Grids of defects make diamonds practical for quantum computing

The hope diamond. (credit: 350z33)

One of the more exciting things happening in physics at the moment is the development of quantum computers that may actually be able to do something useful. But, as we get closer to that glorious day, one of the big questions remaining is: what type of basic technology should be used as the basis for quantum computers? We know from our experience with classical computers that whatever technology wins is going to dominate for a long time. For instance, even though silicon-based integrated circuits were known to be worse than their germanium-based equivalent, silicon won for engineering reasons. Ever since, other semiconductor materials have remained niche, despite continued development. And they’ll likely stay niche until silicon is tapped out.

The decision on silicon is ancient history, and the consequences are set. But with quantum computers, we haven’t reached such a decision point yet. As such, a bazillion ideas are competing, and we get to sit on the sidelines and cheer the players on.

One approach, which has been quietly awaiting its next moment, is nitrogen-vacancy centers (NV- centers) in diamond. Although there have been a lot of exciting developments in terms of showing that NV- centers have excellent characteristics for qubits (a unit of quantum information), no one seems to be able to find a practical way to link anything more than a couple of qubits. Those days may be coming to an end, though, according to a recent study in Nature Photonics, the results of which could shift NV- centers off the bench, back onto the playing field.

Galaxy S8 launch may be pushed back to April event in New York

The expected launch of Samsung’s next flagship smartphone has naturally dominated recent headlines. Over the past few years, it has been typical of the South Korean firm to roll its latest Galaxy S device out at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, usually held in February-March. Next year’s event will kick off on 27th February and hitherto, it’s been anticipated that the so-called Galaxy S8 would be unveiled therein. However, a new report indicates that Sammy could wait until April to showcase it’s next big thing at a special event in New York.

Cats on Instagram wish you a meowy Christmas and a happy mew year

One of the saving graces of the holiday season and all the stress that comes with it, are those certain pet owners with iron wills and a love of costumes.

#ChristmasCatsOfInstagram is a hashtag that exists — for no other purpose than our pure enjoyment. And it’s life changing — just see for yourself.

There’s really nothing like a disgruntled cat dressed as a Christmas elf to brighten one’s spirits.

Two tails are better than one

The holidays are better when shared. Though to be fair, the joy of sharing is highly dependent on the company with whom one find themselves. Good thing for these cat duos, they go together like a daggy knitted sweater and holiday cheer. …

Sobering political statements disguised as 'Aussie Christmas Carol'

If you’ve ever met an Australian, you’ll know that they love talking about how different and special they are because they have nice weather during Christmas. Opposite seasons — who knew?!

But unlike the wealth of “Aussie Christmas carols” that came before it (yes, they’re a thing), the latest carol from Down Under turns the “holidays in hot weather” cliché on its head.

The subversive YouTubers over at Aunty Donna have written a protest song disguised as a carol.

One minute they’re singing about wearing shorts and thongs (flip flops to you) on Christmas Day. The next minute they’re sharing horrifying facts about Australia that are too often pushed out of public discourse. …

Before the Kardashians, Zsa Zsa Gabor was the ultimate socialite

Before the world was keeping up with the Kardashians, they were captivated by Zsa Zsa Gabor, whose death was announced on Sunday. She was 99.

Born in Hungary, she set the stage for socialites like Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton by being more famous for her glamorous lifestyle than her acting career. (She even married Conrad Hilton, who founded the Hilton Hotel chain — the second of the nine husbands she would have over the course of her life.)

Growth as a false signal in Y Combinator startups

One has to appreciate how Paul Graham built Y Combinator into the world’s flagship accelerator. In fact, I have yet to meet a founder who regrets joining the program. But after stepping away from the YC scene for five years and then returning to observe the last two demo days, I wonder if some of the views Paul shared in his original, widely read Essays are being taken to absurd extremes. Climate scientist who got death threats says he fears more attacks under Trump

U.S. climate scientists say they worry the incoming Trump administration might do more than cut off their research funding. Some also fear they could receive personal attacks and death threats simply for doing their jobs.

Michael Mann, a climate researcher at Penn State University, said he knows exactly what that’s like.

Over the last decade, Mann has been singled out by Republican senators and Pennsylvania and Virginia officials, who falsely accused the scientist of distorting his data and perpetuating the “hoax” that human activities are causing climate change.
