Jupiter, Venus and Mars create a cosmic triangle in morning sky this week

Bundle up and get outside early about an hour before dawn this week to see a potentially incredible grouping of bright planets in the eastern sky.

Jupiter and Venus will be close in the morning sky with Mars not far behind Monday, and the three planets will appear to move nearer to on another as the week goes on. The three bright worlds will form a very close triangle in the sky on Wednesday morning.

Newly discovered 1950s film shows Idaho Fish and Game’s parachuting beavers

Back in January, Boise State Public Radio broke news on an excellent bit of local nature lore: “More than 60 years ago, Idaho Fish and Game dropped beavers out of a plane and parachuted them into the state’s backcountry.”

It’s more complicated than it sounds. As post-WWII expansion saw residents moving into less populated areas of the state, Idaho started having an increased issue with beavers interacting with city life. It fell on the Fish and Game Department to come up with a relocation solution. And while they identified a largely natural area perfect to re-home the creatures, the spot (the Chamberlain Basin, now known as the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area) was hard to access due to a lack of roads. Sadly, packing the beavers and transporting them using horses or mules was deemed impossible—a report filed at the time said the animals become “become spooky and quarrelsome” when loaded with the “struggling, odorous” live beavers.

Luckily, Elmo Heter of the Department had an idea. There was a parachute surplus after the war, so why not tap into that as an effective and affordable means of beaver relocation? “The estimated cost for dropping four beavers from a plane was around $30 in 1948, that’s about $294 in today’s dollars,” Boise State Public Radio reports. Eventually the Fish and Game Department designed a special drop box to ensure safe travel for the animals, and 76 total beavers eventually took the trip (with only one casualty).

Brilliant parody posters give Ukraine elections a 'Game of Thrones' twist

Ukraine is awash in election fever ahead of this Sunday’s local polls, which will include an important mayoral race in the capital, Kiev

The election — only the second since the Moscow-leaning president was overthrown during the country’s revolution in February 2014 — is an important one. Many view the polls as a referendum on the Western-leaning President Petro Poroshenko and his government, which rose to power from the ashes of the uprising.

T-Mobile enables free calling and texting to and from Mexico as Hurricane Patricia makes landfall

One of the more powerful hurricanes ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere turned out to lose much of its strength as it hit the west coast of Mexico on Saturday.

Thankfully, Puerto Vallarta and other coastal areas were spared of significant damage, and once the system approached the mountains further inland, the greatest fears were largely left unrealized.

That said, there are plenty of more isolated areas that may have been cut off by the storm, and while authorities are assessing the situation, T-Mobile announced that from now until November 7th, across all brands (T-Mobile, MetroPCS, … – Source

Clinton, Sanders, O'Malley take the stage for Democrats' big night in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa — For Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley, Saturday night was all about making their case to the Iowa activists who could make or break their presidential campaigns.

For the rest of the country, it was a political spectacle of epic proportions.

The Iowa Democratic Party’s annual “Jefferson-Jackson Dinner” is seen as a kickoff for of the state’s Feb. 1 caucuses. And with just 100 days to go until the first contest in the presidential nominating process, it could well be a race-shaping event.

Just how critical the candidates view this dinner was evident by the organization they put on display. Each candidate arrived with a slew of supporters in tow, many marching to the dinner from nearby rallies. The dinner, which drew more than 6,000 activists, gave supporters of each campaign the opportunity to literally size up their competition in the same room …

Toshiba to sell image sensor business unit to Sony

When we think about the imaging sensors used in many smartphone cameras, most would attribute those parts to Sony, whose imaging technology widely regarded as class leading.

Toshiba, no slacker in technology, has an imaging business too. It competes with Sony, but aside from the HTC One M9, we bet you would be hard-pressed to name five smartphone equipped with its sensors inside.

None of that may matter in the near future as Toshiba, who has been a victim of its own soap-opera-drama stemming from two huge accounting scandals over the past two years. The media circus has wrought havoc … – Source

'Doctor Who' Episode 6 review: Who wants to live forever?

Doctor Who Season 9 Episode 6: “The Woman Who Lived”
A

Doctor Who is forever. To all intents and purposes, its hero is immortal

Sure, the Doctor could die without regenerating, and many (too many) episodes rely on the notion that his life is in some kind danger. But we all know the worst that can happen is that he’ll be forced to change his face one more time, and that we’ll be prepared for that event long before the fact. (Of course, the real worst that could happen is that the show will be cancelled by the BBC again and go off the air for another 15 years before being revived by another wily showrunner — but given its global popularity, that doesn’t seem likely any time soon) …

The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land biting into the Play Store on October 29th

Nobody said a zombie apocalypse would be fair, but we are still upset that The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land hit iOS before coming to Android, a couple weeks ago. Like zombies, we have been starving for our own piece of the action since then, but the wait is soon to be over.

We have just received word that The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land is hitting the Google Play Store come October 29th (next Thursday). The game is free to download from the Apple App Store, so we can assume Android users will get the same kind of love.

For those who have been hiding away in some dark warehouse, The Walking Dead: No Man’s Land is an official title Next Games and AMC worked on to bring a different experience to mobile gamers. It’s nothing like the Telltale series, so be prepared for a different approach. In fact, this title offers turn-based combat and character progression, making it more similar to an RPG.

The goal is to survive and build your own safe haven after escaping from Terminus. Players have access to 6 classes and plenty of characters to choose from. Like in the show, each of them will have unique abilities and skills, which will truly engulf you into the idea of making the right choices to stay alive.

To make matters even better, the game is guided and voiced by Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus), one of the most popular fan favorites of the acclaimed zombie-packed TV series. And there will also be exclusive content you haven’t encountered elsewhere.
