This is Aleppo, Mr. Gary Johnson

Gary Johnson, the Libertarian presidential candidate, is under fire for his apparent lack of foreign policy knowledge after he asked “What is Aleppo?” during an interview with MSNBC’s Morning Joe panelist Mike Barnicle.

His stunning response predictably caused an outcry on social media, with Twitter users posting pictures of the city in rubble, people fleeing sites of airstrikes and children covered in blood under the hashtag #ThisIsAleppo. Aleppo was also among Twitter’s Top Trends.

Here is why Apple removed the 3.5mm headset jack from the new iPhone 7

There are quite a few changes and improvements in the iPhone 7, but the most radical and polarizing one is without a doubt the lack of a 3.5mm headset jack, the standard that we’ve been using with out headphones and stereo systems in the last few decades.
A change of massive proportions, the removal of the 3.5mm headset jack is something that will affect everyone: from those audiophiles who have spend hundreds of dollars on expensive headphones and obsessing over music quality to your regular users trying to hook up an iPhone to their home stereo or … – Source

Cricket Wireless introduces most affordable plan yet for $30/month

In the world of wireless service providers that don’t use contracts, Cricket Wireless is undoubtedly one of the more recognizable names out there. The company uses AT&T’s towers for their service, and the decent selection of phones, ability to bring over any GSM handset, and affordable plan options all come together to create a carrier with a lot of solid options. The company recently launched an unlimited data plan for $70/month, and although it may not be the absolute greatest deal when it comes to unlimited plans, it was certainly a nice addition to the carrier’s lineup of plan options.

Three Australian airlines ban Galaxy Note 7 use on flights

Samsung’s recall of some 2.5 million Galaxy Note 7 handsets is underway across the globe. As you’ll surely be aware, some units include faulty batteries that are prone to explode when charging. Samsung, along with numerous retailers and carriers, has been desperately trying to round up those sold prior to the recall, though for now, plenty of potentially dangerous handsets exist in the wild. As such, three Australian airlines have completely banned use of the device on commercial flights for the time being.

The $10,000 golden Apple Watch is no more

Enlarge / The Apple Watch Edition is now ceramic, and also like $9,000 cheaper. (credit: Andrew Cunningham)

When Apple announced its Watch Series 2 earlier today, it said that the watch would come in a new ceramic white finish to complement the returning aluminum and stainless steel finishes. Completely absent was any mention of the Apple Watch Edition branding, which Apple used last year to launch a pair of $10,000-and-up Apple Watches that worked the same way as the cheap ones but were made out of actual gold instead of workaday, plebeian metals.

It turns out that the new ceramic watch is the Apple Watch Edition, and all mentions of the gold versions have been scrubbed from Apple’s site. The company began downplaying the gold watches earlier this year, removing them from the main Apple Watch product page circa the iPhone SE launch.

The “reimagined” ceramic Apple Watch Edition starts at $1,249, roughly twice the cost of a stainless steel Series 2 and three times the cost of an aluminum Series 2 (the Sport branding also seems to have disappeared from the watches themselves, though it still applies to some of the bands). The Edition is still more expensive than the other models and is still intended as a sort of status symbol, but is no longer the hulking monument to conspicuous consumption that it once was. And on Apple’s end, giving buyers an upmarket option they can actually afford is probably a good way to drive up the average selling price. Everyone wins.

The original Apple Watch gets a faster processor and its price reduced

While Apple made it clear that the Apple Watch Series 2 is a considerable upgrade with its thousand nits-bright display, faster dual-core processor, and GPS connectivity, it definitely hasn’t left the original model behind.

In addition to slashing its base model price down to $269, Apple has revamped the Series 1 Apple Watch with the same dual-core processor found inside the second-generation device. This is a nice way of bringing the best-selling smartwatch up to speed and not making it seem too outdated next to the improved model.
