Boris Johnson got this less than warm welcome from a fellow cyclist

LONDON — Not a day goes by when BoJo, Mayor of London, isn’t a source of some entertainment. He’s rugby tackled a small school boy, failed at tug of war, been dragged into the PigGate frenzy and been pelted with colourful balls

7 tech demos that showcase some of the best 3D graphics Android can pull off

Not that long ago, gaming used to be for nerds and 3D graphics was an art form only to be appreciated by the ones invested in big, mean, expensive PC rigs. That’s no longer the case, though. Gaming has become a casual hobby for the masses, and awesome 3D worlds are being rendered on our mobile devices in real time. What a time to be alive, huh?

While today’s 3D games can make short work of even the most muscular graphics units out there, there’s a category of content that was designed for this from the very beginning. It’s called a “tech demo” and it’s meant to showcase the most amazing … – Source

Gartner: Windows Phone's market share in Q3 was just 1.7%

Market research firm Gartner has released its latest report on quarterly smartphone market share, revealing a major drop in Windows Phone’s share – from 3% in Q3 2014 to 1.7% in Q3 this year.

In terms of number of units, the Redmond, Washington-based company shipped 5.87 million units in the third quarter this year, down from 9.033 million units it shipped in Q3 last year.

It’s worth mentioning that Microsoft – in its earnings report for Q3 2015 – revealed that it shipped 5.8 million Lumia phones in the quarter, effectively suggesting that only 70,000 Windows Phone units were shipped by other OEMs in that period.

“Despite the announcement of Windows 10, we expect Windows smartphone market share will continue to be a small portion of the overall smartphone OS market as consumers remain attracted by competing ecosystems,” said Roberta Cozza, research director at Gartner. “Microsoft smartphones will mainly focus on driving value for enterprise users.”

Apple Pay has finally made it to Australia, but it’s not yet the silver bullet that will allow you to leave your wallet at home.

The contactless payment system, which lets you make quick, secure purchases with an iPhone or Apple Watch, launched in Australia Thursday just over a year after it became available in the U.S.

It arrives without the help of Australia’s big four banks — ANZ, Commonwealth Bank, National Australia Bank and Westpac — that are not onboard. So far, only Australian American Express customers with a dedicated AMEX card, meaning one not issued by a bank, can make use of Apple Pay. In the U.S., …

ISIS says it has killed Norwegian, Chinese captives

The Islamic State group said Wednesday that it has killed Norwegian and Chinese captives after earlier demanding ransoms for the two men.

The extremist group published two images of the men in the second-to-last page of its English-language magazine, “Dabiq,” saying they had been “executed after being abandoned by kafir nations and organizations.” ”Kafir” is the Arabic word for infidel. In the images, the men both appeared to have been shot to death.

The Norwegian man had been identified as Ole Johan Grimsgaard-Ofstad, 48, a graduate student in political philosophy from Porsgrunn, south of Oslo. The Chinese man had been identified as Fan Jinghui, 50, a self-described “wanderer” from Beijing who once taught middle school. …

Chicago issued $2.4 million in bogus traffic tickets from speed cameras

The Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday as part of an exhaustive investigation that as many as 110,000 “questionable” speeding tickets have been issued in the past two years in Chicago as part of a speed-camera program designed to keep kids safe near parks and schools.

…City Hall has systematically ticketed drivers near schools without the legally required evidence of a schoolchild in sight. A Tribune random-sample analysis puts the number of those questionable tickets at about 110,000.

And while it was pitched by the mayor as a way to protect youngsters walking near parks and schools, the most prolific cameras in the 2-year-old “Children’s Safety Zone” initiative can be found along major roadways, where crash data show child pedestrians are least likely to be struck by speeders.

The lengthy report is worth a read.

Among other things, the report found that Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s speed camera program issued 22,000 tickets for speeding near parks and another 11,000 tickets near parks that were closed for the night. What’s more, another 28,000 citations “were issued at cameras plagued by problems with warning signs that did not meet the minimum legal requirements.” And at least 62,000 tickets were given during the summer “when school activity is so limited that drivers are left to guess whether school is in session or not.”

Apple's iPad Pro is selling well, despite supply shortages

It hardly comes as a surprise that Apple’s “next big thing” is selling well, the only question being exactly how many iPad Pro’s Apple is actually moving. Cupertino is usually hesitant in revealing numbers, but a leaked research note offers a glimpse into the huge 12.9 inch tablet’s market success.

KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, cited in the note in question, claims that between 2.4 and 2.6 million units will be shipped in its first quarter of sales. He also projects a decline of about 10%t into next year, with about 2.1 to 2.6 million units. If Apple manages to meet these projections, the iPad will officially have the smallest sales drop out of any Cupertino product.

As usual, however, just like most Apple devices, the iPad Pro is making life difficult for part suppliers and straining production capacities. Currently, the Apple Pencil seems to be taking the biggest hit, with the very limited launch-time supplies quickly depleted and preorder times set for four to five weeks. In the report, Kuo confirmed that the complicated device is, indeed, proving a bit difficult to assemble, but also expresses certainty that production will pick up once suppliers get accustomed to the new form factor.

But apart from accessories, some of the core components that go into making the iPad Pro also face production shortages, like the high resolution display. It currently comes courtesy of Sharp alone, but Samsung is expected to step in soon to keep production going. The report reveals that many other parts are in the same boat with a sole vendor struggling to keep up with demand. All A9X chips come from TSMC, all the backlights from Radiant, display timing controllers from Parade and touch screen modules are handled by GIS and…
