Why it’s doubtful that 32 million Twitter passwords are really circulating online

(credit: Matthew Keys)

The jury is still out, but at this early stage, there’s good reason to doubt the legitimacy of claims that more than 32 million Twitter passwords are circulating online.

The purported dump went live on Wednesday night on LeakedSource, a site that bills itself as a breach notification service. The post claimed that the 32.88 million Twitter credentials contain plaintext passwords and that of the 15 records LeakedSource members checked, all 15 were found to be valid. Twitter Trust and Info Security Officer Michael Coates has said his team investigated the list, and he remains “confident that our systems have not been breached.”

Lending credibility to Coates’s claim, Twitter has long used the bcrypt hash function to store hashes. Bcrypt hashes are so slow and computationally costly to crack that it would have required infeasible amounts of time and effort for anyone to decipher the underlying plaintext. As of press time, there were no reports of a mass reset of Twitter users’ passwords, either.

Lenovo Moto Z: rumor round-up

The Moto Z flagship will be unveiled in just a few hours on the stage of the Lenovo Tech World event, so it’s last call for rumors. Here’s a quick summary of everything we’ve seen so far.

First off, obviously, it’s Moto Z, the Moto X name has reportedly been retired (at the same time Sony switched from Z to X, weird, huh?).

The defining feature of the Moto Z will be its modular design, using MotoMods modules. Unlike Project Ara (which originated at Motorola, but stayed at Google), you only get one module that covers the entire back (with a cutout for the camera). Unlike the LG G5,…

Legit OnePlus 3 camera samples show up on Twitter

OnePlus has been awfully quiet about its third “flagship killer”. They have been known for hyping their devices to no end, periodically giving us bits and pieces of what the next handset will feature. But all we really know about the OnePlus 3 is that it will be launched on June 14th, will be available for purchase at launch and that “it feels good to hold“. The rest are rumors.

But of course, OnePlus couldn’t stay quiet until next week’s announcement. They have taken it to Twitter to show us what the OnePlus 3 camera will be able to accomplish. Let’s take a look at the images!

These are pretty good photos considering OnePlus has never been a stellar competitor in the camera department. Their phones usually create fairly good pictures, but nothing close to the best smartphone cameras around.

OnePlus 3: 5 things we want to seeYou can buy a OnePlus 3 on June 15 at global pop-up shopsOh, hi there, OnePlus 3!

Rumors say the OnePlus 3 will have a 16 MP main camera, but that didn’t really tell us much. These photos at least show us things seem to be improving, which is one of the things we were hoping for. Shots are crisp and there is no sign of blur or weird elements. The one at the beach even shows what seems like a bokeh effect, which is something you only get with some lenses with wide apertures.

The photos look good, but we would wait to pass judgement. We don’t know who took them, what kind of settings were used, how many times the photos had to be taken to get the best shot, or whether the image was edited or not.

We will have to wait until we get our hands on the phone to really tell what kind of quality we are getting. For now, just give these images a look and hit the comments to let us know what you think of them.

That horrible moment when Richard Branson catches you sleeping at work

If you thought you were having a bad day, let’s put things in perspective.

One poor guy is currently freaking out because his boss caught him sleeping on the job. That boss? None other than Virgin founder Richard Branson, who found him taking a nap on the couch at exactly the wrong moment in time.

Branson even posed for a photo with the unnamed Virgin Australia employee, an image that should fill any worker’s stomach with dread.

Dual SIM Samsung Galaxy S7 going for $529 on eBay

A new deal awaits anyone who is looking specifically for a dual SIM variant of the Galaxy S7. eBay seller 9tronix is selling the aforementioned handset for $529. The only color available, though, is Gold.

To be clear, this is for an International dual SIM version of the Galaxy S7 with 32GB of internal storage. Remember the International versions of the Galaxy S7 are fitted with Samsung’s own Exynos processors instead of the North American variants which all chug along a Snapdragon 820 CPU. The phone carries the model number SM-G930FD.

LeEco Le Max 2 review: L'etranger

To get the disclaimers out of the way, this is obviously not coming straight from Beijing’s Latin Quarter. Although a certain penchant for all things French is not entirely incredible, you can bet LeEco has a keener eye on neighboring India – probably its biggest potential source of revenue after the home market.

Apple’s Phil Schiller on speeding up App Review, app subscriptions, and more

Enlarge / Apple is bringing search ads and other major changes to the App Store over the next few months. (credit: Apple)

We’re a few days out from the WWDC keynote, but Apple is already making some announcements. Apple SVP of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller was put in charge of the App Store back in December, and today he sat down with The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple to detail his first major changes to the App Store.

The single biggest difference is a change to Apple’s traditional 70-30 revenue split for in-app subscriptions. Under the new system, 70 percent of revenue will still go to the developer and 30 percent will still go to Apple, but after users have been subscribed for over a year, the split changes to 85-15 in the developer’s favor. This change will apply to all current subscription-based apps as well, so if you’ve already subscribed to Netflix or Spotify, those companies will start getting a larger share of the money soon.

The 70-30 split remains unchanged for other kinds of apps. For holdouts like Amazon that still don’t offer subscriptions through their apps (or any apps at all for the Apple TV), the revenue tweaks may convince them to reconsider their positions.
