Kids who played shoot-em-up games in the ‘90s were probably (mostly) OK

(credit: Ingmar Zahorsky via Flickr)

The persistent suggestion that video gaming leads to violent behavior prompts innumerable eye-rolls and Internet rants from gamers. But it’s persistent because it’s surprisingly hard to nail down a solid answer to the question. A lot of the research just raises more questions, so consensus remains elusive, despite claims to the contrary.

A fair number of studies suggest that there is a link, but those can be contrasted with other research that says there isn’t. The problem is that there are so many different factors to take into account, along with a swiftly-changing medium and difficulty in obtaining high-quality data—we’d need an avalanche of research to answer the question definitively.

While it’s not an avalanche, a group of researchers, led by biological psychologist and video game violence skeptic Peter Etchells, has published an analysis suggesting that players of violent games might face a very small increase in risk for behavioral problems. They’re the kinds of small results that would be met with disappointment by authors who were hoping to find an effect, but they’re there. And yet, as always, this analysis isn’t the final word.

Is this the year the Super Bowl ads finally get women right?

Will this be the year that Super Bowl ads finally get women right?

The usual trope of unknown women in tiny bikinis has been scrapped in favor of powerful women like grand dame Helen Mirren, tennis superstar Serena Williams, soccer player Abby Wambach, and comedian Amy Schumer.

The brands oft-criticized for objectifying women will be far and few between: GoDaddy already announced it wouldn’t be advertising, and Carl Jr’s — unless it’s planning a surprise ad — will also likely be sitting it out.

Week 5 in review: iPhone 7 design and Galaxy S7 battery

Another week and it looks like the Samsung Galaxy S7 stole the show yet again. This is definitely justifiable after the Korean giant finally set an official date for the MWC announcement – February 21, fueling fan interest even further. A pair of new models – the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge made their way through FCC, proving that at least one flat and one edged variant will be available in the US. We also managed to catch a glimpse of what is said to be the back design of the handset, which will apparently be disrupted only by a 0.8mm camera hump, much smaller than the one on the S6.

Speaking of camera humps, Apple has apparently taken the outcry of its fans to heart, as reports claim that the iPhone 7 will have a flat back. And while we are on the topic of Apple, the Cupertino giant will offer a wave of March 15 announcements, prior to the new iPhone 7 in September. The event should see the unveiling of the iPad Air 3 and a new 4-inch phone – the iPhone 5se.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 has also been a major topic of conversation throughout the week. The latest wave of leaks showcased the device in a GFXBench listing and offered a glimpse of its glass back panel. Windows fans can also rejoice, as the Xiaomi flagship will apparently have a Windows 10 variant as well.

In other news, the LG G5 camera setup was revealed in detail thanks to a case leak. Also, the Microsoft Lumia 850 has been featured in a few leaks and so has the Lumia 650.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge+ not coming to the UK?

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ was a big phone, and it may have also been a big mistake. Or at least releasing it in the UK without offering the Note 5 anywhere in Europe was. That is, according to the latest rumor.

A “Techradar source high up” mentions the Korean giant has learnt from its mistakes and they are making things up with the coming flagships. The insider states the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge+ will not be coming to the UK after an onslaught of complaints from Galaxy Note 5 fans.

“Samsung isn’t going to launch the S7 Edge+ in the UK. I got the impression that it had been a bit of a disappointment sales-wise and that the decision to keep the Note 5 out of Europe is now considered a mistake. So our information is that the Note 6 will launch in the UK in August and that there will be no S7 Edge+.”

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 review

I still don’t understand why Samsung wouldn’t just release both handsets in these specific markets, but the S7 series continues to be a mystery by now. We can all guess, but the truth is no one knows what Samsung is about to do. It’s possible they just won’t release the S7 Edge+ in the UK, just as it’s possible they won’t release it at all. And that makes a bit of sense; large screen fans do already have the Galaxy Note series around.

Maybe Samsung could just position this phone differently, but all we can do is wait until the truth emerges. Mobile World Congress is just around the corner, and we expect to learn more details there. Meanwhile, we will keep our eyes and ears open… and our fingers typing. Be sure we will get you all the latest rumors and news, so stay tuned.

But tell us, guys. Do you think there is a need for another large handset in the Galaxy S series? Do you think the Note smartphones are enough? Hit the comments to let us know!

A Look Inside How ESPN Gets Ready For Super Bowl 50

Before it’s made apparent by my remarks, I don’t know jack shit about football. I can watch a game with a Bud Light in hand and unassumingly make my way through a plate of snacks and know when the right time to yell at the ref or give a high five is, but eh it’s not my thing. What I was really interested when I rolled into ESPN’s Marina Green mobile studio in San… Read More

The OnePlus X and the Honor Huawei 5X have a lot in common: relatively low prices, slick case designs, and far-reaching marketing campaigns. And now both of them can be loaded with the fan-favorite Team Win Recovery Project, a custom Android recovery that makes loading custom ROMs and other modifications easy. Users can download the recovery images at the official TWRP site, here and here.

The Android community (or at least that part of it that uses custom recoveries) tends to gravitate around certain models, if only because there are so many these days that it’s impossible to support every one with every ROM.
