E3 in photos: Blimps, porn, and LEGO towns at the USA’s largest games expo

LOS ANGELES—Another E3 is officially in the books, and we at Ars are still forming opinions and parsing the real content from the hype and illusions. While we work on writing impressions and picking conference favorites, please enjoy our gallery of photos from the event’s weirdest and largest stations. Click through to see selections from all three major publishers, along with a mix of indie fare, weird costumes, and, er, sex toys as game controllers.

Don’t worry, the giant NES controller was back this year.

These galleries are missing a few photos, including shots from EA’s off-site event, as well as photos and videos we’ve already included in other E3 pieces, like our hands-on look at the new Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, coming in 2017 for Wii U and Nintendo NX.

We’ve included an additional gallery for any of you who want a better look at Microsoft’s new Xbox Design Lab, which lets fans pick and choose colors and accents for every element of an Xbox One controller. It’s one thing to see the product’s website, but getting to handle the controllers and see how the colors pop is another. Full disclosure: Ars’ Sam Machkovech placed an order after going hands-on with these suckers.

Small IT companies snatch deals from tech giants

It’s a David and Goliath tale. Smaller niche companies are walking away with deals that would have traditionally been bagged by IT majors like Cognizant, Infosys, TCS, Wipro and HCL. Greater domain expertise, mobile first solutions and integrated services with cost-effective options have worked in the small companies’ favour. – Source

Apple seeks developers for the Search Ads beta

In iOS 10, those using search in the App Store might see an ad for an app along with the search response. These Search Ads are marked advertisements for apps, and help developers find iOS users looking for apps similar to theirs. Developers are invited to opt-in to the Search Ads beta right now for free. Those who do take part will have their ads appear for those Apple Developer Program and Apple Beta Software Program members who have downloaded the iOS 10 beta. That just might result in some new subscribers for the advertised apps.

Apple's firm stance forces Unicode to remove the rifle emoji for 2016 consideration

As a member of the Unicode Consortium, the group in charge of making decisions about which emoji are added to the “official” list every year, Apple has influence in this arena. According to one source familiar with the situation, the tech titan pushed hard to have the rifle emoji removed from the 2016 list of candidates. By a unanimous vote, the Unicode Consortium agreed. There will be no rifle emoji in 2016, although a pistol already exists.

While Unicode gave no reason why it decided to remove the rifle emoji from consideration, it wouldn’t be a stretch to consider that this was done in … – Source

Jailbreak for iOS 10 already achieved, though still not ready for public release

The iOS 10 early betas are already out for developer accounts and iH8sn0w has already jailbroken the early build of iOS and also has a video to prove it. The hacker can be seen in the video with a successfully jailbroken iPhone 5 running Cydia on iOS 10 with no reported crashing “for now?”

Well, Cydia doesn’t crash on iOS 10. Hooray- no hacky fixes needed (for now?).— iH8sn0w (@iH8sn0w) June 14, 2016

Totally Trippy Video Blends Two Different Views of a Dancer

You might get a seizure if you watch Ian Eastwood dance too much in this video, but it’s so damn cool that it might even be worth it. It’s neat because he blends the view of him dancing while he’s facing us with another view of him dancing with his back turned. The two opposing views are spliced together and he’s doing the same impeccable dance in each—which basically makes you feel like you’re doing drugs, because you don’t know exactly which angle of him you’re watching.

Android apps on Chrome OS: hands-on and initial thoughts

The Play Store is officially on Chrome OS! Sort of. It’s out for one device – the ASUS Chromebook Flip – and only on the developer release channel, which means bugs. First, in response to your inevitable question “Does work?” let me lay out a simple set of preemptive answers.
