Kentucky Derby favorite Nyquist just made a perfect Run for the Roses


Nyquist, the unbeaten favorite at the Kentucky Derby, broke early, backed off for a beat and then charged outside — a perfectly timed and executed race — to win the Run for the Roses on Saturday in Louisville.


The three-year old champion thoroughbred from Kentucky, named for Swedish Detroit Wed Wings star Gustav Nyquist, started clean and showed early speed


is owned by John Paul Reddam, a Canadian businessman and former philosophy professor.

Nyquist was ridden by Mexican jockey Mario Gutierrez, who won the 2012 Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes aboard I’ll Have Another, but then was forced by tendonitis to drop out of the Belmont Stakes. …
