US regulators grant DMCA exemption legalizing vehicle software tinkering

(credit: Jerk Alert Productions)

Every three years, the Librarian of Congress issues new rules on Digital Millennium Copyright Act exemptions. Acting Librarian David Mao, in an order (PDF) released Thursday, authorized the public to tinker with software in vehicles for “good faith security research” and for “lawful modification.”

The decision comes in the wake of the Volkswagen scandal, in which the German automaker baked bogus code into its software that enabled the automaker’s diesel vehicles to reduce pollutants below acceptable levels during emissions tests.

“I am glad they granted these exemptions,” Sherwin Siy, said vice president for legal affairs for Public Knowledge in Washington, DC. “I am not glad it was necessary for them to do so in the first place.”

Streaming services lead LGBT representation on TV, reports GLAAD

“20 years ago, GLAAD began tracking the number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) characters on television, and at the time, you could count them on one hand.”

That’s how GLAAD C.E.O. Sarah Kate Ellis introduces this year’s GLAAD “Where We Are on TV” report. The latest report, now in its 20th year, confirms that the television landscape is changing — slowly, perhaps, but surely.

Siri requires Apple Music subscription to answer music-related questions

Many Apple Music subscribers, one of which is Pandora’s co-creator Tom Conrad, have noticed that Siri isn’t too keen on answering some questions unless a subscription to Apple Music is present. For example, searching for most popular songs in any location or a time period isn’t an option for non Apple Music users.

Instead of displaying an alternative web search result, Siri right out says that she’s not able to perform the look up.

Sorry, I can’t look up the music charts for you. You don’t seem to be subscribed to Apple Music.

HTC RE now for only $50 from $199

The HTC RE didn’t exactly set sales charts on fire, which probably doesn’t come as a surprise considering its rather niche nature.

Now, HTC is offering a rather hefty discount on the little camera, bringing the price down to $50. If you ever considered purchasing one then this should be a good enough reason for you to make the jump. But if it didn’t quite convince you the first time around, it’s unlikely to change your mind now.

In case you aren’t aware, the RE is a compact camera from HTC. It has no display and not much of an interface. You interact with the couple of buttons on the device, one of them being the large shutter button on top. The RE is meant for spontaneous shots and not really for those who like to compose and setup their shots before capturing. The camera pairs with your phone to transfer images and you can use your phone as a viewfinder at a pinch but it would just be easier to shoot with your phone, not to mention the RE image quality isn’t exactly great. If all of that seems good to you somehow, then it’s available at the lowest price so…
