Walter Duncan of Quick Key has some fascinating fixes for our edtech problems

Guys like Walter Duncan know what they’re talking about when it comes to edtech. Before becoming co-founder of Quick Key, Duncan spent years teaching in schools public and private and knows what teachers deal with on a daily basis. His product, which reduces the amount of time it takes for teachers to grade tests, is ingenious and is taking off. I spoke to him this week on Technotopia… Read More

Walt Disney World Won't Say The Word Zika

Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, and SeaWorld Florida have all put up signs about mosquito prevention efforts today. The Florida theme parks will also start offering free mosquito repellant to any visitors who ask for it. But curiously you won’t find the one word that matters on any of the signs or handouts: Zika.

Enhanced DMV facial recognition technology helps NY nab 100 ID thieves

Enlarge (credit: New York State Department of Motor Vehicles)

In January, the New York State DMV enhanced its facial recognition technology by doubling the number of measurement points on a driver’s photograph, a move the state’s governor says has led to the arrest of 100 suspected identity thieves and opened 900 unsolved cases. In all, since New York implemented facial recognition technology in 2010, more than 14,000 people have been hampered trying to get multiple licenses.

The newly upgraded system increases the measurement points of a driver’s license picture from 64 to 128. The DMV said this vastly improves its chances of matching new photographs with one already in a database of 16 million photos. As many as 8,000 new pictures are added each day.

“Facial recognition plays a critical role in keeping our communities safer by cracking down on individuals who break the law,” Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said in a statement. “New York is leading the nation with this technology, and the results from our use of this enhanced technology are proof positive that its use is vital in making our roads safer and holding fraudsters accountable.”

This epic Motorola DROID 3 concept has us wishing it was real

_While it appears that the Moto Z Force may have become the spiritual sequel to last year’s Motorola DROID Turbo 2, concept maker Toooajk has come through with some interesting concept illustrations for a DROID Turbo 3. Needless to add that should said device make an appearance in the future, we probably wouldn’t complain if it looked like these renders.
With a strong battery life, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 and a healthy 3 gigs of RAM, the Motorola DROID Turbo 2 stacked favorably up against the majority of 2015’s flagship smartphones. … – Source

New version of the Samsung Galaxy A5 spotted in the wild

Though a 2016 variant of the Samsung Galaxy A5 already exists, the company appears to be working on a refresh. Carrying the model number SM-A520F, the newer variant looks poised to be graced with a typical evolutionary upgrade, including a faster Exynos processor and an extra gigabyte of RAM.
Polish blog Tablety has caught wind SM-A520F on both Geekbench and GFXBench, with a couple of welcome, if largely incremental upgrades. Where the current Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) sports Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 processor, the benchmarks indicate that Samsung’s … – Source

Week 34 in review: LG V20 and Sony Xperia Rumors

IFA 2016 is closing in fast and you know how people always talk about the calm before the storm? Well, we don’t really get that as the rumor mill has been buzzing like crazy the past few days. The LG V20 is definitely one of the phones causing the fuss. LG has already confirmed it will be unveiled alongside IFA 2016, not in Berlin, but rather at its own event in San Francisco.

The Korean giant seems to be betting big on the second iteration of the dual-screen handset and yet, we still have little actual info on the device. There are a few renders to get excited about, also teasers…

Couple heats things up with wedding photoshoot on active volcano

Step up your game, couples: you’ll have a hard time pulling off a wedding shoot hotter than this one.

Photographer Jenna Lee enlisted newlyweds Lauren and Alex earlier this month to pull off one of her wildest goals: a wedding shoot on Kilauea, one of Hawaii’s active volcanoes.

Lee was first inspired to do the shoot after lava from Kilauea started flowing into the ocean, a phenomenon that hasn’t occurred in years. “When I heard the lava was flowing again… I knew I wanted to create something special,” Lee told Mashable.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 Active gets Marshmallow update

If you are still rocking a Galaxy S5 Active and are going to do so for a while at least, you have a reason to rejoice. AT&T has finally released the Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 update for the phone.

Shortly following the update for the standard AT&T S5, the update for the S5 Active is identical and comes in a solid year after Google announced it and just in time to be only one version behind the latest version of Android.

The list of updates include everything included in Android Marshmallow, along with Wi-Fi calling, video calling, and Android security updates.

Kim Kardashian admired her wax butt at the Kanye West 'Famous' art exhibit

Kanye West is really feeling like Pablo (Picasso) right now — his work is currently on display in an art gallery.

The wax figures from his controversial “Famous” video were tucked in for a secret art show at Blum And Poe in Los Angeles last night.

SEE ALSO: Kendall Jenner, who is apparently a monster, was banned from Uber

The video is up for the Video of the Year and Top Male Video VMAs on Sunday, but that probably has nothing to do with the timing of this! Taylor Swift was not nominated this year, despite having eligible videos and taking home the top prize in 2015.

Canadian carriers start selling BlackBerry DTEK50

The BlackBerry DTEK50, which has been officially available for purchase in Canada for nearly a couple of weeks now, can now also be purchased through most of the major carriers in the country.

Bell, Telus, Wind, SaskTel, Rogers, and Videotron are all now selling the Android-powered phone. The no-contract pricing seems to be pretty consistent across the carriers (with almost all of them offering the device for CAD 450), except for Videotron, which is selling the phone for CAD 430.
