Cop—fired for having lapel cam turned off a lot—reinstated to force

Officer Jeremy Dear

A New Mexico police officer accused of routinely not having his Taser-made lapel camera running, and who was involved in one of Albuquerque’s high-profile shooting of a teen-ager, has won reinstatement to the force.

The city’s Personnel Board voted 3-2 this week to give back officer Jeremy Dear his position. Dear’s camera was not plugged in when he shot and killed a 19-year-old girl after a foot chase last year. He was cleared of the shooting, but fired after the city’s police chief, Gorden Eden, said that the officer routinely did not have his lapel cam running during encounters with the public, as he was allegedly ordered to do in 2013 after there were several citizen complaints lodged against him.

The officer’s attorney successfully convinced the city’s Personnel Board that the police department’s policy on body worn cameras was inconsistently applied, and that there were times when cameras should not be running.

New, high-end 16MP OmniVision camera boasts 4K video recording at silky-smooth 60FPS

When it comes to mobile photography, we often talk as if the cameras of various smartphones are profoundly different across the maker spectrum. And they usually are — just not on the hardware level. See, there’s a pretty high chance that your smartphone is packing a Sony-made Exmor sensor, as the Japanese corporation is the unmatched leader in the field and the preferred partner when talking high-end devices. According to some estimates, Sony accounts for over 40% of all sales. But what about the rest? It’s a split between California-based OmniVision (~16%), Samsung (~15%), … – Source

5 completely pointless things you should definitely do in 'Fallout 4'

Freedom is the name of the game in Fallout 4. You can go anywhere, do (pretty much) anything and eat or drink whatever as you wander the blown up ruins of Boston. Most of what you do in the game facilitates progress. Complete a quest to go further in the story, kill an encampment of raiders to clear it out for your own settlers. That sort of thing.

You don’t have to follow the path laid out for you. In fact, you can just futz around and waste time. The game supports all types of players. Here are five things you can (and should) do in Fallout 4 that won’t really impact your game in any way. Not that it matters. When everyone you knew died 200 years ago and you’re lost and alone in an irradiated wilderness, it’s important to remember to have fun. …

6 best Android emulators for your computer

There are a lot of valid reasons why someone would want to run Android emulators on their PC. App developers may be trying to test their application before shipping it out. Gamers may want to use a mouse and keyboard on their games. Maybe you just want it there to have it. In any case, Android emulation on PC is possible and we’re going to take a look at the best Android emulators for PC.

AMIDuOS

[Price: $10-15]

AMIDuOS is first on our list and this is a relatively newer Android emulator. This one comes in two flavors: Lollipop and Jelly Bean. Aside from the version type, the only other difference between the two is Jelly Bean costs $10 while Lollipop costs $15 and those are one-time charges which is kind of nice. AMIDuOS runs very well. It’s a smooth emulator that does things like productivity and gaming quite well. Most users should be able to use this for pretty much whatever they need it for and the install process isn’t bad at all. Obviously, it’s not overly great for developers since it doesn’t give you device-specific configurations but on a consumer level, this one works very well.

Get it now on Google Play!

Andy

[Price: Free]

Next on our list is an entirely free emulator called Andy. We reviewed this when it first came out and while it did have some issues back then, it still managed to prove itself as a capable replacement for apps like Bluestacks. It runs pretty much the entire gamut of the Android experience including productivity apps, launchers, games, and you can even install root access if needed. It has fixed pretty much all of its early day issues but it is still a little bit more involved of an installation than something like Bluestacks. In any case, it is free and it does work very well. We have our video about it linked below if you want to know more.

Get Andy!

Bluestacks

[Price: Free / $2/month]

Bluestacks is kind of the de facto option for a lot of consumers when it comes to Android emulation on PC. It works well most of the time for most purposes. Generally, this is used by those who want to play Android games on their devices and for that, the service does well enough. You can get it for free but every – Source

Apple kills f.lux for iOS quoting a Developer Program Agreement violation

F.lux, a popular app that allows Windows and Mac users to filter the colors of the screen based on the time of day, landed on iOS yesterday.
Unfortunately for those who actually liked the app, Apple has pulled the plug on the f.lux on iOS project quoting a violation of the Developer Program Agreement.
Since the f.lux iOS app needed special APIs to work its magic, the developers avoided the Apple Store route by asking potential users to side-load the app to their iOS devices. Apple’s Xcode was updated to allow for app slide-loading a few months ago, but as it turns … – Source

Ford aims to accelerate self-driving tech by testing in a simulated city

While Volvo is putting a fleet of 100 self-driving XC90 SUVs onto the streets of Gothenburg in 2017 to demonstrate the reliability of the company’s Auto Pilot system, Ford is sticking to testing its autonomous tech on a closed circuit.

It might seem counter-intuitive, but testing an autonomous car in a closed, simulated urban environment like the University of Michigan’s Mcity actually accelerates development time. That’s because, unlike driving on open public roads and hoping to encounter distinctive obstacles and challenges, in a controlled environment, researchers can toss hundreds of virtual hurdles at the car’s self-driving systems in a short amount of time. …

Rumor: Microsoft Lumia 650 to be the last 5-inch Lumia model

According to a tweet sent out by tipster @sleaknow, the rumored Microsoft Lumia 650 (code named Saana) could be the last 5-incher to carry the Lumia name. The tweet adds that the phone features the same metal edge as the Microsoft Lumia 640. Last month, the software giant unveiled two high-end phones in the Microsoft Lumia 950 and Microsoft Lumia 950 XL. It also introduced the Microsoft Lumia 550, a low-end device.

That leaves an opening for a mid-range handset, one that might be filled with the Lumia 650. So far, no specs have been linked to the device except for the 5-inch screen that … – Source

McRefugees haunt Hong Kong McDonald's

HONG KONG — As other diners in the McDonald’s enjoyed their Big Macs past midnight early last month, no one noticed the middle-aged woman who appeared to be sleeping at her table.

The woman, wearing a grey coat and slippers, abruptly slumped over at about 1:20 a.m., according to surveillance camera footage.

It wasn’t until the next morning that a customer found the woman was cold and unresponsive. The police were called at 8:30 a.m., about 24 hours after the woman first entered the restaurant, according to a report in the South China Morning Post.

The death of the woman, identified by police as a 56-year-old surnamed Lai, has focused attention on the growing number of working poor and homeless people spending their nights in McDonald’s. …

Coast Guard searches for woman who jumped off EDM cruise ship

The U.S. Coast Guard spent hours scouring the water in the Yucatan Channel as they searched for a missing woman who had jumped from an EDM cruise ship bound for Cozumel, Mexico late Thursday, according to authorities.

The unidentified woman jumped from the deck of the Norwegian Pearl during the Mad Decent Boat Party roughly 22 nautical miles from the coast of Cuba just after 7 p.m. EST

The ship’s three rescue boats were deployed, while search and rescue teams from the Coast Guard’s 7th District in Miami were searching for the woman in the water and by air, with Cuban authorities reportedly also helping in the search. It’s unclear how many people were aboard the cruise ship, but at capacity it can hold about 2,400 people. …

Apple is shutting down Beats Music service on November 30

Just over a year after acquiring it for $3 billion, Apple has announced that it’s pulling the plug on Beats Music – the subscription streaming music service will shut on November 30.

All Beats Music subscriptions will be cancelled on the aforementioned date. The Cupertino-based company, however, is encouraging users to make a switch to Apple Music, saying that they can move their picks and preferences over to the company’s new music streaming service “right now.”

“All the pros that curated music for you are still crafting more amazing experiences,” Apple said in a support document. “Plus, on Apple Music, you’ll get even better recommendations based on music you already listen to and love, 24/7 global radio with Beats 1, exciting material from your favorite artist, and more.”

This comes less than a month after Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple Music – which was launched back in June this year – now has a total of 15 million subscribers, of which around 6.5 million are paying to use…
