Veteran actor Bob Christo passes away

Bob ChristoIt's been a sad week for Bollywood, as two veteran actors have set for heavenly abode. While Navin Nischol passed away last week, Bob Christo (70) passed away in Bangalore on Sunday afternoon. He was hospitalized after a massive heart attack on Saturday afternoon. After having debuted with Abdullah, Bob went onto create and carve a niche place for himself in Bollywood; most of his roles were that of a villain's henchman and evil British officer in period films. Not many know that this man was a qualified civil engineer. The actor of Australian origin went on to act in over 200 movies, which included films like Mard, Qurbani, Mr. India, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and Gumraah, to name a few. Ironically, the actor's biography titled 'Flashback: My Times in Bollywood and Beyond' was to be released by Akshay Kumar in June. Bollywood Hungama prays for the departed man's soul to rest in eternal peace.

Madhuri returns back to US; might do the next season of dance reality show

Madhuri DixitGetting the divine Madhuri Dixit to sign on the dotted line just got costlier. After the stupendous response to her presence on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, Madhuri was a pre-given for the next season. Sure enough the channel offered Madhuri another season of Jhalak and she apparently showed a keen interest in returning to the show.
But now it appears, in order to get her back, the channel would have to considerably upgrade her already-impressive, if not astronomical, fee. Apparently, Madhuri's fee is larger than any offered to any reality-show judge on Indian television. Says a co-star who has worked closely with Madhuri, "And why not? She brought so much to the table when she came on-board. Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa went to another level with Madhuri." While channel sources are tight-lipped about the serious re-negotiation, Madhuri who returned to the US last week, is candid enough to admit that another season of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa is being worked out. Says Madhuri, "We're under negotiation. Nothing has been finalized as yet. Let's see...I really enjoyed my first stint on the show. I am not discounting a second season." For now Madhuri has returned back to the US. "I don't know when I'll be back. This has been my longest stay in Mumbai away from my husband and kids. Though my sons joined me in Mumbai during Christmas, I still felt the distance. At the moment I can't think of anything but going back to the people who matter the most to me." Madhuri hasn't signed any film. "I met directors and heard scripts. But nothing that would tear me away from my children." Madhuri is overwhelmed by the response she got during this trip to Mumbai. "I've to admit this was a very special visit to Mumbai. I felt extremely welcome. But right now I can't say when I'm coming back." The channel hosting Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa would have an answer to whether Madhuri returns to Mumbai in the near future.

James Cameron visits Priyan's Malayalam film set in Abu Dhabi

James Cameron, PriyadarshanThe Titanic-Avatar's director James Cameron is planning a film based in India. In Abu Dhabi earlier this week, for a media summit, Cameron suddenly landed up on location to watch Priyadarshan shoot a Malayalam film with Mohanlal. Cameron spent a good two hours with Priyan and his leading man. "He didn't know anyone from the Indian film industry except Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He didn't know me or my work. But had an insatiable curiosity about what I was doing and where I came from. He is going to watch my Kanchivaram," says Priyadarshan proudly. When James Cameron suddenly dropped in on location at Abu Dhabi to meet Priyadarshan, the Avatar director only knew he was going to meet a prolific South Indian filmmaker. When Cameron heard Priyadarshan's output he was shocked. Cameron, who has directed barely 32 films in 33 years of his career, thought he had heard wrongly. And considering Priyan's thick accent, it'd be easy for a Canadian to misunderstand. Speaking from Abu Dhabi, Priyan laughs, "When I told him that I had made 81 films he just couldn't believe it, and asked me to repeat the number. Cameron makes one film every 3-4 years. For him to understand how we filmmakers operate in India is impossible." Cameron was under the impression that Priyadarshan only directed South Indian films. On hearing of Priyan's track-record in Hindi, Cameron desired to watch his Bollywood films. But Priyan shied away from exposing his Bollywood side to Cameron. Recounts Priyan, "When he got to know I make Hindi films too, he wanted to see some of my work in Bollywood. But I am not showing him my Hindi films. I want him to watch my Kanchivaram. Most, including me, consider it my best work. It is also my most Indian work. I want him to get a feel of the real India through Kanchivaram." Priyan will send Cameron a DVD copy of Kanchivaram. "We exchanged email IDs and phone numbers and I intend to keep in touch with him, and not only because I admire his work so much but also because he was such a humble down-to-earth man. He kept telling me to shoot as it was approaching dusk and the light would fade." Priyan wanted to attend Cameron's lecture on the 3D technique in Abu Dhabi. "But I couldn't get the time. I'm going to connect with Cameron now and we'll exchange ideas. A joint venture? Why not?" In fact, Priyan and Cameron have already discussed a collaborative endeavour. We are not supposed to know about it. But it's apparently a film that Cameron will produce and Priyadarshan will direct.
