Following Google and Samsung, LG launches its own security bulletin

Following the footsteps of Google and Samsung, LG has launched a security bulletin of its own, where the South Korean company will publish updates about security issues in its products and services.

Currently the page contains information related to the May security update, with a link to Google’s own bulletin. The issues are categorized according to severity: Critical, High, Moderate, and Low. There’s even a section that lists issues specific to LG devices, although there’s nothing in it this month.

Stevie — a blind rescue cat — just so happens to be an expert hiker.

On April 26, Stevie — along with her human, Patrick Corr, and his twin brother, Eoghan — decided to make a difference by climbing Ireland’s highest mountain to raise money for local animal shelters.

According to Corr’s recent blog post for Bored Panda, he adopted Stevie from a local shelter in Cork, Ireland about four years ago. Ever since, the two have wanted to “give back to the people who make it their life’s work to helping animals in need.”

Corr, along with his brother and Stevie the cat decided to go on a sponsored hike up Carrauntoohil — a 3,406-foot mountain in County Kerry, Ireland — to raise money for local animal shelters in their area. …

What Pinterest learned in two years working on its search engine

About two years ago, Pinterest launched a different flavor of search engine called Guided Search. Instead of relying on deep data on the user, it would create a network of related topics that users can dive deep into. The idea being that a search like “iPhone” would net additional categories, like “design,” “hardware,” and such. Now Guided Search is about… Read More

8 interesting facts about LG

Though it is having a little trouble competing with companies like Samsung and Apple in the smartphone space, LG is still one of the best-known smartphone manufacturers in the world. According to Statista, LG is the 3rd most popular smartphone maker in the USA with a 9.7% subscriber base (as of February, 2016).

What is behind all this success? LG, like any other company, sure has a story behind its current products and endeavors. In this article we aim to highlight some of the most interesting facts to share about LG. Let’s get started!

LG has been around for quite some time. The company was founded in 1958 with the name “GoldStar”. It was created after the Korean War, and its main purpose was to push the country forward with domestically-made electronics. They were the first company to make Korean radios, TVs, refrigerators, washing machines and air conditioners.

How the name came to be

GoldStar had another entity named “Lak-Hui Chemical”. This part of the company was then merged with GoldStar in 1995, making the conjoint company Lucky-GoldStar, which was then shortened to LG.

Slogans

While LG is currently mostly known for its “Life’s Good” slogan, that is not the only catchphrase stuck to their name. They have also used “Future’s Technology” from 1997 to 1999, in addition to “Digitally Yours” from 1999 to 2004.

The first capacitive touchscreen on a phone

Remember the days when touchscreens were resistive? This means they responded to pressure, making them highly inaccurate and non-responsive. The first smartphone to make things better and feature a capacitive touchscreen was the LG Prada, otherwise known as the LG KE850.

This phone had a 3-inch 240×400 display, 8 GB of internal storage, 2G data speeds, a 3-hours talk time battery life and ran Flash UI. Over 1 million units were sold in the first 18 months.

TVs galore

You can’t talk about good TVs without at least mentioning LG. They do an amazing job, and the numbers surely prove their success. According to Statista, LG was the second most popular TV manufacturer as of 2015, with a 12.4% market share. They were only beaten by their fellow Koreans at Samsung, with a market share of 20.98%.

Environmental friendliness

Electronics companies usually aren’t too friendly with nature, but they should at least try. All things considered, LG is pretty high up on Greenpeace’s ‘Guide to Greener Electronics‘. They currently hold the 12th spot with a 3.5/10 score. You can read all the information straight from Greenpeace’s report.

One of the first to use curved screens

Samsung was the first to release a phone with a curved screen (Samsung Galaxy Round), but some would argue that their attempt doesn’t really count, as the Round’s curvature doesn’t serve much of a purpose.

On the other hand, the LG G Flex was released only about a month later. Though its flexible, curved screen was there mostly – Source

Lenovo held its first Moto phone event since completing its acquisition with Motorola. The Moto Z was announced just yesterday with no pricing information and availability coming in September.

Both the Moto Z Droid and Moto Z Force Droid on their respective US product pages show an offer for “Free storage with Google Photos”. Note that both these models will be launching as Verizon exclusives while the “Moto Z” (without the ‘Droid’ branding) is not listed on Motorola’s US website yet.
