The U.K.’s Information Commissioner’s Office has criticized the draft Investigatory Powers bill, currently before parliament, warning about the risks of requiring communications service providers to weaken encryption, and also asserting that no clear case has been made for why the state should require data on all its citizens to be retained for a full year. Did you know: the battery in this $100 phone is twice as large as the one in the iPhone 6s

When speaking about the phone market in general, one has to admit that – on one hand you have the Apple iPhone 6s – a device that has all the chances to become the fastest selling smartphone in the world (and if not, it most certainly will have the second or at the very worst third spots), and then, all the rest. We’re not talking about pure performance, cameras or specs here: we’re looking at things from a very practical sales volume perspective in the most profitable segment of high-end phones.

Verizon's Galaxy Note 4 is only now receiving the Android 5.1.1 update

Seemingly wanting to confirm that “better late than never” saying, Verizon has only now decided to release the Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for its version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

The flagship phablet from 2014 has actually been on the receiving end of this update ever since August of 2015, but that’s for internationally sold unlocked units. As always, if you buy yours from a carrier you can wait a lot more.

Case in point, here we are in January 2016, a few months after Google’s launched Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and Big Red is sending out Android 5.1.1 to the Note 4. Anyway, after applying the update you’ll be on software version LMY47X.N910VVRU2BOK3.

As this is an over-the-air rollout, it may be a few days before it reaches your phone and you get that update notification. If you’re impatient, you can manually check for the new software’s availability by using the dedicated menu inside Settings. This update adds things, but also removes others – namely, the Amazon Appstore and Amazon Widgets will be gone after the installation.

Octopus sticks to snorkeler’s arm, decides it’s not leaving

A small octopus has taken a page from The Little Mermaid and decided it wants to be part of our world. And it’s determined to get there.

Found during a snorkeling trip in the waters of Perth, Australia, the diver says he reached his arm into a cave and pulled it out with a new friend attached. The octopus latches itself on and sticks with the diver for awhile, almost making it to the surface.

The diver claims that each time he’d brush it off, it would just suck onto his other arm. Just goes to show that you can’t keep a good mollusk down.
