Singapore plans to reduce the role of cash and checks in its economy by encouraging banks to switch to digital payments, according to the head of the country’s central bank.

“For consumers, the use of cash for daily payments is high,” Ravi Menon, managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, said at a financial technology conference on Friday. “For businesses, the use of checks is relatively high too.”

Menon said cash in circulation in Singapore is the equivalent of 8.8 percent of gross domestic product, compared to just over 2 percent in Sweden.

Research says using GIFs on Tinder increases responses by 30 percent

Dating is hard, online dating is its own hell, and opening lines can make you want to cease human contact altogether. It’s awkward to straddle the line between just the right amount of forwardness and tact to total strangers when you’re not actually interacting in person.

But panic no more: new research by Dr. Jess Carbino, a sociologist at Tinder suggests that users are 30 percent more likely to get a response from matches if they open with a GIF.

“Instead of searching for the ultimate opening line, sending a GIF lets you show your personality and sense of humor,” Carbino told Mashable via email. GIFs immediately lighten up the tone of a conversation and are a great way to push past the small talk.” …

The U.S. will no longer have the final say on internet domain names

The National Telecommunications Information Admistration (NTIA) announced via blog post on Tuesday that it will hand over the internet domain naming system, or DNS, to a non-U.S. entity: the multi-stakeholder nonprofit organization based in Los Angeles called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

Essentially, the DNS, which links web addresses to a site’s servers via an IP address, will become privatized. The system will remain the same; it’s just changing hands. The average Internet user will likely be unaffected.

LOS ANGELES — What would happen if Burning Man and VidCon merged into one festival?

That’s the premise behind Funny or Die’s latest series Tween Fest, developed from a popular Upgrade Citizens Brigade (UCB) sketch show in Los Angeles. (Mashable debuts an exclusive clip of the latest episode above).

“When we wrote Tween Fest as a live show, we never intended for it to be anything more than that,” co-creators and UCB-ers Nick Ciarelli and Brad Evans told Mashable in an email interview. “We just wanted to make a sketch show starring our friend Tar, but the show wound up going well.”

It went so well, in fact, that Funny or Die’s Mike Farah and Joe Ferrell saw the live show, met with with the duo and immediately greenlit a series. …
