BlackBerry shares soar 5% after reporting Q2 2017 earnings and the end of hardware manufacturing

Wall Street got some of the news it was expecting from BlackBerry today. Last week, we passed along a report from investment blog The Motley Fool, which correctly predicted that the manufacturer would close its hardware division on September 28th. Leaving hardware to others was good enough news to send BlackBerry’s shares soaring nearly 5% this morning to $8.36.

BlackBerry also reported its second quarter earnings and you can see why it is dropping hardware manufacturing. GAAP software and services revenue reached $334 million for the three month period, rising a strong 89% year-over-year. … – Source

Apple to send security update to strengthen iOS 10's weak backup encryption

It turns out that the local encrypted backups on iOS 10, the ones that are created in iTunes, are not as secure as they should be. According to researchers at Moscow based software developer Elcomsoft, iOS 10 uses an older password protection algorithm. The Russian software firm was working on an iOS 10 update to its password cracking PhoneBreaker software, when it discovered that Apple uses a different password verification system for iOS 10 that skips certain security checks. That allows a hacker to try out passwords 2,500 times faster compared to the old system used on iOS 9. This type … – Source

Google’s new instant messaging client Allo doesn’t seem like a compelling product. Allo is missing many of the basic features you might expect in an instant messaging app: it only works with one device at a time, it doesn’t work on a desktop or laptop computer, it doesn’t support tablets very well, it doesn’t use a Google account, and it doesn’t support SMS. Allo has had a curiously incomplete product launch, and many Google users are left wondering what the company was thinking.

Allo’s limitations are deal breakers for many people in the hyper-connected developed world, but what if you’re not in a developed country? Google hasn’t explicitly come out and said so, but Allo’s features and Google’s actions around the launch of Allo all point to it being targeted at developing countries, and one developing country in particular: India.
