Archos Enters The Niche 'Secure Phone' Market With The $850 GranitePhone

Despite some interesting tablet hardware in the earlier days of Android, French manufacturer Archos hasn’t had anything notable to show for several years. Perhaps that’s why the company is jumping into the small but growing niche of ultra-secure cell phones, like the Blackphone and the Turing Phone. Archos has partnered with SIKUR (read: Secure), a vendor of encrypted company-focused communications apps, to create the GranitePhone. It’s available to purchase today for a whopping $850.

The act of crossing a bridge is a terrifying experience, partly because of that creeping thought, “what if this thing just buckled under me right now?” For a group of French hikers, this possible nightmare became a reality


Crossing over a river in New Zealand, the hikers were caught halfway across a bridge when it collapsed and hurtled the hikers into the water below. Luckily, they came out of the fall without injuries and — in a silver lining moment — video footage of the whole incident.

As expected, Huawei has updated its Honor line with the announcement of the Honor Play 5X smartphone in China. The device is powered by a MediaTek MT6735 SoC with quad-core CPU, and sports a 5-inch HD display.


The handset has 2GB RAM and 16GB expandable internal memory, and packs in a massive 4,000mAh battery. In terms of camera, the Honor Play 5X features a 13MP rear unit and a 5MP front shooter. It runs Android 5.1 Lollipop-based EMUI 3.0.

Gionee F103L with 5-inch display and 1GB RAM receives TENAA certification

An entry-level smartphone from Gionee has received certification from TENAA. Dubbed F103L, the device is powered by a 1.3GHz CPU, and sports a 5.5-inch display with 1,280 x 720 pixels resolution.


The handset has 1GB RAM and 16GB internal memory (which can be further expanded up to 128GB via a microSD card), and packs in a 2400mAh battery. In terms of camera, the F103L features an 8MP rear unit and a 5MP front shooter.


The smartphone – which weighs in at 134 gms and sized at 143.0 × 70.3 × 7.9 (mm) – runs Android 5.0 Lollipop, and also features gravity, light and proximity sensors. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, GPS, TD-LTE, EDGE, and USB.


The TENAA listing came just a day after the Chinese company launched its Elife E8 flagship smartphone in the Indian market.

An entry-level handset from Chinese manufacturer Gionee, has been certified by TENAA. The latter, of course, is the regulatory agency in the country akin to the FCC in the U.S. The Gionee F103L is equipped with a 5-inch screen, carrying a 720 x 1280 resolution. That works out to a 294ppi pixel density. An unnamed quad-core 1.3GHz CPU is under the hood, and the phone has 1GB of RAM inside. More than a year after the beard of the famed King Tutankhamun burial mask was accidentally broken off and glued back on, the relic is set to be restored this week to its former glory


A German-Egyptian team will begin restoration Saturday to address the damage done to the 3,300-year-old mask in August 2014, when the beard became detached during maintenance to the exhibit and was reattached with epoxy glue, according to the Associated Press.

The incident was not publicly acknowledged by the Egyptian Museum of Cairo, where the mask is housed, until January, at which time officials said the glue could be removed and the mask repaired …
