"Funny Girl" Barbara Streisand confirms Siri update

Last month, we told you that Barbara Streisand had revealed in an interview that she had spoken to Apple CEO Tim Cook about the way Siri would say her name. The voice-activated virtual personal assistant pronounced the star’s last name as Streizand, which apparently was driving her crazy. During an interview on NPR, Streisand mentioned that she had spoken with Cook and the executive promised her that a software update dated September 30 would make the change.

Well, it appears that the update has already been made. A tweet sent out by Streisand a couple of hours ago reads, “@Tim_Cook @Apple … – Source

Uber and Lyft expand their push into rides for senior citizens

Early this year, Lyft and Uber announced they would find ways for Americans without smartphones — particularly senior citizens — to use their apps.

Those partnerships are now expanding to get more elderly Americans access to the ride-hailing services.

Both companies recently announced new partnerships with healthcare providers to allow their clients to use Lyft and Uber to get to doctors’ appointments, family outings and wherever else those under home care might want to go.

Warner Brothers ordered Google to remove several of its own Web pages from search results on the grounds they infringed the media giant’s copyright.

A posting on the Lumen database of cease and desist letters revealed the bizarre requests, which were sent by monitoring company Vobile on behalf of Warner Brothers.

It asked for the official pages of Batman: The Dark Knight and The Matrix films to be censored by Google under the terms of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA.) A few days earlier, according to TorrentFreak, Warner Brothers had requested that the official Web page for movie The Lucky One should be removed from Google’s search results in the same way.

Galaxy Note7 will no longer pack in Samsung SDI batteries

The faulty battery packs that caused some Samsung Galaxy Note7 units to explode during charging, forcing Samsung to announce a global recall, were manufactured by the South Korean company’s own SDI subsidiary.

Reports out of Samsung’s home country are suggesting that the tech giant has now decided to stop using Samsung SDI’s batteries in the phablet.

“As a follow-up of the battery issue, we decided to temporally stop using Samsung SDI’s battery for Galaxy Note 7,” several Korean media outlets quoted sources from Samsung Electronics as saying.

Don't bin them: You can mail back your used Nespresso coffee pods

It’s well noted that single-use coffee pods are bad for the environment, and the unwaning popularity of Nespresso (damn you, George Clooney) isn’t helping.

So it’s a wise move for the caffeine purveyors to launch mail-able recycling satchels Down Under in partnership with Australia Post. All you’ll need to do is pop your used pods in the satchel, put it in a mailbox or drop it off at a post office, and it’ll be sent off for recycling.

German spies violated law, must delete XKeyscore database—watchdog

Enlarge (credit: Dr. Johannes W. Dietrich)

Germany’s spies seriously violated the country’s laws multiple times, according to a secret report from its federal data protection commissioner Andrea Voßhoff.

The legal analysis, leaked to Netzpolitik, was made in July 2015 following a visit by data protection officials to Bad Aibling in southern Germany, in the wake of Edward Snowden’s revelations about surveillance activities there. Bad Aibling is jointly run by Germany’s intelligence agency, the Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), and the NSA.

As well as listing 18 serious legal violations, and filing 12 formal complaints—the German data watchdog’s most severe legal instrument—the secret report said that the BND created seven databases without the appropriate legal approval. As a result, commissioner Voßhoff said that all seven databases should be deleted, and could not be used again.

A new 7-inch tablet could be on the way from Google and Huawei

The tablet market is not doing well, there’s no surprise in that. The most interesting things in the tablet space are the ways that manufacturers are finding to mash-up the laptop and tablet form factor, like the Google Pixel C or the Lenovo Yoga Book. But, maybe there is still a market for tablets, at least Google and Huawei are rumored to have one in the pipeline.
According to Evan Blass, Google and Huawei are working on a 7-inch tablet that could be released by the end of the year. Blass also said the tablet would feature 4GB of RAM, but no other details were given. One notable … – Source

Trump campaign gets in Twitter trouble again with Photoshopped poll image

Donald Trump’s campaign can’t seem to get out of its own way on social media.

On Monday morning, Trump began heralding poll results from Iowa and the key swing state of Ohio. He mentioned the results at a rally and tweeted out nifty graphics on his account to share the numbers.

The only problem: he kept crediting an outlet that doesn’t commission such polls: FiveThirtyEight.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 recall has a 22-year-old precedent

Samsung’s recent mass recall of the Galaxy Note 7 is being regarded as an unprecedented and potentially damaging move on the part of the Korean tech titan, but it’s worth noting that it’s very much in line with Samsung’s business philosophy. Although some are predicting that the recall will put the company on unstable footing even as they’re readying to go toe to toe with the new iPhone, their willingness to make mass recalls is actually what helped establish Samsung as an industry leader.

According to a report in the Korea Herald, what we’re seeing is the echo of a change in company policy all the way back in 1993. At the time, the company suffered from an abysmal defective rate. Their products were assembled from components so poorly manufactured that workers had to use knives to cut misshapen plastic parts so that they could fit into the washing machines they were designed for.

After watching footage from production and assembly, chairman Lee Kun-hee reprimanded the company’s executives and called for a sweeping change in the company’s policies. He told Samsung workers to “change everything but your wife and kids.”

Over the course of the next year, business practices were gradually implemented that aimed to increase product quality. However, in 1994, Samsung finally had to put their money where their mouth was.

That year Samsung launched the company’s very first wireless phones, which were regarded as revolutionary at the time. However, these devices suffered from an absolutely catastrophic defective rate of 11.8 percent.

Samsung elected to recall 150,000 of these phones from the market, and they were destroyed in front of 2000 employees. The total value of these devices was somewhere around 5 billion won.

The company was again tested in 2009, when they were forced to recall 210,000 refrigerators after some of them had been found to spontaneously explode. This constituted the largest home appliance recall that had ever been executed at the time.

Samsung elected to recall 150,000 of these phones from the market, and they were destroyed in front of 2000 employees.

So while it remains to be seen whether the Galaxy Note 7 recall will have a profound effect on Samsung’s bottom line and the device’s place in the smartphone market, the move is hardly out of character for the company. On some level, this is business as usual for Samsung.

What do you think of Samsung’s history of product recall? Is this an admirable commitment to quality or evidence that they are prone to rush products to the market without sufficient testing? Let us know your take in the comments below!
