New images surface of the LeEco Le 2S, reportedly carrying 8GB of RAM and the Snapdragon 821 chipset

A pair of images said to be photos of the LeEco Le 2S were discovered on Weibo today. What makes this such an interesting handset is the speculation that this phone will be the first to carry 8GB of RAM. This unit could be a multi-tasking boss as long as this feature hasn’t be throttled to save on battery life. Additionally, speculation has the Snapdragon 821 chipset under the hood. This means that the phone will have a quad-core CPU running as much as 10% faster than the Snapdragon 820. The Adreno 530 GPU will crunch graphics. The LeEco Le 2S will feature 64GB of internal storage.

Windows 10 Allows File Names Longer Than 260 Characters (With a Registry Hack)

Ever since Windows 95, Microsoft has only allowed file names up to 260 characters (which, to be fair, was much nicer than the 8 character limit previously). Now, with a registry tweak, you can exceed that amount in Windows 10.

Measuring viscosity with tiny golden antennas

(credit: Universal Images Group / Getty Images)

I was kind of shocked and amazed by a recent publication in NanoLetters. It seems that viscosity measurements are still difficult. In my ignorance, I had assumed that this was a solved problem. And, just to show the depths of my ignorance, it turns out that you can learn something about a person’s health by measuring the viscosity of their blood. This process is time consuming, as I’ll explain in a moment. Now, thanks to the power of our ability to build little gold-iron alloy helices, these measurements just got a whole lot easier.

Stick around and I’ll tell you about viscosity

Viscosity is a measure of how well things flow. So, for instance, water flows quite easily and rapidly, while some oils flow more slowly—we say that oil is more viscous than water. The study of fluid flow is a very complicated business so, to simplify the problem, you have to ask yourself what is important. For instance, water flowing down a river is probably dominated by the sheer mass of moving fluid. That means you can probably ignore any influence of viscosity and just worry about mass.

On the other hand, when blood reaches the extremities of the body, it is flowing in very fine channels. There is not a lot of mass to the fluid, but the viscous forces between the channel wall and the fluid are enormous. Here, it might be appropriate to ignore anything to do with mass and focus on viscosity. By examining relationships like this, you can build reasonably accurate models of fluid flows without enduring the pain of the full complexity of fluid dynamics equations. But you can only choose what to include in your models if you know the viscosity reasonably accurately.

The Baltimore Ravens stopped their game to watch Michael Phelps swim

On Thursday night, the NFL preseason (finally) began and one of the games featured the Baltimore Ravens hosting the Carolina Panthers.

Baltimore is also the home of Olympic champion Michael Phelps and, knowing he had a race tonight, the teams planned to show his race on the jumbotron. So, in the fourth quarter of the game, the two teams paused just long enough to watch Phelps swim, albeit on a slight delay.

Of course, we know how that race turned out: Phelps won handily, no matter what the CBC announcers said.

Fans at M&T Bank Stadium had no problems picking him out and gave what was probably the loudest cheer they’d give all night as Phelps brought home gold. …

Galaxy Note7 release gets delayed in Russia and Ukraine because of how successful it is elsewhere

The Samsung Galaxy Note7 seems to have become a victim of its own success, in some places at least. Thus, delays are to be expected, in at least a couple of markets.

The Note7 was supposed to go on pre-order in Ukraine on August 16, with the release planned for September 2, just like everywhere else in Europe. That timeline has been changed, however. The new information is that pre-orders will start on September 7, with the device becoming available on September 30. That’s quite the delay, almost one full month.

It apparently has to do with the “unprecedented demand for the…
