Inside Twitter's office for the first debate live stream

Cheers erupted at the word “tweet.”

In the basement of Twitter’s office in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, dozens of Twitter employees and guests celebrated when Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton called out her opponent Donald Trump’s habits on the microblogging site.

“A man who can be provoked by a tweet should not have his fingers anywhere near nuclear codes,” Clinton said onstage at Hofstra University Monday during the first presidential debate.

It wasn’t glowing commentary for Trump, but it was the clear indication of the significant role Twitter has played this election that inspired enthusiasm inside Twitter’s office — as well as by executives, like Twitter’s Chief Financial Officer Anthony Noto, online. …

Spotify finally launches in Japan — and with song lyrics

Music streaming service Spotify has launched officially in Japan, the company announced on Thursday.

Similar to its service offerings in other markets, there will be an ad-based free tier, and premium ad-free subscription for 980 yen ($9.65) a month.

But not everyone will be able to log in today. Spotify’s initial launch will be on an invite-only basis before opening more broadly. Users need to request for an invite on Spotify’s Japanese website.

Spotify also announced that users in Japan will be first globally to get song lyrics on mobile and desktop. It had the feature on desktop last year, but had to stop the service when it …

Hong Kong police try to join in the pen-pineapple-apple-pen fun in the most cringe way possible

While it seems parodies of that damn “pen pineapple apple pen” song can’t stop popping up everywhere, perhaps some parodies shouldn’t be attempted.

The Hong Kong Police Force thought it would get in with the PPAP madness with its own “BBSB” — Belt Buckle Seat Belt.

Most parodies have taken the original audio and lip synced over it, miming the same actions for pens, apples and pineapples as the character Piko-Taro does.

But the Hong Kong police’s parody replaces the audio with a tuneless version of the original ditty, as police officers (presumably) tell you to buckle up while miming the action in the car. …

Study finds Trump 4 times more likely than Clinton to 'mock or criticize' on Twitter

Donald Trump doesn’t usually hold back.

Whether it’s an attack on a Gold Star family, an entire religion or a private citizen like the former Miss Universe he called “Miss Piggy,” Trump’s not exactly a stranger to insults. Now, though, there’s also statistical evidence to back that assertion up.

A new study has found that the Republican presidential candidate is four times more likely to “mock or criticize” other candidates, media or government in a tweet than his primary opponent, Hillary Clinton.

Around 10 percent of his tweets, meanwhile, contain “uncivil” language, like the words “liar” or “dumb puppets,” according to the study, led by Jayeon Lee of Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. …

Xiaomi plans to open 1000 retail outlets over the next four years

For a startup that only sold its first smartphone back in 2011, Xiaomi hasn’t done all that badly. While its primary focus has been China and the Asian market, the company has been making its moves towards a more global audience. With much of its growth having been generated through web sales hitherto, the firm intends to offer consumers a more hands-on experience, with plans for 1000 brick-and-mortar retail outlets by 2020.
Despite skyrocketing to dizzying heights during its early days, stiff recent competition from local rivals like Huawei, … – Source

[Deal Alert] Get an ASUS ZenWatch 2 1.63" with HyperCharge for just $119 from Amazon and B&H ($30 off)

Just last week, we featured a deal for the smaller 1.45″ ZenWatch 2 with a metal band. Now, we’re back with another ASUS smartwatch offer that I think is even better than the previous one; Amazon and B&H are both offering the 1.63″ ZenWatch 2 with HyperCharge for just $119. Not only is this a larger, slightly newer model, but it’s also $10 less than the deal from last week.

$119 is an extremely small price to pay for a watch that has specs this modern.

Fitbit Blaze fitness tracker gets more smartwatch-like features in latest software update

When Fitbit launched their Blaze fitness tracker earlier this year, the company’s first smartwatch-like device wasn’t met with the greatest reception ever. Fitbit tried to offer a fitness tracker with the most smartwatch features that they’ve ever had in one of their products, but the end result really wasn’t all that great. While the small amount of watch faces and arguably unattractive design were certainly letdowns, the biggest issue with the Blaze was the fact that it didn’t support any third-party notifications. The device was able to alert you of any calls, texts, or calendar reminds you … – Source
