Sarah Silverman on depression: 'It feels like I'm desperately homesick, but I'm home'

Those who are familiar with Sarah Silverman’s comedy career may be startled by the actress’s upcoming turn in I Smile Back, in which she plays a woman struggling with depression and bipolarity

Though her character is fictional, Silverman’s experience on set reminded her of her own struggles with depression — which she details in a new essay for Glamour.

Silverman agreed to star in I Smile Back, based on Amy Koppelman’s novel, without much expectation that it would get produced. “Three years later I got an email saying, ‘It’s happening, we got the funding!'” Silverman writes in her essay. “I replied-all: ‘Yay!’ And then I collapsed on the floor of my bathroom, shaking. What had I done? I knew playing Laney Brooks would take me back to a very dark place.” …

TrendForce: Samsung falls below 25% market share in Q3 as Chinese competitors grow

Global research firm TrendForce has outed its smartphone shipment report for Q3 2015. It shows that worldwide smartphone shipments for the period grew by 9.1% over the previous quarter and total 332 million units.

Samsung is still the market leader, but its market share in Q3 has fallen below the 25% mark. As a result, the company has reduced its projected Galaxy S6 shipment to 40 million units. Notably, the company is yet to ship 10 million units of its newly launched Galaxy Note5 phone.

However, the company continues to lose ground in the low-end and mid-range smartphone spectrum due to fierce competition by Chinese makers. By TrendForce estimates, Samsung will see its first even decline of annual smartphone shipments in 2015 with 1% year-on-year drop.

On the other hand, the company anticipates Apple to keep the momentum of the iPhone 6 duo with the new generation iPhone 6s family. The company is expected to ship a total of 223.7 million units in 2015.

Chinese smartphone vendors are leading in volume and are responsible for 150 million units. That’s a 16.3% increase quarter-over-quarter. Most notable of all is Huawei, which did above what analysts were expecting.

Huawei becomes the first Chinese smartphone brand to reach 100 million units in shipments and cements its position as the third-largest vendor worldwide.

In spite of Xiaomi’s rather unsuccessful attempt to enter the high-end market with the Mi Note, the company is still on track to sell a lot of mid-range devices like the Redmi Note 2 and Mi 4c in the second half of 2015. The company is expected to ship a nudge below 100 million units in 2015.

Bros gold: The new iPhone makes it easier for guys to love pink

For many American men, the color pink has traditionally been public enemy No. 1.

But if the new iPhone 6S in rose gold is any indication, a modern infatuation with the blush hue seems to be slowly infiltrating the mainstream — and men are far from exempt.

More and more designers for spring 2016 utilized and embraced the color pink as seen here at David Hart’s presentation.

Still, men aren’t readily embracing the color with open arms. It’s a slow and cautious race, a power walk if you will

Tizen-powered and India-bound Samsung Z3 is official: affordable price, entry-level specs

Samsung has a new phone in its portfolio, but it is not a Galaxy — it was decided that its hardly populated Tizen lineup needs to grow. Guess what, it gre 200% with the arrival of the Samsung Z3, a device with entry-level specs that succeeds last year’s Samsung Z1 and will allow willing adopters to meet Samsung’s own OS up close and personal.
In terms of design, it’s hard to miss the effect the Note5 has had on the Z3, especially at the back. We are quite doubtful that the Z3 uses metal and Gorilla Glass 4 in its exterior, though, as we are most likely dealing with … – Source

'Love and Sex with Robots' event may be cancelled after Malaysia pulls the plug

SINGAPORE — The organisers of the international Love and Sex with Robots (LSR) conference have been caught off guard after Malaysian authorities earlier this week declared the event illegal — and unless they can find a backup plan they’ve said the conference may not happen

One of the academic conference’s co-chairs, Adrian Cheok, told Mashable “this latest development was a little surprising for us. We’re not sure if we can proceed with the congress.”

“We didn’t have a backup,” he said.

Cloud Chasers: a moving game that tackles issues with immigration while staying fun

There’s plenty of time-killers out there, but very few games manage to spark emotion like the upcoming Cloud Chasers – A Journey of Hope title will. This game comes from Blindflug Studios, which is also responsible for First Strike, a title which encompasses the problems with nuclear warfare. The team is not short on social issues, and this time around they are targeting immigration.

This is an issue that affects plenty of countries and communities, but the topic really hits close to home to us United States residents. Especially for those of us who live along the border, where struggle, laws and sometimes even death are part of the harsh reality we must face on the daily. It’s not an easy conversation… ever. But Cloud Chasers manages to bring consciousness in a very light-hearted manner, and we have to give them props for that.

Cloud Chasers – A Journey of Hope tells the story of Francisco and his daughter Amelia, a couple of immigrants in search of a better life beyond the desert, in a world above the clouds where the privileged live. Of course, just like in real life, this promised land is not easy to reach. There are robots guarding the desert and trying to stop you from reaching their cities. Users must also worry about survival and collect water in order to keep moving. You will depend on Amelia’s fun glider to accomplish that.

Guide a small family through five deadly deserts to reach the gateway to the world above the clouds. It’s a dangerous journey filled with a multitude of unique narrative encounters. Make your decisions wisely, manage your resources, use equipment to your advantage and fill up your precious water reserves by flying through the clouds with your trusty glider.

There's a chicken trying to tweet in English for the first time

An Australian fast-food chain is trying to get a chicken to tweet a five letter word in English, and naturally, we’re all on the edge of our seats.

Australia loves its animals. We’re home to some terrifying, deadly creatures, kangaroos that could go toe-to-toe with Mayweather, and nothing beats a casual paddle board with a couple of whales

But it’s 2015. It’s not enough to just watch baby emus and kangaroo joeys cuddle one another, or to have kittens delivered to your door. We want more, and Western Australian fast food chain Chicken Treat is giving it to us.

Review: 'Crimson Peak' is campy gothic horror that won't actually scare you

Crimson Peak is a deliciously gothic soap opera masquerading as a horror film

The film, co-written and directed by Guillermo del Toro, is a campy romp through a haunted house, loaded with stunning visuals that put every inch of its $55 million budget on display. It’s so gorgeous to look at and so carefully put together that you might not mind the meandering plot.

Hillary Clinton: Bernie Sanders isn't tough enough on guns

Bernie Sanders is “not at all” tough enough on guns, according to Hillary Clinton.

“Senator Sanders did vote five times against the Brady Bill. Since it was passed, more than 2 million prohibited purchases have been prevented.”

Sanders’s record on guns has been under increased scrutiny in the wake of mass shootings in a Charleston, S.C. church and at a community college in Oregon.

He voted against the Brady Bill in the 1990s requiring background checks and in 2005, he voted in favor of a bill to shield gun manufacturers and dealers from lawsuits. Sanders who represents Vermont, which has a high level of gun ownership and some of the least restrictive gun laws in the country, defended his record “as a senator from a rural state.” …

Artist turns pumpkins into museum-worthy works of art

Sadly, every pumpkin that Edward Cabral carves this year will begin to rot shortly after he finishes his gourd art

“We had some storms come through this weekend, which knocked out about 60 pumpkins from the show, so we were busy carving replacements,” Cabral wrote Mashable in an email. Definitely a dangerous consequence of working with a perishable medium, like pumpkins.

Cabral, a classically trained 28-year-old artist based out of Chicago, is no stranger to working with unstable media

“I work a lot in media that cannot be archived, like food and unfired ceramic, because I enjoy watching my work decay,” Cabral said. A quick glance at his …
