Weekend Box Office: 'Ex Machina' Nabs $250K, 'Longest Ride' Lassos $13.5M

I’ll get to The Longest Ride in a moment, but the more interesting action was in realm of limited debuts. One of the best films of the year debuted this weekend courtesy of A24, as Alex Garland’s artificial intelligence thriller Ex Machina debuted in four theaters. The Domhnall Gleeson/Oscar Isaac/Alicia Vikander sci-fi gem earned $249,956 over its debut weekend for a whopping $62,489 per-screen-average. A24 will expand this one towards a somewhat wide release on April 24th, so how about you all actually go see it instead of ignoring it and then complaining that Hollywood doesn’t release any good original films anymore? Speaking of which, It Follows earned $2.03m on 1,655 screens this weekend, for a $1,241 per-screen-average and a $11.798m domestic cume. It’s nearing 3x its opening weekend number, although it will probably start shedding screens next weekend. The fact that the last two weekends have had only one new wide release has been a gift in terms of keeping screens. Next weekend had five 500+ screen debuts, so that’s that. I still think it’s a tragedy that a $15m total will be seen as a win for this one, but that’s a problem I don’t have the answer to. - Source
