This dongle lets you easily transfer your GoPro footage to your phone

SQUAW VALLEY, CA — Along with the new Hero 5 Black, Hero 5 Session and Karma drone, GoPro announced a new accessory called the Quik Key, which will make it a whole lot easier to transfer GoPro footage directly to your smartphone for sharing online.

The Quik Key is essentially a microSD card reader that fits on a keychain and plugs into either your iPhone through the Lightning port or Android devices through either Micro USB or USB-C.

How wireless emergency alerts work

If you live in or close to New York City, your cellphone likely made a strange sound at about 8 a.m. this morning. The noise accompanied a special notification about the identity of the chief suspect in this weekend’s Chelsea bombing, 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami, with advice to call 911 if he’s spotted.

This is the wireless emergency alert (WEA) system in action. Rarely used, the system takes advantage of smartphone technology to push urgent alerts out to the public quickly. Considering smartphone penetration in the U.S. is about 80% of the population — and most users carry their phones or have them nearby at all times — the WEA system is arguably more effective at pushing alerts to the public than TV-based emergency broadcast system (EBS). …

The highest rent in the U.S. belongs to venture capitalists in Silicon Valley

Aydin Senkut started his venture capital firm Felicis Ventures in San Francisco a decade ago. Five funds and more than $430 million later, Senkut is ready to open an office on Sand Hill Road, alongside such Silicon Valley institutions as Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Sequoia Capital. But he’s going to have to pay up.

Located in Facebook Inc.’s hometown of Menlo Park, California, Sand Hill Road has the most expensive office space in the U.S., even as the startup market moderates, according to data from commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield. At an average of $129.91 per square foot annually, it’s up about $6 from last year and exceeds the cost of renting high-end offices in Greenwich, Connecticut, and on New York’s Park Avenue. It is also far more than the $75.39 for comparable space in San Francisco’s south Financial District, which saw a price increase over the last year similar to its neighbor in the Valley, said Robert Sammons, a regional director at Cushman & Wakefield. …

Case makers renders the Google Pixel XL, maybe

Speculative renders of the 5″ Google Pixel came out a while back, but our only glimpse of the 5.5″ Pixel XL was a dark image that showed only the screen.

It seems that a case maker created mockups of the Pixel XL, presumably based on schematics they received. We notice the wide cutout near the camera – we wondered what that was about (no dual camera was ever mentioned) and it’s still not clear. Could that be the loudspeaker, so close to the camera?

Stranger still is the Home button. A Google phone hasn’t had a physical key on its face since 2010’s Nexus S. And it’s not a fingerprint…

iPhone 7 teardown reveals the secrets behind the A10 chip

The new Apple iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are here, and they bring double the storage, some significant improvements to the camera, water-proofing, and a brand new home button, but the big highlight of the pair is without a doubt the brain that powers the phone: the Apple A10 system chip.
While Android phones have been using big.LITTLE designs with larger, performance driven CPU cores for intense tasks and smaller, battery-savvy cores for less demanding tasks, the iPhone 7 series is the first time that Apple implements this in a mobile phone. Naturally, … – Source

Huawei nova and nova plus: Mid-range phones that don't feel like a compromise

The IFA electronics trade show in Berlin didn’t see too many flagship smartphone launches this year. Some companies, such as LG, opted for separate events weeks before or after the show, and most of the new phones we’ve seen, like Huawei’s nova and nova plus, were mid-rangers.

But a mid-range phone these days is an odd beast. Once, the loosely defined category mostly meant a phone that’s slightly weaker than top-of-the-line devices in nearly every department. Recently, however, these devices have been catching up with flagships in terms of features, while keeping prices down, with Chinese companies such as Xiaomi launching powerful …

Android 6.0 Marshmallow finally arrives on Xperia C5 Ultra

They say that good things come to those who wait, and that’s the case with the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra.

The Xperia C5 Ultra is finally receiving the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, close to a year after Sony announced that Marshmallow is headed to the handset. Better late than never, then!

The C5 Ultra will add to Marshmallow’s market share among the different Android versions, which was 18.7% as of September 5, 2016.

First launched in 2015 with Android 5.0 Lollipop in tow, the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra picked up its Android 5.1 update back in January. Now that close to eight months have passed, it’s nice to see the Xperia C5 Ultra pick up some Marshmallow goodness.

Note that the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra doesn’t come in a single model: the single-SIM E5553 and E5506 variants will receive Android 6.0 Marshmallow with the build number 29.2.A.0.122, while those who are rocking to the dual-SIM E5533 and E5563 models will have their dose of Marshmallow with the build number 29.2.B.0.122.

You will be able to download the Android 6.0 Marshmallow firmware files for the Xperia C5 Ultra from Xperia Blog (registration required).

Even if it’s not available yet, you have already waited a good eight months since the last update, so what’s a little more?

iPhone 7 survives being thrown out of a helicopter in high-altitude drop test

Can you handle another iPhone drop test. We’re thinking yes, unless seeing Apple things get hurt makes your stomach churn – in which case, this video of an iPhone 7 casually being thrown out of a helicopter definitely isn’t for you.

Still, you might be surprised at the outcome. While the display shattered upon impact, the iPhone 7 remained intact and fully functional. It even continued recording video, making for some cool (and dizzying) footage from the fall. Apple’s flagship smartphone is as flight-proof as it gets. Then again, the handset did fall on a grassy … – Source

Many of you are apparently interested in the Xiaomi Mi 5s. This is an enhanced version of the Xiaomi Mi 5 flagship model and features some rather high-end specs. Thanks for making us cry at the Emmys, 'Transparent'

Actors are known for crying at the Emmys, but rare is the speech that actually makes the audience cry.

At tonight’s Emmys, Transparent director Jill Soloway became a much needed exception to the rule. Soloway, who won Best Director for a Comedy, delivered an acceptance speech that was both poignant and memorable, and included a powerful call to “topple the patriarchy.”

Google Allo rumored to be launching this week

Google announced their brand new Allo messaging service at IO, this year. We didn’t know exactly when it would launch, but the Search Giant did mention it was coming “later this summer”. Well, summer is about to end and we haven’t heard a thing about Google Allo… until today.

Evan Blass was a very popular personality online, mostly known for his leaks track record. Now he has retired from that ninja life, but still pops up from time to time to give us some murmurs. Today he is taking it to Twitter to let us know Google Allo is launching this week.

Hello, Allo (launches this week).

— Evan Blass (@evleaks) September 18, 2016

Out of the loop? Google Allo is a messaging service that promises self-expression, Google Assistant features and security/privacy. Some people compare it to WhatsApp, as it pulls users from your contact list, but it has its own set of features. These include a plethora of emojis and stickers, as well as smart replies, a virtual assistant, an incognito mode and more.

It is looking to be a good service, so let’s keep our eyes open for more details. Just keep in mind this is a rumored launch, so don’t hold your breath on it. It does seem very likely, though, considering the summer is ending this week and we were promised a late summer release.

Samsung Electronics raises close to $900 million by selling stakes in several firms

Samsung Electronics announced today that it has sold stakes in several companies to raise money. An anonymous Samsung spokesman says that the company raised $891 million with the sales. Yesterday, the first lawsuit related to an exploding Samsung Galaxy Note 7 was filed. And while we’re sure that the manufacturer carries insurance, it doesn’t hurt to be as liquid as possible with such a large number of lawsuits expected to be filed.

The stakes that Samsung sold include a 4.5% holding in semiconductor firm Rambus, 4.2% of data storage company Seagate Technology, and a .7% ownership of electronics … – Source
