'Bourne' and 'Bad Moms' open big at the box office while 'Trek' flails

Jason Bourne is the top box office earner for the weekend, with the Matt Damon-led sequel amassing an estimated $60 million in domestic ticket sales.

That, plus Universal’s reported $50.1 million in foreign sales, puts the cumulative box office of the Damon-led Bourne movies — Jason Bourne makes it four — over $1 billion.

The series already hit the $1 billion mark after 2012’s The Bourne Legacy, a sort-of-spin-off starring Jeremy Renner as another agent from the same program that spawned Bourne. The 2016 revival brings back Damon, whose presence surely helped bolster the movie’s box office take against …

Waze will soon remind you not to forget your kid in the car

Drivers lose track of a lot of things, but it’s always hard to believe people are forgetting kids in their cars. One would think walking away from a baby you are always with would feel like walking outside with no shoes. You would instantly notice something is missing, right?

It seems this issue is more common than one would think. According to San Jose State University’s Department of Meteorology & Climate Science, kids forgotten in vehicles has been the cause of 23 infant deaths in the USA this year. It’s kind of a big deal, especially as the summer heat creeps up on us. This is why Waze wants to help a bit.

The popular navigation app is getting ready to launch a feature that would remind users not to forget their kids every time they reach their destinations. These notifications can be personalized and are now available in Waze’s beta app.

But of course, if people are forgetting their kids, nothing can assure they will be paying attention to their notifications. This is a nice addition, nonetheless. If you find you don’t need it, it’s also possible to disable the feature.

We don’t know how long this feature will stay in beta, but if it is to save some lives we certainly hope it comes to the official app sooner rather than later.

Massive genome analysis suggests life began in hot springs

Features of how DNA, RNA, and proteins are built and metabolized are common to every living thing we’ve looked at, suggesting they were inherited through common descent. While life may have arisen more than once, it appears that only one lineage has survived down to the present day.

If you could trace living lineages back far enough, you’d arrive at an organism that’s the ancestor to every living thing: the last universal common ancestor, or LUCA. This idea has naturally led to a lot of speculation about what LUCA might have looked like. In the latest effort to offer some informed opinion, scientists have performed a clever genomic analysis to identify some of the genes that were probably in LUCA. Those genes, in turn, allow us to infer something about how LUCA lived and what environments it inhabited.

Building trees

Various analyses have indicated that organisms with complex cells (eukaryotes) are a relatively recent development on Earth—assuming you’re willing to call something over two billion years old “recent.” Two other lineages, bacteria and archaea, go back much further. LUCA sits at the point where bacteria and archaea started to diverge. So if you can identify genes that have been inherited by both of these lineages, they probably were present in LUCA’s genome as well.

This new Sony Xperia flagship smartphone could be announced on September 1 at IFA 2016

Sony this week confirmed that it will host a press conference on September 1 at IFA 2016 in Berlin. While the company doesn’t say what it’s going to announce then, we think that there’s a high chance for a new flagship to be unveiled on that day. And we may have already seen photos of this next generation flagship.

Currently known as Xperia F8331 (this is just a model number, of course), the upcoming Sony smartphone seems to have a revamped design: it doesn’t quite resemble the current Xperia X phones, and neither the latest Xperia Z models. According to rumors, the device’s front and rear … – Source

YouTube is testing an improved comment UI in the Android app: likes, dislikes, reactions, and sorting

Open your eyes wide because a miracle is about to happen. You know how YouTube has long had some comment tools on its website to change the sorting order and like/dislike comments? Well, the Android app doesn’t have any of that. What you get is just a regular list of comments with the option to add your opinion to the mix and… nothing else really.

However, that might be about to change. Some users are seeing a new comment interface on the YouTube Android app with the cool features from the website.

New evidence suggests DNC hackers penetrated deeper than previously thought

The suspected hacking of a Democratic National Committee consultant’s personal Yahoo Mail account provides new evidence that state-sponsored attackers penetrated deeper than previously thought into the private communications of the political machine attempting to defeat Republican nominee Donald Trump.

According to an article published Monday by Yahoo News, the suspicion was raised shortly after DNC consultant Alexandra Chalupa started preparing opposition research on Trump Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort. Upon logging in to her Yahoo Mail account, she received a pop-up notification warning that members of Yahoo’s security team “strongly suspect that your account has been the target of state-sponsored actors.” After Chalupa started digging into Manafort’s political and business dealings in Ukraine and Russia, the warnings had become a “daily occurrence,” Yahoo News reported, citing a May 3 e-mail sent to a DNC communications director.

(credit: Yahoo News)

It was one of more than 19,000 private DNC messages posted to WikiLeaks on Friday. The massive e-mail dump came five weeks after DNC officials said hackers with backing from the Russian government had breached its network and made off with opposition research into Trump and almost a year’s worth of private e-mail. The airing on WikiLeaks, which included messages in which DNC officials derided Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders, has already led to the resignation of Chair Debra Wasserman Schultz. Now, the revelations about Chalupa’s Yahoo account suggest the hack may have gone deeper than previously reported.

The value of video game maker Nintendo, which had risen $17.6 billion since the release of Pokemon Go, gave back $6.7 billion in valuation on Monday. How to fix a phone that won’t charge

It’s a problem many of us have experienced at some point – at the end of a long day your phone is on the brink of dying. You get home, plug it in and… nothing happens. That can be frustrating enough, but trying to diagnose the issue can be even more so.

There are a few problems that could be occurring – your device could be refusing to charge altogether, or it could simply be charging really slowly; sometimes so slowly that it’s actually using power faster than it’s gaining it. If you’re experiencing any of these problems, we’ve come up with a few ways to diagnose your battery woes and to help you fix the problem.

Ampere is a really great tool for checking if your phone is charging and how much it’s charging. It essentially identifies how much current is being drawn in from your device when it charges. Because of this, not only is the app great for seeing if your phone is charging at all, but also for seeing which charging method is the best.

If the number in the app shows up green, the device is charging, but if it’s an orange minus number, then your device is using power. Try using the app after you’ve completed each of the steps below and seeing what changes occur.

Get it from Google PlayTry a different power source

It’s totally possible that your phone or charger isn’t actually the problem at all, but rather the power outlet you’re trying to charge from. If you’re trying to charge from the wall, try another socket or charging straight from your computer. If you’re charging from a USB port on your computer, switch to another port or try using a wall adapter. If your device starts charging when you change power sources, you’ve found the problem and you may need to look into hiring an electrician or getting your computer fixed.

Check the charging cable

There are two components you should check before you start restarting devices and trying to fix USB sockets – the wall adapter and the charging cable. The charging cable is by far the most common charging problem, which makes sense – they endure a lot of unwrapping and rewrapping, flexing, and people trying to plug them in at weird angles. All of these things can damage the cable.

Chances are you have a few charging cables lying around, so try switching out the cable for another to see if that helps. If you don’t have another cable to test out, you may want to borrow one before moving on to a more drastic step.

Best portable battery packsBest USB Type-C cablesCheck the wall adapter

The other component to check before you start messing around with your phone is the wall adapter. This is particularly true if you’re using an adapter where the cable can be removed. It’s certainly possible that the USB port on the adapter could have broken.

AT&T Q2 2016 earnings report: up, but not really

Shutterstock

Every few months we get to see how companies are doing, and now it’s time to take a look at AT&T’s Q2 2016 earnings report. How is the 2nd largest USA cellular carrier doing this time around? Well, the numbers show good results, but things are still not looking as bright in some areas.

These make for impressive stats, especially in Mexico, where AT&T is shaking the industry.

AT&T did add over 2.1 million subscribers, but that includes connected devices, prepaid users and their growth in Mexico (where they included 165,000 postpaid subscribers and 614,000 prepaid subscribers to reach nearly 10 million total wireless subscribers). These make for impressive stats, especially in Mexico, where AT&T is shaking the industry. Even Telcel (considered a monopoly) is changing its plans and prices after AT&T’s rapid growth south of the border.

Once you strip those 3 elements out of the equation, the numbers don’t look as amazing. AT&T is said to have lost 180,000 postpaid US subscribers during said quarter. This is still an improvement over Q2 2015’s 270,000 and Q1 2016’s 363,000 lost subscribers, but that doesn’t change the fact that numbers continue to decrease.

Best AT&T Android phonesBest AT&T prepaid Android phones

We are also noticing the results of AT&T’s efforts to bring more smartphones to prepaid carriers and focus less on feature phones. The company added 800,000 smartphones, while losing 600,000 basic feature phones.

The carrier reported an EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $7.4 billion, while last year’s Q2 results show $7.3 billion. They also have more total subscribers this Q2 when compared to last: 77.6 vs 77.3 million.

Only time will tell how AT&T will do in the USA, in the long run, but their strategy has certainly changed and we can now put them in another category. It will be hard to compare AT&T to other carriers considering they are focusing more on prepaid and international services. They have acquired both Iusacell and Nextel in Mexico, bringing the game to a whole different level.
