Researchers use neural networks to turn face sketches into photos

We all have a soft spot for Prisma, the app that turns smartphone photos into stylized artwork. But the reverse process — transforming artwork into pictures — is no less fascinating. And it’s not far from becoming real, researchers in the Netherlands said.

A team of four neuroscientists at Radboud University is working on a model for inverting face sketches to synthesize… Read More

Marvel mutants TV series 'Legion' debuts in Comic-Con trailer

Legion technically exists in its own timeline, unaffiliated with the Fox-brewed X-Men movies. But it’s a show about mutants that takes its title from a Marvel mutant who’s the son of Charlies Xavier, better known as X-Men founder Professor X.

Dan Stevens stars as David Haller, a.k.a. Legion, a schizophrenic man with mutant powers. If he’s anything like his comic book counterpart, Haller’s multiple personalities each control a different facet of his abundant powers. The show also features Rachel Keller and Jean Smart, who both appeared on Fargo, as well as Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, Katie Aselton (The League) and Bill Irwin (Law & Order: SVU). …

Grammar lovers slam Trump for error-riddled tweet

You can never hide from the grammar patrol.

While Donald Trump has been criticized for his speeches having the grammar of a fifth-grader before, his tweets have taken the bar even lower — and the internet has noticed.

Trump’s tweet from July 24 about Bernie Sanders supporters, which has since been deleted, has quite a few errors that grammar and spelling lovers took offense to.

In particular, Donald’s incorrect use of “there” (it should be “their”) and incorrect spelling of “waist” (it should be “waste”) are among the offensive phrases. …

AT&T Q2 2016 earnings report: up, but not really

Shutterstock

Every few months we get to see how companies are doing, and now it’s time to take a look at AT&T’s Q2 2016 earnings report. How is the 2nd largest USA cellular carrier doing this time around? Well, the numbers show good results, but things are still not looking as bright in some areas.

These make for impressive stats, especially in Mexico, where AT&T is shaking the industry.

AT&T did add over 2.1 million subscribers, but that includes connected devices, prepaid users and their growth in Mexico (where they included 165,000 postpaid subscribers and 614,000 prepaid subscribers to reach nearly 10 million total wireless subscribers). These make for impressive stats, especially in Mexico, where AT&T is shaking the industry. Even Telcel (considered a monopoly) is changing its plans and prices after AT&T’s rapid growth south of the border.

Once you strip those 3 elements out of the equation, the numbers don’t look as amazing. AT&T is said to have lost 180,000 postpaid US subscribers during said quarter. This is still an improvement over Q2 2015’s 270,000 and Q1 2016’s 363,000 lost subscribers, but that doesn’t change the fact that numbers continue to decrease.

We are also noticing the results of AT&T’s efforts to bring more smartphones to prepaid carriers and focus less on feature phones. The company added 800,000 smartphones, while losing 600,000 basic feature phones.

But despite some discrepancies, AT&T’s plan seems to be working out.

But despite some discrepancies, AT&T’s plan seems to be working out. The carrier reported an EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $7.4 billion, while last year’s Q2 results show $7.3 billion. They also have more total subscribers this Q2 when compared to last: 77.6 vs 77.3 million.

Only time will tell how AT&T will do in the USA, in the long run, but their strategy has certainly changed and we can now put them in another category. It will be hard to compare AT&T to other carriers considering they are focusing more on prepaid and international services. They have acquired both Iusacell and Nextel in Mexico, bringing the game to a whole different level.

Week 29 in review: Brand new Xperia F8331, and a deluge of Note7 leaks

We certainly have no reason to complain about lack of stories this week. Undoubtedly it was the Samsung Galaxy Note7 that got the most exposure, with daily leaks detailing this or that about Samsung’s upcoming phablet.

Curved version, flat version, final units caught live, development units shot in shady circumstances, casemakers late to the party – you name it, it all happened over the past few days. Oh, and the iris scanner was shown in action too, plus proof came in on the Type-C port.

For all the Note7 coverage, it was another story that got tons more hits than every single…

Munich shooter may have used Facebook post to lure victims, police say

The gunman who murdered nine people at a Munich mall Friday may have attempted to lure young people to the scene of the crime with a fake Facebook post offering free food, authorities said Saturday.

Many of the victims were young people, and the 18-year-old high school student wounded 27 others during his rampage before turning the gun on himself.

Pop culture stimulates the evolution of the LA tech scene

It wasn’t so long ago that venture capital was a suburban California phenomenon. Los Angeles didn’t have much in terms of a real tech scene — and even San Francisco only had a few VCs or tech companies. Now, VC offices have sprung up in San Francisco, moving more of the investment energy up there. That great migration of companies and activity touches upon what is now… Read More

Federal regulators says car makers “cannot wait for perfect” on automation

(credit: Ford Motor Company)

On Friday, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Mark Rosekind told an audience in Detroit, Michigan that car makers “cannot wait for perfect” when it comes to developing and deploying self-driving car technology. The Wall Street Journal reported that Rosekind said automation would “save people’s lives” in a time when auto fatalities have been up 8 percent since 2014.

Rosekind’s comments come after a man using Tesla’s autopilot system fatally crashed into a left-turning truck in Florida. The incident is believed to be one of the first involving a car in autonomous mode. Tesla has said that the car’s sensors didn’t register the image of the left-turning truck in the glare of the bright Florida sun. Although Rosekind didn’t address the Tesla crash explicitly, he noted that the NHTSA’s mandate is to reduce fatalities. Taking human error out of the process of driving could theoretically reduce fatal crashes.

Despite Tesla’s most recent crash, regulators seem enthusiastic about getting more autonomous vehicles on the road in the near future. Earlier this week, Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx told an audience in San Francisco that “autonomous doesn’t mean perfect,” but that “we need industry to take the safety aspects of this very seriously.”
