Zauba listing reveals "edge" version of Samsung Galaxy Note 6?

India’s Zauba website reveals imports and exports of note (no pun intended) heading into and out of the country. Just the other day, a listing appeared for the import of a metal mask to be used on the production line for the SM-N935G. Considering that the Samsung Galaxy Note 6 (or will it be the Galaxy Note 7?) is the SM-G930, the model number listed on Zauba certainly could be for a Galaxy Note 6 edge. Keep in mind that the model number for the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is SM-N920, the Samsung Galaxy S7 is SM-G930, and the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge is SM-G935.

6 GB RAM variant of the OnePlus 3 hits TENAA listing

We’ve been getting reports that the OnePlus 3 will come in a 6 GB variant for a while now. But when the handset passed through both the TENAA and FCC recently, all we saw in the specs was 4 GB of RAM. However, the TENAA listing has now been updated to show that the phone has 4 GB and 6 GB RAM variants.

It’s unclear how else the “bigger” model would differ. One could speculate that it will have 64 GB of internal storage, while the 4 GB RAM variant would only have 32 GB. However, the older listing, where we only saw the smaller RAM chip, still showed 64 GB of on-board storage, so combinations … – Source

YouTube app for Android will get more filter options in search results

Although you can’t argue that YouTube’s Android app is bad or lacking essential functionality, there oddly still are quite a few glaring omissions in it when compared to the service’s website. ARM unveils Mali-G71: new architecture with an eye on VR

Here’s a side of GPU to go with that new Cortex-A73 processor. The Mali-G71 makes the transition to a new architecture, Bifrost (the T880 it replaces and all the way to T6xx used Midgard, used as early as 2012 for the Nexus 10).

The G71 focuses on two things – Vulkan and VR. Vulkan is the new graphics API, which aims to provide high performance on both desktops and mobiles.

For VR, the new GPU supports the multiview API, essentially a fast, standardized way to render the scene twice – once for each eye. Since the difference in what each eye sees is small, there’s plenty of room for…

ARM’s newest CPU design wants to make throttling a thing of the past

Many companies, Apple, Samsung, and Qualcomm included, like to rely on their own custom ARM CPU architectures for their chips, but the CPUs and GPUs that ARM itself designs for other companies to use are still important. They let commodity chipmakers like MediaTek and Rockchip offer chips with good performance for less money, and they serve as a sort of pace car for the rest of the mobile industry.

Enter the new Cortex A73 CPU architecture and the Mali G71 GPU. These are new high-end designs that target 2017’s flagship phones and tablets, but they’ve also been designed with virtual reality and augmented reality in mind.

Samsung S Health update: compare steps with friends, easier heart rate monitoring and more

Health has become an important staple in Samsung‘s smartphone business model. They are one of the very few to use heart-rate sensors in their smartphones, as well as supporting Bluetooth blood pressure monitors, blood glucose monitors, scales and more. It all gets recorded through the S Health app, which continues to get better and is getting a significant update today.

Likely the coolest improvement is that S Health is getting a little more competitive (though some of you may actually not like that idea). Users can now compare their step counts with friends, as well as put this data up against their own age groups. You can even challenge friends to reach certain activity levels. To make step counts more accurate, the app can now combine steps measured by multiple S Health-compatible devices and applications.

Also improved is the ability to measure your heart rate. In essence, it is made easier with a feature you can turn on from the app. After it has been activated, one can go ahead and place a finger on the heart rate sensor, turn the device around and let the phone work its magic.

Users can now also export heart rate, blood pressure and glucose data as HTML, XLS and PDF files. In addition, it’s possible to sync data with the CareSens N Bluetooth glucose meter. And of course, there’s your usual bug fixes and performance improvements.

Dashbon Flicks – projector and Bluetooth speaker with up to 56 hours of battery life

In the world of mobile projectors, it seems every manufacturer is focusing on making their units more portable. This is great for those who really prioritize mobility, but size cut-downs do come linked with sacrifices. I have yet to see a mobile projector with good sound, for example; and lackluster battery life is another factor to consider.

Enter the Dashbon Flicks, a projector that might finally meet a hardcore road warrior’s standards. It is pretty large at 5.31 x 11.77 x 6.52 inches, so you can’t exactly throw this in a purse, but a backpack will probably work.

There’s a built in RGB LED-lit widescreen projection display in there, featuring Texas Instruments DLP technology. It has a 1280×800 resolution and 10000:1 contrast ratio. And a 100-inch projection can be achieved at only 8.4 feet.

See also: Best portable projectors5

Dashbon also managed to throw in two large, full-range speakers, as we as a subwoofer, making for what could be the best-sounding mobile projector in the market. Of course, this also means the unit can be a great standalone wireless speaker. It does feature Bluetooth 4.0 technology and can wirelessly connect to any compatible handset up to 33 feet away.

As for other ports, this speaker has anything any projector could need. You can take advantage of HDMI, microUSB, USB, a 3.5 mm audio jack and a power port. Oh, and that full-sized USB port is for charging other devices, like smartphones and tablets. It pretty much doubles as a massive portable battery.

Now, let’s talk about the most important factors: battery life and pricing. This may be one of the best mobile projectors around, but it’s also certainly not the cheapest. There are two models, one has a 140 Wh battery and costs $599, while the beefier 280 Wh unit goes for $699.

The smaller battery model offers 4 hours of projection or 28 hours of Bluetooth playback. Meanwhile, the 280 Wh iteration will keep you entertained for days with 8 hours of video or a whopping 56 hours of Bluetooth sound.

It is looking like a very tempting option, right? Are any of you signing up?

Facebook and Microsoft on Thursday announced that they are teaming up to build a subsea cable across the Atlantic Ocean.

In a blog post, Microsoft says that the goal of the cable is to “help meet the growing customer demand for high speed, reliable connections for cloud and online services” for Microsoft, Facebook and others.

Construction on the new “MAREA” cable will start in August and is expected to be completed in October 2017. The cable system will be 6,600 km (4,100 miles) in length. Microsoft and Facebook say this is “the highest-capacity subsea cable to ever cross the Atlantic.”

Google Maps to get promoted pins for local businesses

Advertising has always been a big deal, but with respect to Google, it’s literally a majority of income. According to Investopedia’s Eric Rosenburg, “The bulk of Google’s $66 billion revenue in 2014 came from its proprietary advertising service, Google AdWords. Of that revenue, 68 percent – or just over $45 billion – came from Google’s own websites.” Forbes, too, has pointed out how positively profitable advertising is to Mountain View. To this end, it should not be surprising that earlier today, Android’s maker published a post about some new changes being made to help the AdWords business model.

Of particular relevance to end-users however, is one of the changes that will appear in Google Maps. Starting now, some local businesses will have their own pins – complete with the company’s logo – that allow for easy and immediate visibility while looking for locations. Here is an example, for Walgreens:

As explained by Google:

We’re also investing in more branded, customized experiences for businesses on Google Maps — geared towards helping you increase store visits. First, we’re experimenting with a variety of ad formats on Maps that make it easier for users to find businesses as they navigate the world around them. For example, Maps users may start to see promoted pins for nearby coffee shops, gas stations or lunch spots along their driving route. Local business pages are also getting a brand new look — to encourage consumers to explore your store before they even arrive, we’re adding new features like special offers and the ability to browse product inventory.

The idea of on-going promotions offered by the retailer, as well as the ability to search and view the very items it’s selling are seemingly a great way for both the business itself to make things more visible, as well as for potential customers to save time – and potentially money – in the process. Here’s an example, for the aforementioned Walgreens location:

What do you think? Is this a major improvement to the Google Maps framework, or does the prospect of seeing more corporate advertising on your phone irritate you? Leave a comment down below and share your thoughts!

Ride in minutes, or now hours with Lyft’s new scheduled pickup

Today via their blog, Lyft announced its plans to add scheduled rides as a new option to its service. This gives Lyft a solid advantage over their main competition, Uber, which does not yet allow users to schedule rides in advance.

While on-demand rides are still the primary function of Lyft, they noted that this new development is in response to user feedback, and it is always nice to see a company taking such feedback seriously. In addition to giving users peace of mind that they will have a ride whenever they need it, this new feature also gives Lyft’s drivers a bit more of a steady, pre-scheduled way to make a little extra money.

The way it works is quite simple: when scheduling a ride, just tap the clock icon next to your pickup location and that will allow you to schedule a ride up to 24 hours in advance. This restriction is to prevent all the rides from being taken weeks in advance, which would defeat the purpose and spirit of Lyft. And you need not worry about missing your ride, because Lyft will send you a notification when your ride is en route.

Lyft’s scheduled rides will begin testing in San Francisco, and will roll out to other locations later in the summer. To Lyft users out there, is this something you are excited for? And to other on-demand ride users, is this enough to make you want to use Lyft or a competitor like Uber? Let us know in the comments.

Charter won’t compete against cable firms because it might buy them later

(credit: Cole Marshall)

When Charter purchased Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks, federal regulators forced the company to agree to some conditions designed to boost competition in the Internet service market. Charter, now the nation’s second largest cable company behind Comcast because of the merger, is required to bring broadband of at least 60Mbps to at least 1 million homes and businesses where there’s already a provider offering at least 25Mbps.

This is known as “overbuilding,” something that happens infrequently enough that many Americans have only one choice for high-speed Internet. But when Charter fulfills the overbuilding requirement imposed by the Federal Communications Commission, it’ll apparently do so without actually competing against other cable companies. Instead, Charter will enter the territory of phone companies like AT&T or Frontier, Charter CEO Tom Rutledge said.

Why is that? Because Charter might want to buy more cable companies later. And the FCC is less likely to approve a merger between two companies competing against each other.

By combining smartphone notifications with numerous fitness and sport tracking features, Garmin’s new device is also stiff competition for other trackers like the Microsoft Band. The Vivoactive is neither the most expensive nor the cheapest product in Garmin’s line, but for hardcore fitness enthusiasts, it could be the one that provides the best value for your money.
