perhaps, like its original Galaxy Note Edge, the device will appear alongside another variant in a limited quantity to measure desirability first.

Smart people everywhere celebrate Stephen Hawking's 75th birthday

Back in 1963, when Stephen Hawking was 21 years old, doctors gave him two to five years to live after he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

On Sunday, the world’s most famous theoretical physicist turned 75 years old.

The man has accomplished a lot in his life: groundbreaking research on black holes, a bestselling book, and continued support for ALS research and awareness.

It’s no surprise that organizations like NASA decided to pay tribute to the great scientist.

That HTC Vive smartphone video? Take it with a grain of salt.

HTC’s smartphone business is in dire need of a reboot, but the company’s other big venture – virtual reality – is actually growing steadily. It wouldn’t be surprising therefore that HTC would want to use the Vive brand to boost its smartphone lineup.

According to media leaked by Evan Blass, that’s exactly what we should expect from HTC in 2017. Provided that the video below is real and accurate, and not just a design concept or experiment, HTC appears to be preparing a Vive smartphone.

The phone’s design is a fresh take on the antenna lines trope we’ve been seeing so much from HTC, Apple, and other companies over the past years. It’s not clear if the lines on the sides are functional or just cosmetic, but the styling is a welcome departure from HTC’s design language from current devices.

The Vive smartphone makes an appearance in a promotional video that purports to give us a sneak peak of an initiative called “CMF Kitchen.”

In product design, CMF stands for Color Material Finish. So a CMF kitchen would be a place where designers play with various colors and textures for products – and that’s exactly what the video is depicting.

The clip decries the lack of originality in modern phone design and gives us a “sneak peek” of three ways HTC us innovating in this field: “chemicals,” “super fibers” and “litmus.” It looks like the company is experimenting with funky colors and novel finishes, moving away from the silvers, blacks, and golds that are so prevalent today.

The video is high production value and it definitely looks like something that HTC would produce to tease its products. The problem is this video wasn’t obtained by Evan Blass from some inside source at HTC. The video has actually been publicly available online for over six months.

A Google search for “HTC CMF Kitchen” reveals that the video was first published in June 2016 on Vimeo by videographer Shaun Saperstein. According to his Linkedin profile, Saperstein has been employed as a visual/motion designer at HTC until June 2016. Saperstein is the author of another concept video that Evan Blass tweeted out today:

This second clip has been published four days ago on Saperstein’s YouTube channel. It shows the same “side control” interface that we’ve seen in a different concept video for a device called HTC Ocean, from Danelle Vermeulen, another graphic designer with HTC. That video leaked out in September 2016.

We’ve reached out to Saperstein to inquire about the videos and we’ll update if we hear back.

In the meantime, take the HTC Vive smartphone, the CMF kitchen, and Ocean with a big grain of salt. It’s hard to believe that HTC would allow its designers to openly share internal materials, especially ones that reveal flagship phones. It’s not impossible, it’s just more likely that the videos we’ve seen are side projects made for the designer’s personal portfolio. That’s how Shaun Saperstein – Source
