Can Delhi Learn From Beijing On How To Deal With Air Pollution?

High on the list of Delhi’s many problems is one of air pollution. There have been ample stories in the media about how this city has the dirtiest air in the world (including a story that claimed that US President Barack Obama could lose six hours of his life after spending three days breathing in Delhi’s dirty air) and some embassies have issued travel warnings for the city as well. That honor was held by Beijing not too long ago. Now that city is trying to do something about it and has hired IBM to help.

IBM is in the first year of a 10-year initiative that will look at three critical areas in China–air quality management, renewable energy forecasting and energy optimization for industry.

The company is starting out with the first–how to tackle the poor air quality–and is working with the Beijing Municipal Government to find ways to do that.

In China, where cities have been the engines of much of the country’s economic growth over the past decade, the government has launched the “Airborne Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan.” - Source
