New EU cybersecurity rules neutered by future backdoors, weakened crypto

(credit: Bengt Oberger)

The European Union has drawn up a set of rules governing the security of the region’s digital infrastructure. Under the framework provisionally agreed last night by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and the Luxembourg Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers, transport, energy and other key companies will have to ensure that the digital infrastructure that they use to deliver essential services, such as traffic control or electricity grid management, is resilient enough to withstand online attacks. Similarly, major digital marketplaces like eBay or Amazon, search engines, and cloud services will be required to ensure that their infrastructure is secure, and to report major incidents. Smaller digital companies will be exempt from these requirements.

As a press release from the European Parliament explains: “MEPs put an end to current fragmentation of 28 cybersecurity systems by listing sectors—energy, transport, banking, financial market, health and water supply—in which critical service companies will have to ensure that they are robust enough to resist cyber-attacks. These companies must also be ready to report serious security breaches to public authorities.”

Member states will be required to identify “operators of essential services” from these key sectors, using various criteria such as whether the service is critical for society and the economy, whether it depends on network and information systems, and whether an incident could have significant disruptive effects on its provision, or public safety.

[Deal Alert] ASUS ZenPad S 8 Tablet Is Down $30 On Amazon To $169 For The 2GB/32GB Version, $269 For The 4GB/64GB One

ASUS’ ZenPad S 8 is one of the more interesting Android tablets on the market right now. That isn’t a lot to say given how tablet releases seem to have stalled and become a second-thought for most manufacturers, but it doesn’t detract from the S 8’s nice specs. The tablet, which was released back in July exclusively on Best Buy, has an 8″ IPS 2048×1536 display at a 4:3 aspect ratio, a 64-bit Intel Atom Z3530 processor, with a MicroSD slot, USB Type-C connector, Android 5.0, and it usually retails for a very acceptable $199 or $299 depending on the storage and camera configuration.

Order postponements and processor shortage mean Surface Book, Surface Pro 4 demand shifts to Q1 2016

Shortages of the Intel Skylake chip, combined with orders that had to be moved to the first quarter, will result in smaller than expected Q4 shipments of the Surface Pro 4 and the Surface Book. This is the word from sources inside the upstream supply chain. Microsoft is using Pegatron to assemble the two devices, and yields are said to be improving, which should make Microsoft hopeful about the beginning of the year.

The sources say that shipments of the hybrid tablet/notebook Surface Book should exceed 100,000 units for Q1. At the same time, 200,000 Surface Pro 4 units could be delivered … – Source

Twitter now shows bigger photos on its website

People like looking at photos. And specifically, people seem to like staring at photos posted onto Twitter. So the company behind the 140-character service has decided to make the experience of using its website for the purpose of checking out pictures a lot more enticing than it was before.

And this has happened through a simple (if well overdue) change: the photos are now bigger. That’s it. The size of the images in your stream has been enhanced, which means you’ll probably resort to clicking a picture in order to see a bigger version of it a lot less in the future.

The same treatment has thankfully been applied to multi-photo displays, as evidenced by the screenshot below.

The new multi-photo viewer emphasizes each image more than before, while also actually having grown bigger in size. Twitter says these changes will make your timeline “more…

Tiny baby forges adorable cross-species alliance with friendly corgi

Babies have a busy life. Many struggle with packed schedules of taking naps, watching TV, spitting up, and pushing things — including themselves— over. But babies also have important jobs as ambassadors of cuteness, so they frequently find a way to carve out some quality time for cross-species friendships

The results are dependably adorable. Instagram user @ayako_0426 posts photos of a two-year-old Pembroke Welsh corgi and her friend, a smiley little baby. The two, it’s clear, are simply love with one another. And they do all the things best friends do: spoon each other, nap next to each other, and sometimes even smooch. …
