British 'Vogue's' next issue will be a 'model-free zone'


LONDON — The next issue of British Vogue will hit newsstands this Thursday, just as it does every month of the year. Only this time there will be one remarkable difference: its fashion pages will be a “model-free zone”.

According to editor Alexandra Shulman, no models will appear in the features included in what it’s dubbed “The real issue”, although the magazine’s advertising pages will still feature models.

The issue will explore what “real” beauty is and how successful women dress at work.


The cover star — The Girl on the Train actress Emily Blunt — was chosen because she has “made a reputation for herself portraying relatable women,” according to Shulman. …

Well-connected analyst cuts Apple Watch 2016 shipping estimates by 15 to 25%


In a note to investors, Ming-Chi Kuo, a respected analyst with deep Apple connections, has cut shipping estimates for the Apple Watch by 15 to 25 percent.
Previously, Kuo had estimated that Apple will ship between 10 to 10.5 million Apple Watch units by the end of the year, but now his estimates have been cut to 8.5 to 9 million units. These numbers include both the original Apple Watch, now called the Apple Watch Series 1, as well as the new smartwatch model, called the Apple Watch Series 2.

A new study of ancient DNA could upend our understanding of the seafaring people who travelled vast distances to make their home in the Pacific.


Vanuatu and Tonga’s first inhabitants may have come from Asia and not from neighbouring Papuan populations in New Guinea, Australia and the Solomon Islands as previously imagined, according a report published in the journal Nature.

The team analysed DNA from three skeletons found in a cemetery in Vanuatu and one sample from a Tongan cemetery — all around 3,000 years old. The results indicate the first people of Vanuatu may have come from Taiwan and perhaps the northern Philippines, moving on, a short time later to Tonga. …

On Monday, which fans nationwide celebrate as Mean Girls Day, news broke that Tina Fey’s 2004 hit comedy will be getting a stage adaptation in Washington D.C. in fall 2017.

WhatsApp will soon look more like Snapchat.


The messaging app introduced a set of new camera features Monday that allow you to add Snapchat-like doodles, emoji and text to your photos and videos.

The update is starting to roll out to the app’s Android users now and will be available to iPhone users “soon,” according to the company.

Thousands of Polish women go on strike to protest abortion ban


Women in Poland are waging a nationwide strike boycotting school and jobs to protest the introduction of a total ban on abortion.

In an event dubbed “Black Monday,” thousands of women avoided workplaces and schools, and businesses closed their doors to protest a new law that would criminalise all terminations in Poland.


Women took both paid and unpaid leave as part of the protest, and strikers staged a picket line — named the “Wall of Fury” — under the right wing Law and Justice party’s headquarters.
