Tips files copyright infringement case against makers of Yamla Pagla Deewana

Yamla Pagla DeewanaThe Deols starrer Yamla Pagla Deewana (YPD) may have emerged a Box Office success but has now found itself in the midst of a controversy. Apparently, Tips Music Industries has filed a case against the makers of YPD (namely Nitin Manmohan and Samir Karnik) for using few of their songs in the film without obtaining the required rights. The songs in question include popular hits from the Tips audio library such as 'Pardesi Pardesi' (Raja Hindustani), 'Chori Chori Jab' (Kareeb) and 'Teri Adaaon Pe' (Barsaat) and have been used for a few seconds in the film. Confirming this story, Kumar Taurani, head honcho of Tips Music Industries says, "Yes our lawyers have filed a case against the makers of YPD for using some of our songs in the film without obtaining the required rights. Before the release they did approach us to use some of our songs from the Tips library in the film. I told them to get in touch with the head of our music department and obtain the required rights legally but they didn't bother to do that." Considering that YPD released way back in January this year, why is it that Tips is taking action after almost 6 months? Says Mr.Kumar Taurani, "To be honest I wasn't aware that they did go ahead and use our songs in the film. I had not seen YPD till recently. I watched it a few days ago on TV and was shocked that they used some of our popular songs in the film. This is a clear violation of the copyright law. Hence, I got in touch with my lawyers and we have taken legal action against them." Apparently, Tips has filed a case claiming compensation to the extent of Rs.1 crore. The verdict is yet to be announced.
