CES is not a traditional place to unveil smartphones but that didn’t stop Asus from garnering tons of interest for its new Zenfones. The Asus Zenfone AR and Zenfone 3 Zoom stole the show, collecting over 40% of votes.
The AR functionality is novel, the step after VR. The Zenfone AR does support Google’s Daydream VR too, however. It seems that the high-quality cameras and promising battery life were equally important for the positive reception.
The 2017 line of Samsung Galaxy A phones came in second with half the votes. These bring Galaxy S7 features (Always On Display, waterproofing) to…
Welcome to the 174th edition of Android Apps Weekly! Here are the headlines from the last week:
Adobe is reportedly working on an app that will let you edit images with your voice. They released a YouTube video that demonstrates the tech at work. In the video, the man crops the image, flips it around, and then shares it on Facebook. It’s not currently available for anybody, but the demo is definitely promising. It could be months or years before we see something like this hit the market, though. We’ll just have to be patient for right now.
Google Voice is apparently re-imagining itself again sometime soon. Those who still use the service have likely seen a notification on their dashboard that a new version of Google Voice is coming to consumers. We don’t know what the features are yet, but they are definitely coming. Some have even had Google Voice call them and leave a cryptic message about speed dial. It’s been a while since Voice got an upgrade so here’s hoping it’s awesome.
Facebook made headlines this week when it was reported that the social media network may start using mid-video ads. This means that you’ll see an ad in the middle of your video instead of at the beginning or the end. The feature is currently in testing so Facebook can see how users react to it. We imagine that it’ll make its way to Facebook proper if the blow back isn’t too bad.
Fitbit has been busying buying up smartwatch companies. Apparently, they are also working on an app store. According to CEO James Park, they want this task completed as soon as humanly possible. They didn’t say why, but the popular conjecture is that the company is working on its own smartwatch. That’s where all the signs are pointing. We don’t know much yet, but we’ll keep an eye out and let you know when something happens.
The Google Hangouts API will be shutting down in April. The announcement came late last week and had some people legitimately worried about the service. Basically what’s happening is that a bunch of apps that use the Hangouts API will be denied access. We’re talking about the apps in Google Hangouts video chat that puts a mustache on your face or makes fun sound effects. The good news is that the app itself isn’t going anywhere.

Manny Gutierrez is a makeup YouTuber with millions of subscribers and a Maybelline ambassadorship. He also has a dad who does not seem to take haters lightly.
In early January, the conservative blogger Matt Walsh, who often shares anti-LGBTQ messages on Twitter, posted a picture of Gutierrez wearing makeup, writing “Dads, this is why you need to be there to raise your sons.”

Gutierrez did not have time for Walsh, responding that his dad, quite simply, is proud of who he is. “Being a man isn’t about how ‘tough’ or ‘masculine’ you are,” he tweeted Saturday. “It’s about taking care of the ones you love.” …

A little more than a month before the Motorola DROID was launched on Verizon, kicking off Androidmania, the carrier introduced the HTC Imagio. Donald Trump has made countless racist, misogynistic and downright reprehensible remarks throughout the course of his life, but perhaps Donald Trump is the one who has truly been bullied.
This appears to be the mindset of Guardians of the Galaxy and Avatar star Zoe Saldana, who, though not personally a supporter of the Republican president-elect, feels his victory is due to “bullies” who insulted him during his campaign.

Good news, meme-makers, The Young Pope’s Jude Law is well aware of the exquisite internet mockery surrounding his new HBO drama.
In fact, much like a benevolent pontiff might offer benediction for your sins, Law has blessed our creative exploits.
“Having spent the last week in New York and here doing lots of press, I’ve become very aware,” Law told reporters at HBO’s presentation at the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Los Angeles when asked for his take on the show’s online popularity.
