Vine lives on as Vine Camera

Twitter seemingly pulled the plug on Vine back in October, then rumor had it the company was in talks to sell the service. Well, no, and no, apparently.

In a blog post Twitter has announced that come January it will be transforming Vine into Vine Camera. This new app will allow you to record 6-second clips and share them on Twitter, or just save them on your phone for later viewing.

Meanwhile, following an update of the current app, you can now download all your existing vines. You can also do so from the vine.co website, where everything is otherwise business as usual.

Google Search is testing new Recent tab, Offline and Lite search modes

Google is on a testing spree with server-side changes in the main Search app. Based on feedback from several readers, it looks like there might be changes afoot to the side menu, introducing a new feature and improving on ones we’ve seen before but that haven’t been widely implemented yet.

Recent search tab

Whenever you perform a search within the Google app or widget, you have a couple of ways to access it again: you either remember the exact words you used and try the same search, or you access your Google activity dashboard, or you use the trick of tapping the Google icon to open a consequent search as a separate page to leave the previous one lurking.

Nougat update confirmed for Xiaomi's Mi Note, Mi 4c, Mi 4s, and Mi Max smartphones

After rolling out the Nougat update to its Mi 5 smartphone last week. Xiaomi has now confirmed some more of its phones that’ll get the update. The confirmation came in the form of a Weibo post from a company representative.

The list includes the Mi 4c, Mi 4s, Mi Note, and Mi Max. There’s currently no information on exactly when the update will be rolled out, although reports say that might happen sometime in the first quarter of 2017. Other Xiaomi devices that’ll get the update include the Mi 5s, Mi Note 2, Mi Mix.

Mysterious BlackBerry BBC100-1 spotted on regulator's website

A mysterious BlackBerry device has been spotted on Indonesian regulator’s website. Listed as BBC100-1 on the Asian country’s e-Certification database POSTEL, the device comes from a company called BB MERAH PUTIH, PT.

Given that the DTEK60 is BBA100-1, and the yet-to-be-unveiled ‘Mercury’ is BBB100-1, it’d be reasonable to assume that the BBC100-1 is a brand new BlackBerry phone. Sadly, there’s currently no more information available on the phone, including whether or not it’ll be available outside of Indonesia.

Evernote backtracks, says won't read users' notes unless they opt-in

Shortly after announcing an update to its privacy policy that would have compromised the privacy of user data, Evernote has backtracked on its plans.

“After receiving a lot of customer feedback expressing concerns about our upcoming Privacy Policy changes over the past few days, Evernote is reaffirming its commitment to keep privacy at the center of what we do,” the company said in a blog post.

“As a result, we will not implement the previously announced Privacy Policy changes that were scheduled to go into effect January 23, 2017.”

Can Facebook fix its fake news problem?

Facebook’s finally coming around to its fake news problem. The world’s largest social network rolled out a tool to help curb all the fake news circulating on its platform.

Mashable Tech Editor Pete Pachal and Chief Correspondent Lance Ulanoff and I discussed whether it’s too little too late on this week’s MashTalk.

SEE ALSO: Netflix now lets you download and chill and it’s awesome

The tool, as my colleague Karissa Bell wrote, is basically the equivalent of reporting spam and other objectionable content.

It’s debatable whether down-ranking fake news will really do anything in the long run to restore users’ faith in Facebook as a source to get news. Perhaps, Facebook needs to bring back human curators to become the gatekeepers of newsworthy news. …

Google's NYC pop-up store is giving away ugly phone sweaters and Pixels

Ugly holiday sweaters have had a renaissance recently for … odd reasons (mostly comedy or irony) and Google apparently feels that smartphones have been left out in the cold for too long, so it has taken it upon itself to bring ugly sweaters to the smartphone crowd, at least in a small way and only for those in the New York City area.
Starting tomorrow, December 17th, through December 23rd the NYC Made by Google pop-up store is running a promotion that sounds pretty cool. If you visit the store any one of those days between noon and 6pm, Google says “you’ll have the opportunity … – Source

Vainglory gets an update out in time for the holidays, adding a new hero to the mix

All the goodies included in Vainglory 2.0 Update.

Fans of Vainglory received an early present from the developers at Super Evil Megacorp (gotta love that company name) in the form of a huge update that adds many features the hardcore players have been requesting. It also adds a new hero, a new Mystery Chest for unlocking new goodies, along with updates to the some festive skins.

Let’s start with the new hero, Idris, an Assassin class hero with a well-rounded set of attacks. Build up his melee attacks with his lightsaber-esque staff for strong combat up close, or sit back and rely on his ranged attacks. On top of all that, just check out how cool he looks!

Another big addition is the Mystery Chest. It features every hero and skin in the market, with a better than one-in-three chance of receiving a new hero or skin as well as a shot at hitting a million Opal jackpot.

In terms of more substantial updates to the game itself, the update implements improvements to Guilds including a better system for finding and joining Guilds for beginners, as well as administrative updates and better rewards for both solo and team efforts.

And then there’s the added festive fun in the form of new winter-themed skins for some Heroes along with a revamped winter season map. For full details, check out the video from Vainglory’s YouTube channel above.

RASA NLU gives developers an open source solution for natural language processing

For better or worse, 2016 was another year of bots. I probably got more pitches for bot startups than anything else. And yet, bots are far from hitting their stride. If we hope to break beyond the rigid functionality of today’s tools, a prerequisite is going to be giving bot developers a bit more open source love.
