Why the new Mercedes-AMG GT R is the David Hasselhoff of sports cars

The nickname of the Nissan GT-R is “Godzilla.” Now that Mercedes has its own GT R, this begs the question: What — or who — is the German equivalent of Godzilla? I reckon it’s David Hasselhoff. Accordingly, I say we nickname this Teutonic GT R the “Hoff.”

You’re welcome, Mercedes.

For those of you unaware of the new Mercedes nomenclature, the GT R’s “Mercedes” brand moniker is followed by “-AMG” instead of “-Benz” because it was created by the brand’s performance arm, AMG. Standard Mercedes get the “-Benz” suffix, while the sportiest of models are branded “AMG.” Make sense? …

With iOS 10, you will no longer slide-to-unlock your iPhone

One of the tenets of the iPhone and iPad user experience is going away with iOS 10: the trademarked ‘slide-to-unlock’ action that will remain in history as one of the most memorable features of the original iPhone and many iOS devices that followed, is now being replaced by a very different ‘Press Home to unlock’.
And this will infuriate quite a few users. Here is why: while earlier (before iOS 10), you could simply tap on the Home key to unlock the phone without the need to press / click the button, you now need to first tap to unlock the phone and then press / click the Home … – Source

And Brexit for all: Samsung may leave its London headquarters

Well, the “Brexit” vote came and went, and if the will of the people that voted for England to leave the EU is indeed taken into account by the parliament, we may see a genuine commotion in the business world. Not only is the London stock exchange in free fall, and the pound losing value by the hour, but on top of all this major companies are considering relocating their businesses and headquarters away from the British island.
One of those companies is none other than Samsung, reports Korean media today, as it is considering to move its London offices somewhere on the European … – Source

Study: gawking at your phone in bed can lead to 'transient smartphone blindness'

When two women with the same weird temporary vision impairment case came to visit a renowned ophthalmologist as a last resort, he simply asked them “What exactly were you doing when this happened?” The women, 22 and 40, complained of numerous transient monocular vision loss incidents in the past few months. Still, their “ophthalmic and cardiovascular examinations were normal. Vitamin A levels and the results of magnetic resonance angiography, echocardiography, and a thrombophilia screening were also normal,” says the study.
This presented somewhat of a conundrum … – Source

YouTube's mobile app now includes live streaming capabilities

YouTube reminded everyone today that the Google-owned video streamer was hosting live streaming back in the days when a live stream was some place loaded with fish for the angler. The whole process is a snap to set up. Once on YouTube, you will see a red capture button in the corner of the screen. Click on it. Take a picture, or select a previously snapped image as a thumbnail, and you will be broadcasting … – Source

Sony Xperia Marshmallow update beta includes 'soft charging' allowing the battery to live longer

The Sony Xperia Z2, Sony Xperia Z3 and Sony Xperia Z3 Compact are getting updated with a beta version of the Marshmallow update with software version 23.5.A.1.238. This includes a feature called Charging optimization better known as “soft charging.” With this feature enabled, the battery charges up to less than 100% when you plug in.

Studies have found that you can increase the number of years that a battery can hold its charge, by not letting it fully recover to 100% each time you plug in. Of course, the caveat is that you will never get to experience the full life of your battery on a … – Source

John Green at VidCon: 'Growth has not always been good news'

ANAHEIM, California — Fault in Our Stars author John Green and his brother Hank found a huge following on YouTube with their channel Vlogbrothers.

Now, at the seventh annual VidCon — the biggest conference to date — the two men seemed torn over what that growth has meant for their audience, and the Internet community as a whole.

“We’ve all heard the business maxim that if you aren’t growing, you’re dying,” John Green said in his keynote Thursday. “But for my career and with our audience, growth has not always been good news.”

It was an odd theme to hit on, considering the success of VidCon seemingly correlates with the growing popularity of digital influencers. …

Sense Home 8 launcher will be available to non-HTC devices, closed beta invites reveal

Over the past year or so, HTC has been ‘uncoupling’ many of the apps it builds into its Android releases, putting them on the Google Play Store. This means the company can update apps faster, without needing to bundle those updates into a new firmware release. It also obviously provides the option of making some of those apps available to non-HTC devices.

That’s exactly what is going to happen with the Sense Home 8 launcher, the newest iteration of the company’s customized home screen. This shipped on the HTC 10, but now it looks like HTC wants to put it in the Play Store and allow owners…

Verizon starts updating the Nokia Lumia Icon to Windows 10 Mobile

Great news for owners of Verizon’s Nokia Lumia Icon. After having carefully considered whether to roll out Windows 10 Mobile to this model (something we told you about in March), Microsoft has in fact decided to grace the Icon with the latest version of its mobile operating system.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the update to Windows 10 Mobile for the Lumia Icon should be on its way starting today, according to Verizon. As always in these cases, the rollout occurs over-the-air, so at some point you’ll get an update notification and you go from there. But since the update is going out in…
