PSA: Xbox One Kinect bundle drops to $400 w/ three games

When Microsoft announced a new Xbox One bundle with a Kinect camera earlier this month, that package came in at a surprisingly high $500 price. That was the same price the console/camera combo launched at nearly two years ago (though the new bundle does throw in three Kinect-powered games: Dance Central Spotlight, Kinect Sports Rivals and Zoo Tycoon). In any case, the Kinect no longer costs quite as much. That same bundle has now been lowered to $400, just $50 more than the standalone Xbox One system. In addition, those who want to purchase a Kinect on its own after the fact can now get one for $100, down from $150.

US sales for the Xbox One immediately doubled month-to-month when Microsoft unbundled Kinect from the standard package, suggesting there isn’t an overly large market for the 3D camera and directional microphone array. This latest price drop could be seen as more evidence that Microsoft is having trouble moving as much Kinect hardware as it wants at current prices (while the price drop is officially a “limited time promotional offer,” the Xbox One price cut to $350 was also temporary before it became permanent).

Then again, this price cut could just be the result of the usual cost reductions that apply to most technology as it ages. Perhaps Microsoft is trying to get more Kinect hardware into homes before the rollout of additional, Cortana-style voice commands in the Xbox One’s New User Experience next month.

Every once in a while we tend to use our smartphones for all the wrong reasons. We visit certain cat websites, or other popular hubs, and we want this to stay a secret.
We all need a clear browser historyHowever, if you’ve got that brand new Apple iPhone 6s that everyone is talking about, you’re bound to have friends and acquaintances ask you to give it a spin and – of course – they inevitably head to that most secretive of places that is your browser.

We make no apologies for our love of the concept car at Ars Technica, and this year’s Tokyo auto show has just delivered another fix. Home turf for companies like Mazda, Toyota, and Yamaha means they usually push the boat (or in this case the car) out with something special, and 2015 is no exception.

First up is Mazda’s RX-Vision, which announces to the world that the company has not given up on the rotary engine. The RX-Vision is a front-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car that has RX-7 fans salivating at the prospect of a replacement for the iconic car. Although Mazda says it has no plan to put the car into production, we wouldn’t be surprised if a groundswell of popular opinion eventually changed its mind.

Turkish journalists arrested in chaotic media crackdown

At dawn on Wednesday, police in Istanbul raided the headquarters of a media company linked to a U.S.-based government critic. Police used batons, a water cannon and tear gas. Images on social media appeared to show cops dragging away handcuffed journalists from Kanalturk and Bugun TV

Koza-Ipek Holding, which owns the media outlets, has ties to a movement led by Fethullah Gulen, a moderate Islamic cleric based in the U.S. The government accuses the movement of trying to destabilize the state, and prosecutors have labeled it a terrorist organization. Wednesday’s seizure is part of a wider crackdown on opposition media, which international watchdogs have called a crisis for the free press. …

Metal-clad Redmi Note 2 Pro certified in China, along with more upcoming Xiaomi gear

Meizu might have released its metal version of the M2 Note, aptly-named Blue Charm Metal, and LeTV its aluminum-clad Le 1s yesterday, but Xiaomi isn’t resting on the Redmi Note 2 laurels either, and is seemingly prepping a metal version of its popular midranger.
Tentatively dubbed Redmi Note 2 Pro, the phone has appeared in a certification body database in China, along with some other Xiaomi-made gear, like a handheld blender (yep, Xiaomi is a pretty diverse maker of stuff). Xiaomi’s metallic handset already leaked out in the alleged picture that you see … – Source

Let there be light - here are 2015's smartphones with the brightest displays

You certainly know the pain of having to use your smartphone in bright daylight. There’s hardly a display that can easily cope with these harsh conditions in a perfect fashion. After all, it’s impossible to wage a brightness war on a celestial body that has a mass 330,000 times that of the Earth.
Still, this doesn’t mean that the smartphone scene brings a toothpick to the gunfight. There’s only so much a display can achieve in the brightness department, but there already exist many devices that perform decently and make it quite easy for the user to interact with the display.

Comcast talks about starting an MVNO using Verizon's network

Cable giant Comcast could be ready to start an MVNO powered by the Verizon network. During Comcast’s third quarter earnings call on Tuesday, CEO Brian Roberts said that his company would start a trial and test out a wireless service after a six-month waiting period expires. The waiting period apparently started the moment that Comcast decided to invoke a three-year agreement it had with Verizon, to use Big Red’s pipeline for an MVNO.

Comcast owns 11 million Wi-Fi hotpots that it can use to help start a hybrid service that will offer both voice and data over Wi-Fi. When out of the range of … – Source
