Machine learning can fix Twitter, Facebook, and maybe even America

Quitting Twitter is easy — I’ve done it a hundred times. Someone called it “a clown car that drove into a gold mine,” and like all clown cars, Twitter makes the passengers get out once in awhile.

If I go back, it’s because I’m addicted. The tight news cycle, tweetstorms, gossip mongers, insight, argument, factoids, snark and one-liners. For an information… Read More

Oppo R9s hands-on: a handsome cameraman

The Oppo R9s is a phone with a striking appearance and an impressive camera. There’s more to it than that, but for our first encounter, we decided to focus on its best qualities. The R-series has produced some alluring mid-rangers, but the R9s has its sights set on a more premium position.

Design

The Oppo R9s design unabashedly borrows from the iPhone, but when a company manages to out-Apple Apple, then we take notice. Clear your mind of the similarities in design and focus on the differences.

Both the R9s and iPhone 7 Plus are phones with 5.5″ screens, but the Oppo is thinner among…

'Gilmore Girls' episode 4 recap: 'Fall' gives us the final four words, and plenty of tears

This recap contains spoilers for episode 4 of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, titled “Fall.” And if you already need a refresher, check out our recap of episode 3.

“Mom?”

“Yeah?”

“I’m pregnant.”

Those are the heart-stopping final four words that Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino always planned to end her beloved series with.

When you consider the show was supposed to end almost one decade ago, with no possibility of a Netflix revival at the time, it seems impossibly cruel — right up there with The Sopranos in terms of a cliffhanger ending.

As Lorelai might say, “full freakin’ circle” — especially since, if the Palladinos had been involved with Season 7, Rory would’ve been 23 when she dropped the pregnancy bombshell on her newlywed mom. That’s not quite as young as Lorelai was (16) when she became pregnant with Rory, but it’s certainly young enough to disrupt Rory’s life and career. …

Coming soon? An FCC that handles only radio spectrum?

Up until last year, the FCC was largely an industry-facing regulatory broker of sorts. It was created back in the 1930s as part of the Communications Act of 1934, and has a mandate that covers telecommunications utilities in all 50 states.

Then, in the early spring of 2015, the five commissioners voted 3-2 to classify the internet as a utility, rather than an information service, subject to Title II regulations, also written in the 1930s.

That brought a formal doctrine of “net neutrality” to the FCC, and just like that telemarketer robocall interrupts your dinner, the FCC has also … – Source

Galaxy S8 might have of 6GB of RAM, 256GB of storage

With the Note7’s discontinuation, Samsung will be on everyone’s watch with high expectations of the company’s next flagship device: the Samsung Galaxy S8. And although we haven’t seen any leaks of the hardware, the rumor mill has been churning out lots of news with no signs of slowing down any time soon.

Some new rumors deciphered by TechTastic on Weibo suggest that the Galaxy S8 will feature a 256GB storage option. And it’s not yet known if this is intended to be a standard size or larger storage option. The S8 is also rumored to come with 6GB of RAM, a good decision considering even the…

Xiaomi Mi 6 to land in March with Snapdragon 835 chipset

This definitely feels a bit like deja vu. Remember how yesterday a rumor from China claimed the Oppo Find 9 would launch in March with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 on board? Well, that got debunked in the meantime, but apparently there’s another Chinese smartphone that will actually be out in March sporting Qualcomm’s latest and greatest.

Yes, the Xiaomi Mi 6. According to one iSuppli analyst, this will be the first Chinese device to feature the upcoming SoC, and will be released at around the same time as Samsung’s Galaxy S8 will get its international launch – as it happens, that model will…

'Gilmore Girls' episode 2 recap: 'Spring' sees Rory spiraling

This recap contains spoilers for episode 2 of Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, titled “Winter.” Check out our recap of episode 1.

If the first episode of Netflix’s Gilmore Girls revival was designed to show Emily in turmoil, episode 2 is all about Rory’s descent into madness.

As Lorelai points out late in the episode, life has been pretty good to Rory so far; she’s had a privileged life with a supportive family, enviable education and an eclectic array of men literally fighting over her through the years, so she hasn’t really had to try hard at anything.

Indeed, as “Spring” proves, whenever the going gets tough, Rory’s default setting is to throw a tantrum and quit — just as she did when Logan’s father, Mitchum, told her she wasn’t cut out to be a journalist in Season 5, which prompted her to drop out of Yale and move in with her grandparents. …
