Samsung Electronics has reported a solid 17% operating profit rate for Q4 2016, which could mean that the Seoul-based manufacturer has managed to narrow the gap with its main rival Apple to an-all time low.

According to BusinessKorea, on January 8, South Korean industry sources reported that sales and operating profits of Samsung Electronics respectively stood at $44.3 billion and $9.2 billion in the last quarter of 2016, registering a operating margins rate of 17.36%. When you consider her position on Donald Trump and her recent efforts to spread awareness of the refugee crisis, it’s really no surprise that Headey would be a fan of Meryl Streep’s Golden Globes speech.

ZTE to cut 3,000 jobs (around 5% of its total workforce)

Chinese company ZTE is slashing jobs. Reports say around 3,000 jobs will be cut, or around 5% of the firm’s total workforce. The company’s handset business will see around 600 people let go, or 10% of the total number working in the domain.

The job cuts are primarily in China, where the company has been losing its market share. “Cuts in the handset business in China will be beyond 20%” said a senior executive with knowledge on the decision.

According to a local manager at one of ZTE’s overseas branches, employees that had tried to apply for jobs at rival companies are also being fired….

An HTC Vive VR smartphone? Video hints one may be coming

This year’s CES didn’t offer too many surprises in the way of virtual reality, but a new video has some wondering if we’ll soon see a major new VR product from HTC: a smartphone.

Buried at the end of an HTC promotional video leaked on Twitter this weekend is the image of what appears to a smartphone branded as “HTC Vive.”

The HTC Vive is the company’s popular VR headset, but the only major VR news the company made last week was the unveiling of new VR sensor pucks.

However, a smartphone with some kind of native VR functionality would not only be a huge development, it would represent a smart move forward as the VR industry continues to focus on the smartphone as the engine of broad user adoption of VR versus the pricier, high-end VR headsets. …

[Deal Alert] Get a new Moto Z Play for just $399.99 ($50 off), or save an additional $60 for one in mint condition

Even though I own a Moto Z, I must admit that it isn’t exactly the most compelling flagship offering out there. Not only does it lack a headphone jack and have terrible battery life because it’s so damn thin, it’s priced at an astronomically high $699.99 (though, to be fair, it can be found for sale at a much lower price).

The Moto Z Play, on the other hand, is an entirely different story.
