Sorry, Eileen Collins: Here’s why America is already great in space

Retired US Astronaut Eileen Collins arrives speak on the third day of the Republican National Convention on Wednesday. (credit: Jim Watson/AFP/Getty Images)

In the week or so since it became known that Eileen Collins would appear at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night, the space community has buzzed with questions and concerns. A brilliant astronaut and the first woman to command a space shuttle, Collins has a sterling reputation among the flight directors, astronauts and engineers at NASA who worked with her. Why would she jump into the political fray, many asked? And for Donald Trump, of all people?

I felt the answer was pretty simple. Like a lot of astronauts Collins comes from a military background (she’s a colonel in the U.S. Air Force), and therefore more likely to be conservative politically. Perhaps she had had discussions with the Trump people, and they endorsed her view that NASA should return to the Moon before going to Mars. In any case, it’s not like she’s the first former astronaut to take on politics (Hello, John Glenn and Harrison Schmitt).

So on a night when Ted Cruz stole the show at the convention for political observers, the four-minute speech given by Collins garnered the most interest among the space industry. Her remarks were largely a fairly standard call to restore some glory to America’s space program, and she touched on how it has been unacceptable to rely on Russia for transport to the International Space Program for the last five years. America can, and must do better than that, Collins said.

#PrayforSyria trends after U.S.-coalition airstrikes kill dozens of civilians in Syria

U.S.-led airstrikes on an Islamic State (ISIS)-held village in Syria have killed dozens of civilians, including many women and children, in what is considered the deadliest attack on civilians since the start of the campaign against ISIS.

Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said at least 56 civilians, of which at least 11 were children, were killed in the northern countryside of Manbij, with “tens of others” injured.

The Turkey-based Syrian Institute for Justice put the death toll at 85, saying entire families were wiped out in the strikes.

Musk’s Master Plan has solar for everyone, but investors aren’t buying the dream — yet

The Tesla “Master Plan Part Deux” published tonight by founder Elon Musk proposes quite a lot of major projects, but perhaps the most far-reaching of them all is the plan to put solar on every roof and a battery in every garage. And to do that, he not-so-subtly hints, Tesla and SolarCity will need to be more than friends. Read More

Corning’s new Gorilla Glass 5 survives drops “up to 80%” of the time

Corning’s Gorilla Glass is the display cover of choice for many smartphones, tablets, and convertibles. Gorilla Glass 4 has been with us for nearly two years now, but it’s time for it to move aside for the latest version: Gorilla Glass 5.

Gorilla Glass is great at resisting scratches, but it’s prone to shattering when dropped. With Gorilla Glass 5, Corning claims the glass is now able to survive more drops than ever. The official claim is that the new stuff survives “1.6-meter, shoulder-height drops onto hard, rough surfaces up to 80% of the time.”

Corning claims this is “up to 4X better in drop failure height than competitive glasses” but we’re struggling to name a single competitive glass. (Samsung might have made one once on the Galaxy Nexus? Maybe Apple?) As usual Apple suppliers aren’t allowed to mention their involvement, but other than iOS devices, Gorilla Glass has a near monopoly in smartphones.

Corning says next Gorilla Glass will be extra drop resistant

Your next smartphone could be a little less likely to break when you drop it.

Corning, makers of the Gorilla Glass used in many smartphone displays, introduced the next generation of the material Wednesday at an event at its Palo Alto, California, facility. Gorilla Glass 5, the company says, is more likely to survive drops from higher heights than previous generations.

To make Gorilla Glass 5 more drop resistant, the company tested it with higher drops during its development, explained Corning’s VP and general manager, John Bayne. While previous generations were primarily tested for drops from pocket height or lower, Gorilla Glass 5 was tested at 1.6 meters, closer to “shoulder height.” At that height, Gorilla Glass 5 survived drops at rates “up to 80%.” …
