Apple's iOS 10 will give you a warning when you're connected to an unsecured Wi-Fi network

Apple has been mum about it so far, but it appears that iOS 10 will provide iPhone and iPad users with a warning when their device is connected to an unsecured Wi-Fi network. Don’t expect to see a flashing screen with a siren, or a Dennis Nedry type pop-up saying “Ah ah ah. You didn’t say the magic word.” Instead, the warning will appear when you head to Settings > Wi-Fi.

Under the Wi-Fi network’s SSID, you will find the words Security Recommendation. Tap the ‘i’ button and you will be warned that the Wi-Fi network you are using is unsecured. The actual warning reads, “Open networks … – Source

Why Do Humpback Whales Protect Other Species from Killer Whales?

It sounds like something out of a children’s animated film: the whale and the seal, at first put off by their differences, team up and become best friends. It’s like The Fox and the Hound but maybe less depressing?

Layoffs and a shift towards app development at Cyanogen

Friday was the last day at the office for about 30 people at Cyanogen Inc. The company has laid off about a fifth of its workforce, mostly the open source division. US offices in Palo Alto and Seattle have been heavily affected by the cuts, while the Lisbon and India branches have been pretty much entirely shut down.

Additionally, the company will reportedly be making a shift towards app development.

How all that will affect the future of CyanogenMod is yet unclear, but with no one at Cyanogen Inc. actually working on it, it’s not looking bright. The Android ROM debuted on the…

The FCC certifies a new Huawei handset with two variants; could this be a Nexus 6P sequel?

The FCC has certified two new Huawei models, the H1622 and H710VL. Both are different variants of the same phone with the H710VL’s FCC label including the name of prepaid carrier Tracfone. Considering that the Huawei manufactured Nexus 6P carries the H1511 and H1512 model numbers, the H1622/H710VL could be a new 2016 Nexus model. HTC is reportedly producing two Nexus handsets this year, a 5-inch model code named Sailfish (S-1), and a 5.5-inch handset code named Marlin (M-1).

Trey Parker and Matt Stone explain why you should be excited for the 'South Park' video game

Trey Parker and Matt Stone are certainly no strangers to video games (See: The Stick of Truth).

But the South Park creators are particularly excited about their new game The Fractured but Whole — think about it — out this December.

The duo stopped by Comic-Con Friday evening for a wide-ranging chat about everything from how the show has changed over the years (Season 20 premieres in September) to the angriest reaction they’ve ever gotten from a celebrity (it was Sean Penn, over just the trailer to Team America).

They also shed some light on why the video game is happening now.

“We wanted it to look like you were in an episode of South Park, and the technology just wasn’t there until Xbox 360 generation,” Stone said, noting the junky games from the ’90s. “We just hated that. So when it looked like the show we got excited.” …

Trump's favorite bands really don't like Trump

The gaffe-ridden Republican convention came to a triumphant end Thursday night with a flurry of balloons, fireworks and the unmistakable riff of Free’s classic “All Right Now.”

As the party danced the night away and others celebrated the end of the longest nominee acceptance speech in the last four decades, a pinned tweet on Free singer Paul Rodgers’ Twitter page made his feelings about the use of the song abundantly clear.

'Game of Thrones' explains why you won't see Season 7 soon

SAN DIEGO — Winter has come, but it’s going to be a while before we actually see it.

At Comic-Con 2016, showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff explained that the seven episodes of the upcoming Season 7 of the show won’t even start filming until the end of the year — because it is apparently mostly set in a wintry landscape, and nature isn’t cooperating.

“We don’t finish shooting until February [2017],” Benioff explained. “We have to wait for the leaves to fall off the trees.”

Though shooting hasn’t started, the production itself is in full swing — as shown in a video screened after the panel: …

‘Star Trek Beyond’ points the 50-year-old franchise back at the stars

Let’s start with the obvious: Star Trek Beyond a pretty good movie, but it doesn’t quite make it into the top tier of Trek films like The Wrath of Khan and The Undiscovered Country. Beyond, which opens today, starts with the crew of the Enterprise in the middle of its five-year, deep space mission. This is exactly what Captain James T. Kirk (played by Chris Pine) asked for at the… Read More
