Welcome back to Android Apps Weekly! Here are your headlines for this week:

Google is working on a new feature where people can test out games without downloading the game. When you search for games in Google Search on your Android device, you’ll get the option to try the game right there in the browser. This is a nifty feature that could save people a lot of downloading. It’s rare to see Google turn its back on a feature, but starting with Chrome version 49, the famed browser will no longer merge recent apps with tabs by default. This was something that irked a great many people, myself included, and is the first feature turned off by many people. Soon, we won’t have to turn it off ever again.Disney has announced that a Mickey Mouse themed version of the popular time waster Crossy Road was going to be coming to Android and iOS eventually. There will be over 100 unlockable Disney characters, each with their own soundtracks which actually sounds kind of cool. We don’t have an exact release date yet.T-Mobile has finally gotten YouTube under its BingeOn banner after lengthy negotiations. As part of the talks, YouTube will be doing its own video optimization instead of T-Mobile which is interesting, because soon every other BingeOn member will be able to do the same thing. Score one for net neutrality!Minecraft, one of the world’s most popular games, is coming to VR. Namely, the Samsung Gear VR. This could be a lot of fun as the game would be perfect as a VR title with its limitless game play and exploration. Unlike most games, Minecraft will remain exactly as it is, but you’ll be able to look around as though you were in VR. Word is that it will be out later this year.

Top 10 trending phones of week 11

A funny week for our Top 10 trending chart, indeed. Not much in terms of new entries (the iPhone 5s marks a return, last here in week 6), but the list has been seriously reordered.

Bottom to top, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) has slipped two spots into 10th, keeping big bro A7 (2016) out. Not that it was really that close of a fight, looking at the numbers. It’s the iPhone 5s we already mentioned that occupies 9th, with more than 30% more hits than the current iPhone 6s.

The Lenovo Vibe K4 Note is in 8th, and it’s our latest review subject – make sure you check that out if you’ve…

Emergency security update coming to Nexus devices due to discovered exploit

The promise of monthly security updates is refreshing, but not even keeping devices that protected is enough sometimes. Google has just announced they are releasing a mid-month security patch due to the discovery of an exploit that could bring harm to some devices; namely, the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6.

The issue arose after Google found out about a rooting application using an “unpatched local elevation of privilege vulnerability in the kernel”. What this means is that a malicious application would have the power to affect the code within the software. The only way to fix the handset then would be to re-flash the whole operating system.

It’s still a bit hard to be affected, though. Google does protect you from such apps in the Google Play Store, and even uses Verify Apps to keep external threats away. The only way to have been affected is if you were convinced to manually install the rooting app.

This advisory applies to all unpatched Android devices on kernel versions 3.4, 3.10 and 3.14, including all Nexus devices. Android devices using Linux kernel version 3.18 or higher are not vulnerable.

There’s multiple layers of security, but if you are living on the wilder side you can rest assured the update is coming within a few days. Android partners have also been informed of the issue and the AOSP repository has been updated with the new information. So if you see a random update coming to your phone soon, it’s just Google watching over us.
