Oculus Rift: You've got questions, we've got answers

When Oculus Rift pre-orders went live Wednesday, plenty of people were scrambling to get their hands on a piece of virtual reality. While many have said 2016 will be VR’s big year, it doesn’t mean the technology is going to be in every household.

There are plenty of people who may not know as much about what the Oculus Rift is, why people are so excited for it, or even if they should take the plunge on VR yet. Below, we’re taking on the biggest questions you may be afraid to ask.

What is virtual reality?

Virtual reality’s current form uses images projected on a screen about five inches from a wearer’s face to show them a new experience. Using lenses and stereoscopic 3D (which involves showing a slightly different image to each eye), the brain can be tricked into feeling like what it’s seeing is really real …

Nokia 230 24K-gold-plating costs more than the phone, still worth it

We understand the urge to have your flagship LG V10 gold-plated, and the gold bath adds an extra bit of flair to curved-body Samsung high-end models Galaxy S6 edge and Note5. But what about that Nokia 230 that you keep in your car’s glove box for backup, or use as a secondary phone for basic needs?

Now Vietnamese specialists in the field of luxury customization Karalux can have the 230 gold-plated in 24K yellow gold too, to match your smartphone attire. We’re only assuming that once you’re looking into gold-plating, you have a smartphone to boot, but even if the unassuming Nokia feature phone is your primary means of communication, at VND 1,500,000 ($67) the treatment is still a bargain.

That’s the price if you bring in your own Nokia 230, but for VND 2,800,000 ($125) the company will happily pull a ready gold-plated one off its store shelves. So in effect, the gold-plating costs more than the phone itself. But who’s to say that you can’t have some bling just because you refuse to be bothered with constant notifications and want a battery life longer than a day….

Microsoft Lumia 650 clears the FCC hurdle

Just a few days ago, some documents confirmed that the Microsoft Lumia 650 will come in both single- as well as dual-SIM variants, carrying model number RM-1152 and RM-1154, respectively.

Now, the single SIM variant – the RM-1152 – has been certified by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States, suggesting it could soon be launched there.

Recently, a live image (shown below) of the Windows 10 smartphone leaked, showing the phone at an angle, and confirming that its outer frame is made of metal.

As for the specs, from what all has been rumored until now, the Lumia 550 is powered by a Snapdragon 210 SoC and sports a 5-inch 720p display. RAM is 1GB, while the device packs in a 2,000mAh battery.

CES 2016 brought consumer tech back to who it belongs: The consumer

LAS VEGAS — Probably the biggest surprise of CES 2016 was the return of vinyl.

Both Sony and Panasonic announced new turntables, and not just for nostalgia’s sake. After a limited release this summer, Panasonic’s Technics SL-1200 will enter the company’s official product lineup, and Sony’s PS-HX500 will convert vinyl to high-res digital audio files.

The return of vinyl is, in my mind, the best example of why CES 2016 was one of the best shows in years: a renewed willingness to meet consumers where they are. Vinyl never went away, of course, but its popularity has climbed considerably in the past few years, and not just from wistful old folks who attend Phish concerts. …

Project Greenlight Digital Studios' first winner is Miami web series '#Josh'

LOS ANGELES — Project Greenlight Digital Studios has chosen its first contest winner in #Josh, a Miami-set dramedy from Joshua Jean-Baptiste and Edson Jean, who will get $25,000 and a development deal to shoot the new studio’s maiden web series.

The show follows Josh, a young, “digitally dependent” Haitian-American who has to live with his “promiscuous, problematic” cousin in inner-city Miami. Jean-Baptiste and Jean, both New World School of the Arts graduates, say they’ve written 16 webisodes that will revolve around social media, which they’ll use motion graphics to illustrate.

Fitbit is being sued for measuring your heart rate incorrectly

Fitbit, a leading name is the wearable fitness tracker market, has been delivered a class action lawsuit from three people on the grounds that the company’s PurePulse Trackers do not accurately monitor heart rates as advertised.

The plaintiffs, Kate McLellan, Teresa Black and David Urban, each argue that the readings on their Fitbit devices were off. Black alleges in the lawsuit that in one instance, her personal trainer manually recorded her heart rate at 160bpm, while her Charge HR device had her heart rate at only 82bpm.
