Twitch’s Bob Ross marathon is the most beautiful thing the Internet has ever created

I’m a Londoner, and as such, I didn’t grow up with Bob Ross. Through the power of the Internet, I had some vague low-level awareness of him. I’d seen meme pictures of the man with the ridiculous hair and funny little tree-filled paintings, and as such I knew that he had some kind of a TV show. Beyond that, I had no appreciation of the man nor of his TV show, The Joy of Painting.

I’m sure I could have tracked down his shows on YouTube—his official channel has many episodes available—but I never had any particular interest in doing so; why would I even care? I’m not all that interested in oil painting, or at least, I didn’t think I was. My interest was piqued, however, by Twitch’s Joy of Painting marathon that kicked off the launch of Twitch’s new “Creative” streaming. I’m an avid Twitch watcher, watching many hours of professional Dota 2 tournaments and casual Dota 2 streaming. I was curious to see how the Twitch community would react to something that wasn’t normal Twitch fare.

Twitch, or at least the parts of Twitch that I watch, has its own peculiar subculture. Twitch chat is meme-filled and thrives on repetition. Twitch has its own library of emoticons that are used to spam chat. The Kappa face , denoting sarcasm, is its iconic image. The weeping BibleThump is my favorite. The whole ecosystem is chock full of repeated phrases (copy pasta) and shared jokes. It is occasionally amusing, often thoroughly inane, and frequently descends into crass sexism.

Microsoft Readies Its Cortana For iOS Beta, Promises Invites In “Weeks”

Microsoft said earlier that its Cortana personal assistant – something of a rival to Google Now and Apple’s Siri – would take on its competition by offering cross-platform support, including via iOS and Android. It then delivered on those promises in August when it rolled out a Cortana for Android beta. Now it seems the iOS release is nearing, too – as the company… Read More

Delhi is set to retain its status as the world's most polluted city

The thick cover of smog that covers Delhi during the winter months is back — only much sooner this time. The Indian capital, which was ranked as the world’s most polluted city by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2014, has seen a sharp drop in its air quality over the last few days. The culprit is the annual burning of crop residues by farmers in the neighbouring state of Punjab.

Nexus 6P fails the bend test, again

A couple of weeks ago, JerryRigEverything.com made a video where they put the new Nexus 6P through a series of tests, including scratch tests for the glass, a heat test for the display, and finally a bend test. The result of the final test was that the Nexus 6P bends like a candy bar on a warm summer day.

This didn’t go down well with some people, who questioned the video’s legitimacy, the method of testing, and the authenticity of the phone being used itself. So to put those questions to rest, they decided to make another video specifically focusing on the bend test, with a brand new device.

Spoiler alert: The phone bent just like before. The reason seems to be the use of dovetail joints that Huawei has used to attach plastic to aluminum, which doesn’t seem to be the best way to do things. The joint breaks easily, causing the display to pop out at the first sign of stress. With the display no longer providing structural support, coupled with some weak spots in the metal and no other form of support along the sides, the metal bends cleanly in half without too much effort.

Now the thing is, as with most other bend tests, this one shows that in extreme situations the phone won’t be able to handle the stress. In most situations, though, the device is unlikely to have to go through that much stress, meaning the phone should be fine in regular use. Having said that, the device is still not as rigid as many of the other Android devices tested on the same channel, which, along with the new iPhone 6s, passed their tests without any major issues, so Huawei does have some work to do before it can truly match the other brands in every…

Painful Failure for First Launch of U.S. Air Force Rocket From Hawaii

During its first trial launch tonight, the U.S. Air Force’s experimental Super Strypi did not make it to space. Instead, it seems to have suffered a ‘rapid unscheduled disassembly’ somewhere over Hawaii, which in normal-people speak means the $45 million rocket blew up.

Ohio votes against legalizing recreational and medical marijuana

Ohio voters soundly rejected a controversial initiative, known as Issue 3, that would have legalized marijuana in the state, but commercial growth and sales would be handled by an oligopoly

Meanwhile, voters in the Buckeye State approved a competing initiative, Issue 2, which sought to ban monopolies. Issue 2 wasn’t about rejecting recreational marijuana, which appears nowhere in the ballot description, but rather protecting “the initiative process from being used for personal economic benefit.”

Will the Nexus 6P bend without Gorilla Glass 4 getting compromised?

Late week, a video from JerryRigEverything allegedly showed that the Huawei built Nexus 6P has a terrible build quality. Not only did the screen scratch easily, but the phone broke in half using about the same amount of effort you might spend when dividing a Hershey bar in two. But smartphone fans quickly pointed out that by destroying the Gorilla Glass 4 protection that covered the screen, Jerry had compromised the strength of the handset, thus making it easier for him to bend.

Other videos subsequently showed that the Nexus 6P did not have an issue, as it was able to survive 90 pounds … – Source
