Huawei Mate 8 passes through FCC

The Huawei Mate 8 was announced back in November for the Chinese market with promises for more details to come at CES. Today brings great new for US availability of the Mate 8 – the handset has already been certified by the FCC, which means its release on the US market is imminent and should follow shortly after the expo.

The documents in question don’t really detail much about the hardware of the unit, bearing the model number NXT-L09, but we can only expect specs to match up with the already announced Chinese version.

Packing an in-house Kirin 950 SoC, with four high-power Cortex-A72 cores, clocked at up to 2.3 GHz and an additional four power-saving Cortex-A53 ones, working at 1.8 GHz, the Huawei Mate 8 also offers a Mali T880MP4 GPU, pushing pixels on a spacious 6.0-inch FHD IPS display.

Memory options include 3GB/32GB, 4GB/64GB, and 4GB/128GB variants. The camera setup consists of Sony’s latest IMX298 16MP sensor at the back and an 8MP shooter on the front and a 4000 mAh battery is powering the show. The OEM’s industry-leading fingerprint tech is also on board.

Judge knocks Uber over latest attempt to bar drivers from class-actions

(credit: Uber)

SAN FRANCISCO—On Thursday, a federal judge admonished Uber over its questionable newly issued labor agreement. He also ruled that the new agreement does not affect members of the certified class of California drivers who are currently suing Uber over whether they should be considered employees.

Uber’s lawyer, Theodore Boutrous, said the company believed it was within its right to suddenly send out the new document last Friday, which drivers had to agree to in order to continue driving for the company.

“Whatever your intent, I’m going to tell you my intent, I had no intent to say go ahead and issue notices,” US District Court Judge Edward Chen said during the hearing in O’Connor v. Uber, which was over two hours long.

Xiaomi Mi 5 rumor review: specs, features, release date, everything we know so far

Despite unleashing a couple of top-end phones (Mi Note, Mi Note Pro, Mi 4i), Xiaomi did not release a flagship smartphone in 2015. Yes, we witnessed the arrival of the Xiaomi Mi 4i and the so-so Mi 4c, but the anticipated Mi 5 remained a mirage of sorts. Interestingly, the rumor mill never ceased to come up with possible release dates for the device; actually, there were a couple possible dates during each of the preceding months. However, Xiaomi kept mostly mum and unveiled no Mi 5.
However, the rumor mill has quickened the pace at which it churns out new hearsay and is claiming … – Source

Xiaomi smartphone sales could hit 73 million mark this year, fall short of initial forecast

Back in March this year, Xiaomi Chairman Lei Jun said that the company is aiming to sell somewhere between 80 to 100 million smartphone units in 2015. However, it now looks like the five-year-old firm will miss the target this year.

Jun has released a new statement saying that the final figure could be somewhere around 73 million. This came a day after he played down the 80 million target, saying that’s not the first priority for the company. “What we care about the most is the rate of customer satisfaction,” he had said.

Quarter-wise, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer sold 15 million units in Q1 2015, followed by 20 million and 18.5 million units in Q2 and Q3, respectively. This suggests that Q4 will see Xiaomi selling over 20 million handsets, making it the most successful quarter for the company.

New Microsoft Translator update is aimed at making conversations more comfortable

Microsoft has released an update to its Translator app that brings along a new conversation feature which allows you to communicate across languages more comfortably by leveraging your phone as well as smartwatch.

This means that now you can enjoy a near-real-time conversation by letting the other party use your smartphone while you use your smartwatch, be it an Android Wear watch or an Apple Watch.

“Instead of two people having to bend over your phone, passing it back and forth, being far from the microphone (and picking up background noise), or being at an uncomfortably close distance with each other, you can now face each other more naturally and at a more comfortable distance, while talking to each other in your own language,” the software giant said in a blog post.

The new feature supports translation to and from seven different languages, including Chinese Mandarin, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Report: Google plans to use its self-driving cars to compete with Uber

Many have speculated whether Google will enter the automotive production fray, building and selling a car to consumers. Google has denied the accusations, insisting it has no interest in manufacturing cars.

Whether it aims to make them or not seems immaterial. That’s because a recent report suggests the tech giant is preparing to launch an Uber competitor backed by a fleet of self-driving cars.
