Good news: Windows 10 VR will run on nearly any modern PC

Microsoft has announced the official minimum specifications for a PC capable of running the company’s VR platform, Windows Holographic — and they’re surprisingly low.

In short, basically every modern PC should be able to run the platform, even including laptops with Intel’s integrated graphics chip as opposed to a standalone graphics card.

The announcement comes from the company’s executive vice president Terry Myerson, who spoke at the WinHEC 2016 opening keynote in Shenzhen, China Thursday morning…

Dawn of Titans launches on Android: but does it go “beyond” console gaming?

NaturalMotion, the team behind the CSR Racing series, has just released its new title, Dawn of Titans. The free-to-play fantasy strategy game, which soft-launched in March 2015, features sweeping, real-time battles with thousands of on-screen units, all fully rendered in 3D. I recently had the chance to speak to NaturalMotion CEO Torsten Reil to take a look at the game and ask about the company’s aims for the title.

Reil said Dawn of Titans began by asking: “Wouldn’t it be cool if you could have a game where you could control thousands of troops in real time on your mobile phone with a swipe of a finger? And wouldn’t it be cool if those troops were being led into battle by these larger-than-life creatures called Titans?”

As it happens, even beginning to answer those first questions would be a big undertaking.

“It turns out that it’s actually not that trivial to have thousands of troops all in real-time on your mobile phone,” he said.

The NaturalMotion team did eventually make it work, however, and Reil told me that this breakthrough was the foundation of Dawn of Titans.

Dawn of just another fantasy strategy game?

Dawn of Titans is entering a market already crowded by fantasy-themed strategy games – think Clash of Clans, Game of War et al – but Reil believes Titans sets itself apart from competitors in several ways; one of the most obvious being its graphics.

NaturalMotion started out developing software for use in games rather than as an end-to-end games developer, and Dawn of Titans runs on an engine the company designed in-house.

Reil streamed part of the game for me on an iPhone (for “technical reasons” only – Reil assured me it runs “extremely well” on Android devices), to show off the technology used in the game. The attention paid to the graphical fidelity was immediately clear.

As he walked me through the game’s hub area, Reil appeared to take pride in pointing out what could be considered minor details to an uninitiated onlooker, such as the use of real-time lighting animations on characters who are stood in menus – and the activities occurring behind them.

“In many ways, we feel like we’re actually now – on mobile – going beyond console in terms of visual fidelity,” he said. Reil also discussed marketing materials for mobiles games which feature content that doesn’t look anything like the game you play, “We wanted to make a game that looks [just] as good as the videos,” he told me.

With this engine, Reil also said that the team had essentially managed to eliminate loading times from the game.

Given the level of detail, however, I had concerns about the kind of Android device you would need to be able to run Dawn of Titans. I suspected a high-end smartphone would be a requirement, which could stand in the way of widespread adoption, but Reil reassured that it would be supported on a “very wide range” of Android handsets.

Future smartphones may charge faster and last longer thanks to supercapacitor technology

When I was in high school, I had the best physics teacher in the universe. Patrick Gillespie was genuinely passionate about the subject and often visualized the lesson using contraptions he had built himself. One such DIY apparatus was an enormous capacitor – a plastic 55-gallon barrel layered with aluminum foil on the inside and outside. While crude, Pat’s cap could store enough charge to zap any student brave enough to touch the two plates. Ah, the memories!

So basically, that’s what a capacitor is – a device that can store and deliver electrical charge. This … – Source

Moto M is coming to India on December 13

The Moto M is a premium Moto G4 Plus with a metal back.

Lenovo has sent out invites to the media for the launch of the Moto M in the country on December 13. The phone is essentially a premium variant of the Moto G4 Plus with a metal body.

The Moto M made its debut in China last month with a 5.5-inch Full HD display, 2.2GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio P15 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 32GB storage, microSD slot, 16MP camera, 8MP front shooter, 4G with VoLTE, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, USB-C, and a 3050mAh battery. It is likely to be powered by a Snapdragon SoC in the Indian market. On the software side of things, the phone runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

No word on pricing, but it should retail for under ₹16,999. Considering the 32GB variant of the Z2 Plus sells for ₹17,999 and offers much better hardware, it makes sense for Lenovo to price the Moto M slightly lower.

Why the 'SuperMansion' Christmas special makes Keegan-Michael Key feel 'a little naughty'

SuperMansion’s Christmas special is in no way your classic holiday tale.

And that makes it all the better, Keegan Michael Key, who plays The American Ranger on the Crackle animated show, told Mashable.

“You want to be able to have a different take every now again,” Key said. “It’s the hardest part of comedy. Artistically it’s fun to have the ability to say ‘oh wow I get to help facilitate this interesting twist.’ There’s something a little naughty about going ‘let’s see if we can make it as Christmas-y and as un-Christmas-y as we can at the same time.”

Light’s multi-lens L16 camera gets wider aperture but longer delay

We’re all curious to see whether Light’s crazy 16-lens camera can live up to its own hype, but it looks like we’ll have to wait just a little bit longer for the already-delayed gadget. On the bright side, so to speak, the camera is getting a significant improvement to its many lenses’ apertures. Read More

Alto’s Odyssey will follow up on Alto’s Adventure in 2017

Alto’s Adventure quickly became one of the most acclaimed mobile games released in the past few years when it debuted in 2015. The open-ended snowboarding game combined real-world physics with a minimalist, but still beautiful, art style. Today, the team behind the game, Snowman, revealed its next project, Alto’s Odyssey.

At the moment, the team is saying little to nothing about Alto’s Odyssey. The teaser image, shown above, would seem to indicate that it takes place in a warmer climate than Alto’s Adventure, complete with hot air balloons flying overhead, fantasy-style buildings and steep mountain ranges. Other than that, we have no idea what kind of gameplay Alto’s Odyssey will have, but we would guess that, based on the title, it is related in some way to the first Alto game, if not a direct sequel. The game itself is scheduled for release sometime in 2017.

The small team at Snowman seems to be quite busy these days. In addition to Alto’s Odyssey, it is also working on another game, DISTANT, alongside an Australian-based team, Slingshot & Satchel. The game is due on PC, consoles and Apple TV and appears to be a platformer set in an underground cavern, but it shares the same kind of minimal art style as the Alto titles. No release date has been revealed for DISTANT, nor is there any indication yet it will be released for mobile devices.

Dash cam captures intense video of attempted car jacking

A quick-thinking driver in Albuquerque, New Mexico, managed to avoid a car jacking attempt, and it was all captured on his dash cam.

The unnamed driver posted the clip on YouTube and explains that he was accompanying a friend to a store at about 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday. As soon as the driver exits the parking lot, he is immediately followed by a maroon Chrysler 300. It doesn’t take long before the Chrysler cuts off the dash cam owner, blocking him in at a stop sign.

The driver quickly reverses to avoid a confrontation, and the two cars play cat and mouse as the driver calls 911.

“Who the fuck is that?” the driver can be heard saying on the video. …
